Dear Dr. Bruce,


This class has helped me become a successful writer in the professional field. Through the
mastering of the six student learning outcomes (SLOs), my writing style has significantly
changed to become more concise and informative. To show my proficiency in the SLOs, I have
compiled a portfolio containing my revised resume, a peer review, and an excerpt from my group
charter.
I chose my resume to be included in my portfolio because it demonstrates multiple SLOs. The
resume covers rhetorical focus (SLO 1) that formally addresses Dr. Bruce about the reasons why
being a research manager was the perfect role for me to be. I also persuaded (SLO 3) Dr. Bruce
to allow me to become a research manager by providing research experiences. I, not only
persuaded using evidence of laboratory research under Dr. Amanda Evans, but also demonstrated
that I could communicate concisely (SLO 5) by showing my presented works at various
scientific meetings. Furthermore, I organized my resume to have headings, lists, and have a
balance of white space so that any readers would be able to find information they desire (SLO 4).
I chose a peer review of Team Screw-Its charter as my second work for my portfolio. This
assignment was completed with my group members which is an excellent example of
collaboration (SLO 6). It also displays rhetorical focus (SLO 1) where the peer review is
addressing informally to Team Screw It about critiques and suggestions on any changes they may
need to make for their charter. The language in this work is incredibly concise (SLO 5) because
of the usage of incomplete sentences and yes and no answers.
Lastly, I included an excerpt from my group charter for my portfolio. Specifically, the excerpt
chosen was Conflict Management because it shows the usage of ethical citation (SLO 2). By
citing Killman and Markel on conflict management, our team was able to come to conclusions on
how we were to settle any disputes and arguments. Additionally, the citation helped our group
form a structural procedure in dissolving any conflict within the group. The excerpt also
demonstrates organization and collaboration (SLO 4 and 6). It demonstrates organization with
the usage of a numbered list and indentation. It then demonstrates collaboration because the
charter itself was compiled as a group.
This class, along with the three selected works, helped me become a more proficient and concise
professional writer. With the mastered SLOs, I was able to write this cover letter to portray

some of the SLOs. This cover letter contained rhetorical focus (SLO 1) which formally
addressed Dr. Bruce, and persuasion (SLO 3) to convince Dr. Bruce that I have mastered the
SLOs with evidence of my selected works. It also contained organization (SLO 4) where the
structure of the cover letter was taken into consideration by formatting related material into
respective paragraphs, and language (SLO 5) which features full and concise sentences that
express meaning and show the usage of vigorous verbs. I hope that my writing will continue to
improve in the future and that I am able to apply what I have learned to other aspects of my life
and not just to the professional environment.
