MESSAGE FROM THE

SECRETARY GENERAL
Dear Supporters,

I am pleased to share with you our annual report for the year 2015. With your generous gifts of time,
money and dua, we have undertaken a program of activities in the fields of Education, Health, Islamic
Education, the Madrasah Centre of Excellence Project, Relief and the Zainabiyya Child Sponsorship
Scheme - continuing to live our motto we exist to serve. I pray to the All Mighty for abundant rewards
to be bestowed on you all.
This year we have launched two exciting new digital services. AskAnAlim.org, in collaboration with
Africa Federation, is an opportunity for all members of the community to access a scholar whenever
they need. Questions posed on the site are anonymous and the answers are available for all to see.
Id like to thank the Aalims and Aalimas that are giving up their time to answer questions and guide
us all. The second covers the important topic of Wills. ShiaWills.org, in association with The Council
of European Jamaats and Africa Federation, contains both the most up-to-date rulings from Ayatullah
al-Uzma Sayyid Ali Sistani and also the opportunity for you to fill in some simple details and generate
an example will for your use.
The year 2016 poses both challenges and opportunities. Our relief work is growing rapidly both in
terms of donations received and the number of countries that we work. We are continually assessing
our internal processes to ensure we adhere to best-practice around monitoring, evaluation and
reporting and our internal IT infrastructure to support this. We also will look to further our digital
offering and seek to develop mobile apps to expand our range of services.
We look forward to serving you in 2016.

MESSAGE FROM THE

HEAD OF EDUCATION
The goal of The World Federations Education Department is to empower communities through
education and enable them to become self-sufficient. Our hope is that this independence will create
a generation of skilled individuals who will work together to lift their families and communities out of
poverty.
There are currently over 7.1 billion people living on earth, and the world illiteracy rate is just shy of
900 million people.
The majority of children from underdeveloped countries have no hope of ever getting an education to
be able to break the cycle and escape poverty. Through the provision of education, we can collectively
conquer other challenges.

SUMMER YOUTH COURSES

69

the summer short
course in Iran

Since I have come back from Iran, I have

started seeing things in a totally different light. I
realise that there are deep lessons to be learnt
from millions of things. From the bird which
has a GPS in its brain to the state of millions
of people who live in poverty, homelessness
and hunger. But most importantly, I havent
only changed the way I see things but have
developed my understanding as well. From
the dress that I choose to wear in the morning,
to the life changing decisions I make. My
habits have changed, my prayer has changed
and my mind has changed. Essentially, my life
has immensely changed!.

Participant from London, UK)

the incredible and selfless efforts put in by

Islamic Education

Since 2004, The Islamic Education Department

in partnership with Regional Federations has
organised an annual summer course for youths
in Iran for both boys and girls. On average, 70
youths attend the course every year. The students
spend three weeks in Iran and visit Tehran, Qum
and Mashhad. Apart from their own ziyarats,
the students are given classes, discussions,
opportunity for Q&A with senior scholars, and a
host of fun and leisure activities. This helps them
to gain motivation to follow an Islamic way of life.
The course also accommodates a number of native
African students from the Bilal centres, and other
non-Khoja applicants, who are all fully sponsored.
This year, the 13th consecutive summer course
ran from July 23 to August 12, 2015. The World
Federation of KSIMC Qum Office had the honour
of hosting 69 participants and 13 mentors attending
from three continents and from a variety of academic,
familial, geographic and linguistic backgrounds.
The 2015 course was the largest to date and we
have had phenomenal feedback on social media by
parents, students and the general public.

MADINAH & BAB

MENTORING SCHEME

Every year for the past three years, we recruit and

train a number of mentors who were former students
of the Madinah and Bab course, to accompany the
students throughout their experience.
The mentors are there to advise, encourage and
help students reach their potential. They are
effective in their roles as they are seen as friends
with whom the students can readily build a bond.
This scheme is also an important step in the selfdevelopment of the mentors, and is designed to
encourage them to take up roles of leadership
and responsibility once they return to their home
communities.
Mentors come from various jamaats including
Stanmore, Essex, Trollhatten, Toronto, Hyderi (South
London), Wessex, Birmingham, Dar es Salaam,
and Leicester. They attend a three-day training
course to prepare them for their roles. In 2015 we
had 13 mentors who successfully completed 3 days
of intensive training which includes:

This three-week summer course is a chance to

taste but a morsel of these amazing blessings
of knowledge, spirituality and peace. And as a
mentor, not only is this an experience that one
can journey, but also a chance to serve and
observe others making this amazing journey
of connection to the Lord Almighty and the
Masumeen. In the end, I must say, that home
is where the heart is, and there is no place
else where I feel the peace of home, in my
heart but here, the Holy City of Qum.

Africa Federation and NASIMCO both showed an interest in running these courses. Nasimco was not sure
about the participation and how it could facilitate this in regards to logistics. A needs assessment should be
reassessed at a later date. AFED AFTAB is planning to hold the courses during the months of Muharram
and Safar.

MULLA ASGHAR PROJECT

Following the sad demise of Marhum Mulla Asghar, The World Federation secured his intellectual legacy by
digitising his lectures and discussions. This process commenced in 2005 and was completed in January 2014.
These lectures have proven to be very popular, especially with remote Jamaats throughout the world who
often use them in their majalises in the absence of a speaker. These lectures were also aired by Ahlulbayt TV.
We are now uploading the collection onto our YouTube channel and the CDs/DVDs are also available in The
World Federation Shop for those who wish to purchase and own copies for themselves. We aim to complete
the entire project by April 2016.

PRODUCTION COMPANY

This work is funded 50% by the Hiridjee Foundation and 50% from The World Federation. Production content
of 10 hours per week is currently being created. 2 documentaries have been released this term and with more
in the pipeline.

HEAD OF MADRASAH CENTRE

OF EXCELLENCE
The Madrasah Centre of Excellence (MCE) has four separate workstreams:
1. Curriculum Development
2. Teacher Development
3. Learning Resources
4. Assessment & Evaluation
In 2015, we worked with the regional bodies on improving each of the above areas to ensure that
madrasah students are taught in the most effective way.

CIRRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Creating a lesson requires a great deal of work to

ensure that it is of the highest quality before putting
it into use. The Madrasah Centre of Excellence
(MCE) has developed 8 modules, some of which
have over 60 lessons. This has been a long
process but one in which we have made great
strides in 2015. By the end of December, we had
either completed or were working on 243 lessons.
Out of the 8 modules, three will be completed
by the end of March 2016 and the rest will be
completed by the end of summer 2016.

ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION

20 madrasah assessors from The Council of European Jamaats were trained in January 2015 on a new
methodology which answers these five fundamental questions:
1. Is the Madrasah caring?
2. Is the Madrasah responsive to the needs of students, teachers and parents?
3. Is the Madrasah effective in meeting the needs of students, teachers and parents?
4. Is the Madrasah well led?
5. Is the Madrasah safe?
Our goal for 2016 is to train assessors across all other regions.

MESSAGE FROM THE

HEAD OF RELIEF

The International Developments Relief division is the humanitarian arm of The World Federation of
KSIMC where we aim to provide practical solutions for the different challenges faced by men, women
and children around the world who lack basic provisions in regions of deprivation, war and natural
disasters. To achieve our goal, we raise awareness and count on the generosity of donors during
occurrences of disasters, international emergencies and crises, where we work with our regional
members and partners on the ground to deliver services in the affected areas. Relief continues to
provide support for:

Disaster and Emergency Relief

Microfinance Opportunities and Sustainable Livelihoods
Water and Sanitation
Housing and Shelter
Community Development
Food and Nutrition

Our work is yielding meaningful results where individuals, organisations, community groups, youth
and children from across the world are coming together to support the many initiatiaives that are
improving the lives of and preserving the basic human dignity of so many people.
In 2015, more than 600 donors partnered with The World Federation to support humanitarian aid and
relief programs. Your incredible generosity has helped those who were helpless, fed those who were
hungry and provided assistance to those who needed it.
On behalf of everyone at The World Federation of KSIMC, thank you for your gracious support.

The Al-Qaim Sponsor Our Seniors (SOS) Program

was launched in the name of Imam-e-Zamaana

and give hope to those living in despair. The SOS
Program provides seniors living in abject poverty
with a monthly income supplement to help meet
their expenses, giving them the opportunity to age
gracefully.
Today, a senior is wondering where his/her next
meal is going to come from. Another elder is forced
to choose between food and medication because
of lack of funds. These are the kinds of everyday
problems many of our elders are facing. Often times,
these seniors have no family to turn to for help and
end up suffering in silence, alone and without hope.

Each year in the Islamic month of Zilhajj, Muslims

around the world celebrate Eid al Hajj, a religioius
holiday also know as the Festival of Sacrifice. Eid
al Hajj honors the willingness of Prophet Abraham
(as) to sacrifice his son, Ishmael (as), as an act of
submission to Gods command. At the time of the
great sacrifice, God intervened to provide Abraham
with a lamb to sacrifice instread. Qurbani (the
sacrifice of a livestock animal), has since been a
key ritual in the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah.
In keeping with the annual ritual of Qurbani, The
World Federation facilitates the slaughtering of

have displaced thousands of families since 2010.

NEW HOMES

In 2015, The World Federation built 14 new homes across 13

villages in Pakistans Punjab province. Since then, 68 people
have moved out of makeshift shelters and into these new
dwellings. Each home includes one room and a washroom.

SEWING MACHINES

In May 2015, 60 sewing machines and sewing classes were

provided to female relatives of those male breadwinners killed
in targeted killings in District Dhera Ismail Khan in Pakistan.
Prior to these killings, these families were financially cared for
by their male family members. This program assists women
in developing sewing skills to start their own homebased
businesses to generate income to provide for their families.

EMERGENCY FOOD AID

On 21 July, 2015, heavy monsoon rains resulted in extreme

flash floods across Pakistan. The downpour caused rivers to
overflow to the point where entire villages were submerged
in water leaving thousands of people homeless. The World
Federation provided 693 bags of flour (20 kg each) to flood
victims across 8 districts in Sindh and Punjab provinces.

TESTIMONIALS

We received a message on Facebook that read: I heard you

distribute food parcels in Ramadhan. I know a disabled halfblind lady who has no income. Would she qualify to receive
a parcel? After inquiring we found out that the person who
sent us the message was a 9 year old boy and the lady was
his mother. We gifted them a food basket. (BOSNIA)
We distributed 2,000 items of clothings to orphans in Iraq.
One orphan said: Its not the cost of the gift that touches us,
its the message from donors that show us that somebody
out here is thinking about us and cares for us. (IRAQ)
Fatima is doing her apprenticeship in Gaza. Prior to her work
placement, she and 16 other refugee women successfully
completed a 6 month training program in food processing.
The World Federation sponsored this program to assist the
most vulnerable. (PALESTINE)
During the food distribution, we discovered villageers who
were fasting but could not afford the basic staple food for
iftaar and sehri. Thus, they resorted to boiling leaves for their
meals. These leaves are not meant to be eaten. we provided
these families with food rations for the month of Ramadhan.

In March 2015, The World Federation responded

to a distress call from its regional member in Aden
in the Republic of Yemen to evacuate community
members immediately. The conflict in Yemen escalated
considerably and became unbearable to the point where
these individuals suffered from direct threats, injuries,
killings, bombings and had their human rights completely
violated simply because of their faith and identity.

ETHNIC PERSECUTION:
ONE MANS STORY ENDS IN TRAGEDY

Abbas Shabbir was targeted by armed insurgents in

Yemen because he was Shia. They marked his house
with the letter R denoting rafidhi (derogatory term used
to classify Shias as infidels). On 16 January 2015, when
returning from work, his car was attacked by insurgents
who managed to plant a bomb during the hit. Moments
later, his car blew up. Abbas was able to get out even
after sustaining heavy injuries. He passed away alone
in a local street in his neighbourhood and sadly no
witnesses stopped to help him.
As migrant families waited to be resettled in new countries, 3
weddings and 2 births took place at The World Federation camp

The World Federations Yemen Emergency

Appeal provided emergency assistance to
community members who were victims of
Yemens war zone. A 3-phase plan was charted
and actioned to address the short, medium
and long-term needs of these individuals and
families.

PHASE 1: YEMEN RESCUE OPERATIONS

Two rescue operations were successfully carried out in April

and May 2015 where a total of 108 families (456 men, women
and children) were evacuated and rescued by boat from
Yemen and brought to Djibouti for safety. The boats were
equipped with life jackets, food, medicine and volunteers.

PHASE 2: INTERIM STAY IN DJIBOUTI

Upon their arrival in Djibouti, the UNHCR granted these

familites prima facie refugee status. The World Federation
then carried out a detailed interview with each famly to
document their circumstances and to plan next steps.
Whilst in Djibouti the families were cared for by The World
Federation and its team of volunteers. Food, accommodation
and medical care were provided for all 456 individuals. Unable
to go back to Yemen, these individuals remained strong and
united as they awaited news of future resettlement options.

PHASE 3: LONG-TERM RESETTLEMENT

Over the last several months, The World Federation has

been working with various individuals and sovereign
governments across the world to permanently resettle the
families in safer countries. We are pleased to report that
each of the individuals under our care have been allocated a
destination country in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. 290
individuals have alreay left for their new homelands, 116
people will leave by the end of January 2016 and 50 people
are awaiting further paperwork.

PRIMARY EDUCATION

Mostafas story is a great example of how the Zainabiya Child Sponsorship Scheme (ZCSS) has been and
still is a beacon of hope for those living in abject poverty. Mostafa is a ZCSS beneficiary living with his mother,
Marium Bibi, who is a single parent. As she struggles to provide basic needs for her children, providing them
with quality education was beyond her means. Mostafa was sponsored by ZCSS which enabled him to
maximise his potential. After successfully completing his primary and secondary education, Mostafa is now
a student of higher seconday (science stream). He stood first division at during his secondary examination.
Marium Bibi is grateful to ZCSS and said: So many thanks to God that my son completed his two educational
stages, primary and secondary. Now he is a student of higer secondary science stream. I am grateful to
ZCSS.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Mohammedtaqi, a ZCSS sponsored student secured a merit seat for MBBS and this year he successfully
passed the final year of MBBS. He is currently a doctor.

ZCSS

I would like to thank ZCSS for providing me with the

sponsorship that has made my studying a success.
When I completed my secondary education my
dreams had shattered. I thought I wont make it in life.
But then with Gods grace , ZCSS came and provided
me with the sponsorship.
With the sponsorship I received, I have benefitted
in many ways. I now have my certificate in Early
Childhood Development Education which I completed
without worrying about fees payment and currently I
am starting my Diploma in the same course.
I promise you that I will not disappoint and will work
very hard so that I can have my Masters in Special
Needs education.
