Question 1:
In John 2:11 it is stated, Jesus did this as the beginning of his
signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples
began to believe in him. In this chapter, the signs that John is
referring to are the actions of Jesus during the Wedding at Cana. When
there was no wine left to satisfy the guests, Jesus was able to perform
a miracle by creating wine out of the water. This miracle was one of the
first signs that Jesus was indeed the Son of God. Since a few of the
disciples were doubtful of the Messiah, these signs were used in
order to give them physical proof that they were following the right
man.
Question 2:
Within the Gospel of John there are several moments when Jesus
crosses the line of the cultural rules of their time. One instance occurs
in John 4, when Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a drink at the well,
The Samaritan woman said to him, How can you, a Jew, ask me, a
Samaritan woman, for a drink?:. Even the Samaritan woman knew that
Jesus should not be in contact with her and there would most likely be
consequences. Jesus helped several people that were considered
unclean which also offended the men in charge. It could also be
assumed that these works scared the men knowing that they may lose
power to Jesus, leading to his death.
