October 14, 2016, from http://borderzine.com/2011/06/childhood-obesity-in-el-paso-onthe-rise/
This article provides information regarding an obesity problem that is happening in El
Paso, Texas. Child obesity is currently on the rise throughout the United States and in El
Paso itself, it is estimated that about 17 percent of children are overweight, one of the
main reasons this is happening right now is due to the amount of screen time children
spent throughout the day, whether it is playing videogames or watching t.v. Another
attributing factor this source provides for the problem is the affordability that each family
has to buy food as they would tent to buy fast food instead of home cooking. This is a
credible source as it is coming from a research which gives specific details to the
problem. This source proved to be very relevant and helpful towards my report as it does
relate to the topic and it appears to be coming from a source that has done the appropriate
research.

throughout the United States and it even goes into small detail as to how El Paso is doing

attributing factors to this, such as easy access to high-calorie, high sugar foods and fast
foods. This article has made it very helpful to collect precise data as it links to a study
conducted by Risk Factors Collaboration members. As far as the reliability of the source
goes it is good due to it coming from a prestigious company which has clearly done their
job by collecting data and interviewing different specialists on the subject. It does relate
heavily to my community problem, therefore making it useful for my report.
Coleman, K. J., Heath, E. M., & Alcal, I. S. (2004, April). Overweight and aerobic fitness in
children in the United States/Mexico border region. Revista Panamericana De Salud
Pblica, 15(4). doi:10.1590/s1020-49892004000400007
In this journal the contributors for this paper conducted a study to determine the level of
fitness and measure the Body Mass Index of children in the United States/Mexico border
cities of El Paso, Texas and Chihuahua, Chihuahua. They kept track of the children for
one school year and then measured the Body Mass Index once again. In the end, they
could determine that in the El Paso region overweight increased significantly. These
results proved that an effort should be made to increase the level of physical fitness in the
border region. This is a very reliable source as it has been backed with specific research
done to analyze the problem. Many health specialists were involved, therefore coming
from someone with expertise in the subject. It is a very useful source for my problem as it
does provide specific data and results which is exactly what I am looking for to include in
my report in order to provide factual information.

population. Health Education Journal, 69(4), 427-438. doi:10.1177/0017896910379362
In this journal, research has been conducted to examine the level of obesity and physical

health screening, the results were analyzed and gathered to conclude that most these
people do not meet the CDC recommendations for physical activities. This information is
coming from a reliable journal as well as results gathered from professors who have an
expertise in this subject. This is something that I will be able to use in my report as it

with us. Retrieved October 14, 2016, from
http://www.pdnhf.org/health_articles/collaboration-is-vital-to-improving-health
This article provides information on the relationship that the El Paso organizations
currently have between each other. As stated by the author, communication is vital in
order to achieve the desired objective and that is exactly what organizations in El Paso
are doing. Working together in order to exchange information for mutual benefit and also
work proficiently to enhance each others capacity to achieve a common purpose. I
believe this is a reliable source as it is coming from a current member of the health
foundation in El Paso and Mata is also a certified public health nurse. This information
might be somewhat useful for my report as it is stating that health organizations are
working together to address problems in the community, however it does not specify
which ones, therefore it is inconclusive whether it may be about obesity or not.

In this source, Ornelas is pointing out a very crucial situation that was happening in 2011,
almost 85,000 people in El Paso are affected by diabetes and 25 percent of them do not
even know it. However, there is plenty of help available to these persons as the Diabetes
Association is raising awareness by making several events were people can get more
informed about the causes and treatments for diabetes. This is something that can affect
anyone if they do not take care of their health, especially their weight and diet. The
author of this article gathered her information from reliable sources and carefully looked
at the statistics given by the Diabetes Association. As this information is presented by
collected data from several people, it is reliable for my report. This is source is relevant to
my topic, as diabetes is a consequence from obesity, despite it being a little outdated and
it is coming from a reliable source.

In this journal, research has been conducted to analyze the level of physical activity
amongst adolescents as well as the risk to develop overweight problems due to the lack of
exercise. Teens from the Lower Rio Grande Valley were studied to determined their
healthy habits, and their body mass index which determines whether they fall under the
category of overweight. Teens who were physically active during school hours or
participated on an extracurricular activity were less likely to develop obesity problems
than those who remained sedentary. This information is coming from a research done by
The National Institutes of Health Center, which rely on reliable information and credible
sources. It is something that relates to my problem, therefore making it useful for my
report.
