Goal: My audience will get to understand and appreciate the importance of
music and how it affects us emotionally. Organization: I have chosen a topical pattern of organization because you can break music terms into topics (i.e. dynamics, tempo, rhythm, key) and tie them into the emotions they can stimulate per topic. Audience Analysis: All of the audience are involved in education and are therefore learning. I will be teaching the usefulness of understanding that music is a real expression of emotion and realizing what you feel is what you perceive. Knowing how to identify your emotions is key to focus and study. Occasion Analysis: My speech is meant to be informative with a hint of entertainment. Since most people remember things that spark their interest I want to inform in an interesting way. The classroom is a good setting for this. Music and Emotions: Find your vibe Intro: Have you ever heard a song you dislike on the radio? (Play fingertips and stop abruptly) Youd quickly switch it to something you like. (Play Santeria chorus by sublime) Or you may just want to turn off that radio and enjoy the sweet purr of your car as you ride along a road with a nice view of the mountains. I dont have a working radio. I get to enjoy the sound of silence (not the song) daily. But its not truly silent and it never will be for anyone as long as we live. Cause sound is everywhere from loud neighbors, to your heartbeat, and even from your mind. So we might as well utilize this ubiquitous presence because what we hear, see, and touch deeply influences how we feel emotionally. By using music through recognizing our dynamics (loudness), tempo (speed), and mode (key) we can find our emotional vibe to live healthier. Body: 1. Dynamics: how loud do you feel? A. (Maleguea intro) Can you hear me now? Loudness -We can hear 0-120dBl -Good for emphasis, meaning, enthusiasm, and authority -Needed for letting out energy and emotions B. Quietness. -Anechoic Chamber Quote It was one of the loudest experiences Ive ever had(Music 1500 professor Steve Sue) -Good for attention getting and focus. -Better for relaxation and healing -Is more tolerable in large amounts C. Ranging both (Crescendo-Decrescendo) -For clarity and interest -Maintaining equilibrium -Fluctuations will happen and provide fuller experience Well you can be as loud or as quiet as you want but you cant go anywhere without movement.

2. Tempo: how fast or slow (movement) will you go?
A. Fast (Presto) -Get up and go energy -Stabilizes forward movement -Like loudness can only be taken in small amounts -Is a stimulant used in workplaces B. Slow (Andante-Grave) -Relaxation -Can be used for focus and control -Time is money (Prof. Larkin) harder to use in a business/competitive setting C. Adaptation (Accelerando-Ritardando) -Take note The only constant in life is change (Friend Dallas) -Knowing how to bridge energies is important for setting changes -Compare rock climbing importance as well? -Not everyone has the same capacity for going slower or faster Now that volume and movement have been discussed we need one key factor to get into the mood of things. Or should I say mode of things? 3. Mode: Key You can change your mood with just one note A. Major (happy) -Used for a basis of understanding (the modes we learn first) -Not always the best for consoling someone sad -Can be relieving in predominantly sad (minor) songs (play end of Is There Anybody Out There? by Pink Floyd) B. Minor (sad) -Many enjoy this key cause Sad things are happy for complicated people (Dr.Who) -Can produce credibility and emotional connectivity (ethos and pathos) at the same time -Tends to be slower and reflective Note: Both keys/emotions need to be fluctuating or else youll flat-line. (Dead) Its unhealthy to be always sad as well as always happy. C. White (noise) -Included this instead of mixolydian/Phrygian/blues cause its all frequencies -Considered unimportant and irrelevant -Provides a base for comfort and can be used to help focus (like a fan)

Overall it is staggering how music can be deeply correlated to how emotions
and social conventions work. If we want to be healthier in our day-to-day lives we need to realize our physical and mental environments by how loud they are, how fast it is processed, and what mode we find ourselves in to be in the vibe we aim to be. I wonder what the radio will play next? (Finish with short wheelchair song)
