Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics V

(Integrated with Values Education)

I. Objectives:
After a 50-minute lesson, the grade 5 pupils will be able to do the following with at least
80% proficiency:
1. identify the geometric properties of polygons,
2. differentiate regular and irregular polygons,
3. draw an example composing of regular and irregular polygons, and
4. appreciate the state of being equal.
Fairness
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Properties of Polygons
Mathematical Concepts:
Polygons are closed plane figures with three or more sides and angles.
Regular polygons are polygons with all sides are equal and all angles are equal.
Irregular polygons are polygons that do not have all side equal and all angles equal.

III. Teaching Strategy
Teachers Activity
A. Preparation
1. Performing Routinized Activities
a. Praying
b. Greeting
c. Singing
d. Checking of Attendance
2. Drill
Class, I have here a set of flashcards. As
I flash each card, identify the shapes if it is a

polygon or non-polygon. Say deal, if the shape

is a polygon and no deal if it is a non-polygon.
Is it clear?
Begin.

Yes, it is.

Very good.
You all did it well. Therefore, lets give
ourselves a one big clap.

(The pupils will do the one big clap.)

3. Review
I prepared here an activity to check if
you can still remember our past lesson.
I have here an empty chart on the board.
Now, I want you to fill up this empty chart by
pasting some of the items available on the
table. As I play a song, the pupil who will be
last to hold the box will answer when the
music stops.
Is it clear?
Begin.

Yes, it is.
(The pupils will do the activity.)
Types of Polygons

Yes, they are.

Are they all correct?
Excellent.
All your answers are correct.
Lets all give them Ang Galing-Galing
Clap
Again from our previous lesson, what is
a polygon? Dex.

4. Motivation

(The pupils will do the Ang GalingGaling Clap.)

A polygon is a closed figure with three
or more sides and angles.

Yes, we do.

Do you want another game?

Great.
We will have another activity entitled
whats the image? I have here some puzzle
pieces. Now, I want you to form two groups.
Each group I will be giving different puzzle
pieces to be arranged. The first group who will
be the first to post the picture on the board will
be the winner.

Yes, it is.
(The pupils will do the activity.)

Is it clear?
Begin.

The Group 1 finished the puzzle first

therefore they are the winner for this activity.
Lets give them winner clap.
What have we formed from those
puzzles? Zarah.
Very good.
What else can you observe from the
picture? Francis.
Correct.
What do you call a polygon with 4
sides? Liezel.
Right
I asked you the following questions
because later we will be going to identify more
what are their roles under polygons.
Are you ready to know what are they?
Therefore, listen attentively as we
discover our lesson for today.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Introduction
Now, we are going to talk about the
properties of polygons.

(The pupils will do the winner clap.)

The image we formed from the puzzle

pieces is a rubix cube and a kite.

The two images represent a polygon

with 4 sides but have different shapes.

A polygon with 4 sides is called

quadrilateral.

Yes, we are.

Our topic for today is all about

properties of polygons.

What is our topic for today? Earl.

Good.
(The teacher will post the title of

Our topic for today is all about

properties of polygons.

the topic.)
Everybody, what is our topic for today?
Thank you.
2. Discussion
Class, we already knew that polygons
are closed plane figures with three or more
sides and angles.
From the given images a while ago, I
have here two dimensional figures that are
similar with their shape.
(The teacher will post the two figures.)

The first figure is square and the other one

is rhombus.
Would you tell me the name of those
figures? Kristel.
Very good.
The first figure is an example of a
regular polygon while the second figure is an
example of an irregular polygon.
What can you observe from their sides?
Mitch.

Very good.
Lets verify the observation of Mitch.
Would you go in front and measure the square?
Diana.
Correct.
How about the rhombus, would you go
in front and measure its sides. Sam.

Very good.
Based from the given measurements of
the two figures. Will you give the definition of
a regular polygon? Rey.

The two figures have the same number of

sides but they have different measures because
the rhombus had two longer sides while the
square has equal sides.

The measure of the square is five inches

from all sides.

The measures of rhombus have two

sides with three inches and another two sides
with five inches.

Regular polygon is a polygon with equal

measurement from all sides.

Very good.
Will you repeat the answer of Rey?

Regular polygon is a polygon with equal

measurement from all sides.

Rose.

of a regular polygon.

Thank you.
Will you give an example of a regular
polygon? Loyd.

Correct.
Will you give me the definition of
irregular polygon? Joy.

Equilateral triangle is an example of a

regular polygon.

Irregular polygon is polygons with no

equal measure of sides and angles.

Irregular polygon is polygons with no

equal measure of sides and angles.

Very good.
Will you repeat her answer about
irregular polygon? May.
Good.
Everybody, will you read the definition
of irregular polygon.
Begin.

Irregular polygons are polygons

with different measure of sides and
angles.

The shape of the black board is an

example of an irregular polygon.

Thank you.
Will you give me an example of an
irregular polygon? Jay.
Very good.
Aside from the examples that you have
given a while ago. I have here a chart
composed of regular and irregular polygons.

Yes, it is.

I can act being fair by measuring the rice

cake equally.

Is it important to know the exact

measure of the figures to identify whether it is
regular or irregular polygon?
If you are given a regular square size of
rice cake. How can you act being fair? Earl.

I can act being fair by treating my

classmate equally.

Very good.
How can you be fair on your own way?
Zarah.
Correct.
We can act being fair by treating our
fellow men equal whether we they are rich or
poor.
C. Generalization
Let us see if you really understand our
lesson for today.
What is our topic for today? Karen.

Our topic for today is all about

properties of polygons.

The different properties of polygons are

regular and irregular polygons.

A regular polygon is a polygon with

equal measure of sides and angles.
Right.
What are the different properties of
polygons? Kristel.

An irregular are polygons with no equal

measure of sides and angles.

Very good.
What is a regular polygon? Micah.

Precisely.

(The pupils will do the gets na gets

clap.)

What is an irregular polygon? Allyssa.

Very good.
You understand our lesson for today.
Let us give yourselves a gets na gets
Clap.
D. Application
Group Activity: How do I look?
Directions: Group yourselves into groups composed of 7 members, each member must
draw a shape that corresponds from the given situation.
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

How do I look if I am a regular polygon with 6 sides?

How do I look if I am an irregular polygon with 8 sides?
How do I look if I am an irregular polygon with 5 sides?
How do I look if I am a regular polygon with 9 sides?
How do I look if I am an irregular polygon with 11 sides?

IV. Evaluation
