A1.

How have you maintained and extended a sound theoretical

approach to the application of technology in engineering practice?
I have developed my skills and expertise in piping engineering (both onshore and
offshore) and now i am a recognized piping design engineer in my organization.
Knowledge and skills acquired during my under graduation, particularly in Fluid
Mechanics and Strength of Materials has helped me to sustain in piping field. I
have continuously strived to improve on my skills by self-learning and by
attending various trainings. This has helped me to get familiarized with various
International Codes and Standards.
Trainings in piping design mainly focussed on the design guidelines to be
followed for various types of piping systems.
A2. How have you used a sound evidence-based approach to problem
solving, and contributed to continuous improvement?
Piping or pipelines are like arteries in a plant. They guide the fluids at defined
temperature and pressure from one equipment to another. Thickness of the pipe
and pressure drop in the pipelines are of prime importance in piping design. This
involved lot of manual and repetitive work.
BS standards was used for GRREC-Energos project. Spreadsheets for thickness
calculations were available for American standards. To overcome this, I
developed a spreadsheet for thickness calculations which was checked and
approved by my superiors.
I have been able to use excel with advanced features which has considerably
helped me in my day to day activities.
B1. How have you identified, reviewed and selected techniques,
procedures and methods to undertake engineering tasks?
I have been trained to execute the projects using 2D model like AutoCAD and 3D
model like PDMS (acronym for Plant Design Management Systems).
GRREC Energos project was modelled in PDMS for which following workflow was
adopted;
Creating of Project: Project folders were created in the server and project specific
machines. This is a part of administrative work.
Creation of Catalogues and Specifications: This is a part of administrative work
Modelling: Modelling was done by designers. I reviewed the models with respect
to routing and clashing.
Reviewing: Models created in PDMS were imported to Naviswork format which
was used for reviewing. These Naviswork formats were sent to the client on
weekly basis.
B2. How have you contributed to the design and development of
engineering solutions?
With experience I have developed capability of producing project specific piping
specifications.

In the Conceptual Study and Design of CW project, I was the owner of all the
piping drawings and documents along with some of the common documents. I
prepared the following documents;
Design Basis
Tie in Study Report including Tie in Schedule
Integration / Changeover Methodology
Early Tie in Package and Methodology
Piping Material Specification
Valve Selection Study
Tie In Isometrics (Only Early Tie In)
Cost Estimate for piping
Preliminary MTO for cost estimate
The approach I adopted in preparing the common document especially
Integration/Changeover Methodology was lauded by the client project manager
as the same was supposed to be prepared by chemical engineers in the process
department.
B3. How have you implemented design solutions, and contributed to
their evaluation?
I worked with the designers on the task described under B2 above to develop an
optimum piping layout. Optimization was possible by conducting regular site
visits, brainstorming sessions with the project team and Clients project team.
Outputs from these sessions were incorporated in the piping layout. Piping
Layout was done in AutoCAD.
C1. How have you planned for effective project implementation?
I have prepared many proposals, estimation of tasks and agree the same with
the project manager, in Atkins as well as in my previous companies.
For the task described under B2 above, I understood the technical definition of
the bid and scope of work as agreed with the client. With the scope of work in
place, project plan was developed and I checked whether the plan has taken
sufficient margins of the risks identified.
I also checked the project schedule that was developed as a part of the project
plan.
Execution of the project was carried out as per the project management plan and
I ensured that variance between planned and actual are kept to a minimum.
C2. How have you managed the planning, budgeting and organisation of
tasks, people and resources?
I implemented the project plan developed during the planning stage for the task
described under B2 above. I ensured that project deliverables were issued

complying with the accepted guidelines, international codes & standards and
safety requirements with minimum cost over runs.
I also worked with the project manager to manage the situations of cost over
runs by deferring few tasks to another project level so that the over runs are kept
to a minimum. I was involved in training the new project staff and I effectively
delegated the required work to engineers and designers.
C3. How have you managed teams and developed staff to meet
changing technical and managerial needs?
For the task described under B2 above, I led a team of 1 engineer and 3 to 5
technicians who were responsible for the producing the optimum piping layout.
I was responsible to provide feedbacks to the team, develop the team to the
required skillset and motivate them to help achieve the objectives of the project.
Project team met regularly with the client (either face to face meetings or
polycom meetings) at the beginning of every week to assess the situation. Once
the meeting was over, I used to meet my team and brief them about the
outcome. I also met my team every Thursday to take note of the task completed
and task to be completed for the coming week.
This has helped to nurture my managing and communication skills to a great
extent.
C4. How have you managed continuous quality improvement?
I ensured that our team follows the quality standards outlined in the project
quality plan.
I also ensured that version control is maintained. This involved recording
changes by maintaining check sheets for every document/drawing. This helped
traceability of the latest document/drawing to the entire project team. Procedure
of Inter-departmental check were put in place, documents/drawings are signed
off by all the team members involved in the task which includes the Originator,
Checker, Reviewer and Authoriser. I continuously monitored the status of the
project and ensured that all the stakeholders are informed about the status,
challenges if any so that the objectives are met.
D1. How have you communicated in English with others at all levels?
English is considered as official written language for communicating (both in
present and previous companies). I have learnt English from my elementary
schooling.
I have prepared documents on piping specifications and other general
documents in English. For the task described under B2 above, I contributed to
the documents listed.
I have also reviewed and checked the specifications prepared by other engineers.
I regularly interact with the project managers of both Atkins and the Client,
updating the project status and interacting closely for any technical issues.
D2. How have you presented and discussed proposals?

Task described under B2 above consisted of two parts, Conceptual Study and
Conceptual Design.
When we finished the conceptual study, I presented (in the form of power point
presentation) the entire option study which included the option that we are
recommending. The audience present was the top management of Atkins and
the Client.
During the conceptual design, I did a lot of presentation to show the client that
we are in line with the project objectives.
D3. How have you demonstrated personal and social skills?
My company appraisal process involves seeking feedback every mid-year and
the development is monitored every quarter. With this appraisal I have learned
about my strengths and weaknesses and has helped me to improve on my
weaknesses.
During my tenure at Saankhya Techneering, owing to the market demand of 3D
modelling, I took this opportunity to train 20 of my colleagues in PDMS modelling
and 2 in PDMS administration and modelling.

E1. How have you complied with relevant codes of conduct?

I am familiar with the code of conduct of my organization. I take full responsibility
and ownership of the work I do and abide by the principles set forth at my
workplace.
I ensure that the work I do is self-checked and free of errors to maintain high
quality.
E2. How have you managed and applied safe systems of work?
I hold safety as the topmost priority at my workplace and I respect my
companys policy for safe working. I have completed the mandatory courses on
health, safety and environment in my company.
For Example;
I discourage team members from working late in the night.
If I see any cables sticking around which might pose trip hazard, I flag up and see
to it that it is rectified and safe.
E3. How have you undertaken engineering activities in a way that
contributes to sustainable development?
I have participated in the campaigns through which social and environmental
activities are conducted in my company. I participated in an activity where used
clothes were distributed to needy people.
E4. How have you carried out continuing professional development
(CPD) necessary to maintain and enhance competence in own area of
practice?

I have identified training requirements in the development action plan register

maintained by the company. I am a member of IET and subscribe to engineering
newsletters which helps in updating my knowledge of the latest trends in the
industry.
E5. How have you exercised responsibilities in an ethical manner?
In our organization's mandatory course on code of conduct, one of the module is
about organization ethics which I have completed and honestly following the
principles.
In all the projects I am involved, I have used my knowledge and skills to produce
the deliverables of good quality. I have also trained and educated my team
members without inhibitions. I have attended internal and external project
meetings regularly and communicated to the team members appropriately.

You should give an example of: Where you have applied ethical principles as
specified in the Engineering Councils
Statement of Ethical Principles / Where you have applied/upheld ethical
principles as defined by your organisation
or company, which may be in its company or brand values

Statement of Ethical Principles

The Engineering Council, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Engineering
and a number of the leading professional engineering institutions, has created a
Statement of Ethical Principles to which it believes all professional engineers and
technicians, and related bodies should subscribe.
Professional engineers and technicians work to enhance the welfare, health and
safety of all, whilst paying due regard to the environment and the sustainability
of resources. They have made personal and professional commitments to
enhance the wellbeing of society through the exploitation of knowledge and the
management of creative teams.
This Statement of Ethical Principles sets a standard to which members of the
engineering profession should aspire in their working habits and relationships. It
guides them in meeting the UK-SPEC1 requirement to exercise responsibilities in
an ethical manner. The values on which it is based should apply in every
situation in which professional engineers and technicians exercise their
judgement.
There are four fundamental principles that should guide engineers and
technicians in achieving the high ideals of professional life. These express the
beliefs and values of the profession and are amplified below.

Accuracy and rigour

Professional engineers and technicians have a duty to ensure that they acquire
and use wisely and faithfully the knowledge that is relevant to the engineering
skills needed in their work in the service of others. They should:

Always act with care and competence

Perform services only in areas of current competence
Keep their knowledge and skills up to date and assist the development of
engineering knowledge and skills in others
Not knowingly mislead or allow others to be misled about engineering
matters
Present and review engineering evidence, theory and interpretation
honestly, accurately and without bias
Identify and evaluate and, where possible, quantify risks

Honesty and integrity

Professional engineers and technicians should adopt the highest standards of
professional conduct, openness, fairness and honesty. They should:

Be alert to the ways in which their work might affect others and duly
respect the rights and reputations of other parties
Avoid deceptive acts, take steps to prevent corrupt practices or
professional misconduct, and declare conflicts of interest
Reject bribery or improper influence
Act for each employer or client in a reliable and trustworthy manner

Respect for life, law and the public good

Professional engineers and technicians should give due weight to all relevant
law, facts and published guidance, and the wider public interest. They should:

Ensure that all work is lawful and justified

Minimise and justify any adverse effect on society or on the natural
environment for their own and succeeding generations
Take due account of the limited availability of natural and human
resources
Hold paramount the health and safety of others
Act honourably, responsibly and lawfully and uphold the reputation,
standing and dignity of the profession

Responsible leadership: listening and informing

Professional engineers and technicians should aspire to high standards of
leadership in the exploitation and management of technology. They hold a
privileged and trusted position in society, and are expected to demonstrate that
they are seeking to serve wider society and to be sensitive to public concerns.
They should:

Be aware of the issues that engineering and technology raise for society,
and listen to the aspirations and concerns of others
Actively promote public awareness and understanding of the impact and
benefits of engineering achievements

Be objective and truthful in any statement made in their professional

capacity
