support of parents, guardians, families and communities
in schools.
I planned and taught an interdisciplinary
Community unit which involved field trips to
places in our community (Fire Station, Police
Station and Public Library). Students had the
opportunity to make connections to places and
people in the community. We also created a 3D
“Classroom Community” each students added an
important part of our community such as stores,
services, houses or roads.

from parents to speak about their careers as Nurses
to an Elder in the community from the Aboriginal
Cultural Centre.

 Standard 6: Educators have a broad knowledge base and
understand the subject areas they teach.

I have a well-rounded education, with an Honors B.A. from The University of Western Ontario. I have a
double major in English, Language and Literature and Media, Information and Techno-culture as well as a
writing certificate. I completed a Canadian Studies course from TRU and Math course from NIC.

In my Post-Baccalaureate Education program at VIU I continued to educate myself and expand my

knowledge by attending the Fundamental Movement Skills workshop, Kerri Isham’s Sexual Education
workshops, and a variety of courses ranging from Governance and Social Justice to Physical Education,
Science, Language Arts, Child & Youth Development and Math with a focus on Elementary Education.

 Standard 7: Educators engage in career long learning.

I participated in I.E.P meetings, staff meetings and “Laura uses reflection as a tool to improve her own
P.L.C. Meetings with my colleagues at Fairview and practice (What worked? What didn’t work? What
other pre-service teachers. are my next steps?) She seeks feedback as a learning
opportunity and puts suggestions into practice.” -
During my practicum I learned how to use the Terrill MacDonald, Field Supervisor
Smart Board, Scanner and new programs on the
Ipad. I also continue to search for resources on
Pinterest, Teacher Pay Teacher and the internet to
enhance my lessons.

 Standard 8: Educators contribute to the profession.  

During my final practicum I had the opportunity to
mentor Bachelor of Education Year 4 Students. I
was able to support them with any questions or
concerns during their practicum or relating to their
upcoming spring practicum.
For Halloween my colleagues and I organized BOO
DAY. A school-wide halloween day. Classes rotated
around the school to different activities such as
Yoga, Spooky Stories, Crafts and Halloween Bingo
