About Ladakh (Leh)

Ladakh is situated in Jammu & Kashmir and is the highest inhabited region of India. Ladakh,
referred by multiple names such as The Last Shangri-la, Little Tibet, The Land of Numerous
Passes, The Land of Mystic Lamas, The Broken Moon and Moonscape (the Moon Land), is
Page 1/15

a remote yet popular tourist destination characterised by placid blue lakes, freezing winds,
barren landscape and multi-hued mountains.

History of Ladakh
Situated in a high altitude cold desert at about 3500 meters above sea level, Ladakh is tucked
in between the world's greatest mountain ranges, Great Himalayas and the Karakoram. It is
also traversed by two other parallel ranges, Zanskar and Ladakh.
As per geological studies, Ladakh was once a submerged portion of a large lake a few million
years ago. Powerful tectonic movements pushed up the submerged mass to become the
Ladakh of today. This is evident from the drainage basins Tso-moriri, Tsokar, and Pangong-tso,
which are situated on the plateaus of Rupshu and Chushul of south-east Ladakh.
Historically, Ladakh had a kingdom of its own towards the 10th century and was ruled by
dynasties, which were descendants of the kings of Old Tibet. The Himalayan kingdom of
Ladakh reached the summit of its glory during the reign of King Sengge Namgyal in the 17th
century.
The silk route, which connected the plains of India to Central Asia and West Asia, flourished
during this period. Textiles, spices, raw silk, carpets, dyestuffs and narcotics were the goods
traded by the merchants during this period. Leh, the capital city of the Himalayan kingdom of
Ladakh, gradually became a bustling entry point in this trade route.
Later, the kingdom of Ladakh, along with the neighbouring province of Baltistan, was
incorporated with Jammu & Kashmir in the 18th century. Post Independence, Baltistan became
a part of Pakistan whereas Ladakh remained with Jammu & Kashmir.

People & Culture of Ladakh

Ladakh is famous for its dramatic landscape and Buddhist heritage. Ladakhi, Purig, Tibetan,
Hindi and English are spoken in the region. There are many picturesque hamlets in Ladakh
situated on the banks of the Indus River. All these villages have Buddhist monasteries or
gompas, which are located atop hillocks in their vicinity.
Buddha Purnima, Dosmoche, Galdan Namchot and Losar are the most celebrated festivals in
Ladakh. The Dosmoche Festival is also another of significant festival of the region. The two-day
event involves dramatic dance performances by monks and offerings made by them to ward off
evil spirits and ill fortune and draws many tourists to the region.
Leh, the principal town of Ladakh, is bordered by Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the west, China
in the north & east, Lahul Spiti of Himachal Pradesh in the south-east and Stok mountain range
in the south. Today, Leh is an important Buddhist centre and it houses a settlement for Tibetan
refugees.

Things to do in Ladakh
Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fame, Hemis Gompa, Shey Palace, Stok Palace and Museum,
Thiksey Gompa, Alchi Choskor and Lamayuru Gompa are chief attractions in Ladakh-Leh. Leh
also offers travellers a chance to participate in adventure sports like mountaineering, white
water rafting and trekking. For the same, tourists can opt for Ladakh holiday packages.

Food & shopping in Ladakh

Page 2/15

The region has many small restaurants and pit stops run by locals, which serve traditional
Tibetan food such as momos and thukpa. The butter tea served here made with yaks milk is a
must-try. There is not much to shop in Ladakh except souvenirs from local stores.

Travelling to Ladakh
The best time to visit Ladakh is during summers from the month of June to September. Tourists
are advised to carry a lot of woolens, as it tends to get extremely cold even during the summer
season. The best way to reach Ladakh is by road. Tourists can drive down from Manali to Leh
or also enter the region via Srinagar.

Travelling within Ladakh

The best way to get around Ladakh is either by hiring a taxi or renting a bike. Tourists visiting
the area generally travel to the destination in their own vehicles. Since the terrain is rough and
unpredictable, tourists are advised to carry spare parts and other essentials while visiting
Ladakh.

Accommodation options in Ladakh

Hotel options in Ladakh include budget, lodges and luxury hotels. Tourists visiting Ladakh can
also opt for other accommodation options, ranging from guesthouses to resorts.

Featured review about Ladakh (Leh)

Adventurous location, Ladakh
"Leh-Ladakh is most scenic place that one should visit once in a lifetime. Wide variety of
mountains and clear skies makes this the most beautiful place in India. Mode of communication
should obviously be Bikes- RE bullets. Local Taxis are also available. Not so many good food
joints available but you cannot expect them at this height and remote location. Oxygen
percentage is very less and one should acclimatise before moving on to heights. Khardung La
top located at 18300 feet is world's highest memorable road located around 60Km from Leh
city. Most scenic Pangong lake is about 150KM from Leh and accommodation is available on
tent basis at the lake if you want to stay. Monasteries are something which one should visit and
experience the Ladakhi culture while you are in Leh city.

Best time to visit - May to September

Routes by Road - Srinagar to Leh highway OR Manali to Leh highway.
PS: don't hurry in visiting places. Go slow enjoy your ride and get acclimatise before heading
towards Pangong and Khardung La." - Yogesh Patil, Pune, 3 weeks ago

An amazing place to visit-Ladakh

"Leh has several sightseeing places which are very beautiful. One of the main attractions is the
pangong lake where the 3idiots last scene was shot. The Pangong lake started developing only
after the 3 idiots was shot. At the lake you can have a halt where there are 90% camp stays
which are amazing. When I had been there it started snowing the whole night and the camp
stay was really horrifying as it was really cold and we were freezes. But that experience is once
in a lifetime. The colours of the lakes keep changing every 5-10 mins. This kind of experience
can never be felt with any other place. The breathing would be a problem for some people
where there are oxygen masks available at camps held by the army and defence. Advised to
take diamox tablets before going there in order to acclimatise to that climate. The diamox tablet
may cause constipation and consuming water when taken diamox is a must as all the water is
absorbed by diamox tablet. Carry as many as warm clothes which you have. You would be
visiting the highest point Khardung La pass which is the highest in the world.
Kindly note : only postpaid sims work and that too only in few places." - Vedhosi Vaibhav,

An amazing trip to Ladakh

"It was my longtime wish to visit Ladakh, the northernmost region of India, and at last it was
fulfilled this year in May. I had read about its extreme climate so when kids decided they are not
accompanying us I was bit relaxed.
Leh is at an altitude of 3524 meters (11, 562 ft), and connects to Srinagar on one side and
Manali on other via 1D highway. We were told to acclimatize and take rest before starting our
tour in Leh due to high altitude. We took rest after reaching hotel, bath was out of question...
First time in my life I had experienced minus temperature but luckily it was bright and sunny so
we could sit out in sun and enjoy its warmth.
You have to be in Leh at least for 6-7 days for fully exploring it. As you have to visit monasteries
around different directions. Alchi, lamayuru, likir. All monasteries are almost 700-2000 years old.
You will be amazed by colours and construction of these monasteries. One day was for Nubra
valley via Khardungla pass which is at 18300 ft highest motorable road. Road is zigzag with
snow covered mountains around you.
Another day was spent in travelling to Pangong Tso lake. It is at an altitude of 4300m and is
more famous due to 3 Idiots movie. The heavenly beauty of lake make you forget everything..
Most scenic place I have ever visited. You have to see it to believe it. Changing colours of sky

and its reflection in lake. It's a bliss to be in Laddakh." - Pallavi Sapre, Mumbai, 2 months

Incredible Ladakh!
"The Manali-Leh highway is open to travel only for 4 and half months, but take it from me- each
of the 475 kilometers of that journey comprises the journey of a lifetime. With an average
decline of 30% Oxygen, acclimatization is a gradual and necessary process. We stayed the
night at Keylong, one of the only bigger towns on the Manali-Leh highway but the real icing on
the cake was the temporary lay over at Pang! Located in the middle of nowhere this is where I
had my most memorable moments in Ladakh, trapped in the middle of a frozen mountain
desert with trucker wives for company and maggi as food. Next, Having crossed the LachungLa pass, Naki-La pass and finally the second highest motorable road Baralachala Pass, we
finally descended into the green valleys of Ladakh! I instantly fell in love with Leh- Its people, Its
markets, the German bakery, the Monasteries- I remember feeling, and knowing peace.
Pangong lake, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers had us awestruck followed by a
trip to Khardung-la, the highest motorable road of the world.
I remember walking the streets of Leh, guided by nothing but milky moonlight and I remember
feeling so much, so much love in that city- that till today, I feel like I would have gladly stayed
back there." - Apoorva Bhardwaj, Mumbai, 2 months ago

The land of high mountain passes and landscapes : Ladakh

"It is s a beautiful place to visit not as a tourist but as a traveler. Every photograph you take here
becomes the perfect shot for viewer because this place is kind a land of landscapes on can
visit. Breathtaking views of glaciers, mountain passes, blue skies, sunshines and snowfall these
all can be experienced here in a single trip. This is truely a desert in the skies because like in
desert here you can get tanned due to sunlight in the day and get shivered due to sudden dip in
the temperature at night. Ladakhi people are very kind and humble, they know the true meaning
of "Atithi Devo Bhava". I will luv to visit here again!! :))
Must watch places around leh: Leh palace, Shey palace, Thiksey monastry, leh market, Shanti
stupa (both at night n morning time because the view from this place is just incredible)
One must acclimatize on reaching leh, atleast you should take rest of 2 days before starting
your trip from leh and around. Travelling on world's highest moterable road and reaching at
world's highest mountain pass by self driving gives such an amazing feeling. All i can say is
