Force and Motion
According to Aristotle (384322 B.C) an object requires a
push or pull (force) to keep it
moving. This statement was
abolished by Galileo Galilei
(1564-1642) by his several
experiments
on
moving
objects. Galileo tested his
hypothesis by experimenting
with motion of various objects
on inclined plane. He denied
Aristotles Principle of motion
when he stated that if there is
no outside force acted upon
on a moving object, it will

keep moving in a straight line
forever; no push, pull of force
of any kind is necessary.
Although Galileo introduced
the idea of inertia (without
outside force an object at rest
will remain at rest and an
object in motion will continue
to move in straight line unless
acted upon by an outside
force) he fail to explain why
objects fall and what force
acted on falling objects. It was
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
who discovered the force
acted by the Earth towards a
falling object and he called it
gravity. The discovery of
gravity
led
Newton
to
formulate the Three Laws of
Motion. Nowadays force is
expressed in Newton (N) to
give an honor to a man who
has a genius beyond in his
own time.

3. Generalization
What does the law of
inertia states?
4. Background information for
Teachers
Law of inertia states that
an object at rest will remain at
rest and an object in motion
will continue in motion in a
straight line at constant speed,
unless acted upon by outside
force.

The key word in this law

is
continues:
an
object
continues to do whatever it
happens to be doing unless a
force exerted upon it. If it is at
rest, it continues in a state of
rest. If it is moving, it continues
to move without turning or
changing its speed. In short
the law says that an object
does not accelerate of itself;
acceleration or change in
motion must be imposed from
the outside. Things at rest tend
to stay at rest and things
moving tend to continue
moving. This tendency of
things to resist changes in
motion is inertia.
Mass: the quantity of matter in
an object. It is also the
measure of the inertia or
sluggishness that an object
exhibits in response to any
effort made to start it, stop it, or
change it state of motion in any
way. Kilogram (kg.) is a unit
used to measure mass.
Weight: the force upon an
object due to gravity. Newton
(N) is the unit used to express
weight of an object.
Force= mass x acceleration
Weight= mass x g
(acceleration due to gravity)

Newtons third law of motion or the Law of Action-Reaction

In the simplest sense, force is a push or a pull. Looking closer, however, a
force is not a thing in itself but is due to an interaction between one thing and another.
Consider for example the interaction between a hammer and a stake. A hammer exerts
a force that is only half of the stake, for there must be a force to halt the hammer in
the process. What exert this force? The stake! Newton reasoned that while the
hammer exerts a force on the stake, the stake exert force on the hammer. So in
interaction between hammer and stake there is a pair of forcesone acting on the
stake and the other acting on the hammer. Such observations led Newton to his third
lawthe law of action and reaction.
