Genre Study- Fairy Tales
Dr. Powell
Fairy tales have always been a love and an interest of mine.
Escaping life for a little and reading a fairy tale is always fun for
students to do. I have picked out six different fairy tales that portray
the elements of a fairy tale and many literacy skills. Elements of a fairy
tale include a special beginning and or ending words, for example
once upon a time or and they lived happily ever after. There are
always good characters, evil characters, sometimes a witch or evil
stepsister. There is usually royalty, which can include a castle, a prince,
and a princess. There is magic and enchantment for example fairies,
talking animals, and characters flying these are some of the main
factors that make these stories fairy tales. My activities and fairy tale
stories are for a second grade class. I have chosen Cinderella, Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding
hood, and Peter Pan. I have found fun activities to go along with all six
of my selections. Also for my selections students will be given a
worksheet, which is to be completed after reading and listening. The
worksheet has boxes on it for beginning, middle and end. Students will
write two sentences about each and then draw a
picture. On the front of the worksheet are four
boxes for four fun facts the students learn while
reading/listing to the story. This worksheet will
act as an exit slip for the students before they
are allowed to start their other activities that go
along with the story.
The first fairy tale I am going to start with
is Cinderella, I am going to read the story to my
students and have them think about whether its
fiction or nonfiction and why? I will ask questions
throughout the story to check for understanding. When we are finished
reading the story I will talk to the students about the different
characters, settings, and events that took place. I will make a chart for
each of these elements when talking about the different fairy tales. I
will check for different vocabulary throughout the story as well. Some
core vocabulary words for Cinderella are characters, embraced,
splendor, warning and worthy. I will go over each of the words before
reading and highlight them when reading the story. Students will write
two sentences in their writing journals using two or more of the new
vocabulary words. Then they can start their activity. The activity I
chose for Cinderella is a free write students will have eight minuets to
write two wishes they would like the fairy godmother to grant for them.
Their final writing piece will be done on sparkly paper. I will also have

students make their own magic wand to place at the bottom of their
writing to decorate their piece. This project will also focus on phonemic
awareness, students will be asked to sound out words and do the best
they can when writing. This is a fun activity I think the students can
truly get creative with it!
The second fairy tale I chose was Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs. Students
will be asked similar questions as with
the first story in terms of setting,
characters, and events that took place
throughout the story. With Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs students will be
asked to write a continuation of the
ending or write a letter to one of the
seven dwarfs. The story ends Then Snow White, and the prince rode
off to his kingdom, where they lived happily ever after. I want
students to write what they think happens a day in the kingdom. What
happens to the seven dwarfs? Do they go with Snow White? If they
choose to write a letter to one of the seven dwarfs they can talk about
how school is, what their favorite activities are, and why they are
writing to that dwarf. Students will be working on their Pre-write
coming up with a few ideas, then go into their drafts then move onto
their R.E.A.D. portion of the paper, which I will help them with. I will
help students to rearrange, exchange, add and delete unnecessary
words. Doing writing this way will help with the alphabet principle and
basic phonics. I can work one on one with students to help them to
sound out words, as well as, help
students to delete words that could
be used somewhere else or expand
on sentences to help them to make
more sense. I will be checking for
correct grammar, punctuation and
spelling. Once students are ready for
their final draft students will be given
magical fairy tale paper to write their
final drafts on to hang up around the
room and share with the rest of the
class.
The third story in our fairy tale unit I will The Three Little Pigs.
Students will again fill out an exit slip and questions will be asked
throughout the story to ensure understanding. The activity I have
chosen for this story is a sequencing one. Students will receive cards
from the story with the three houses on them and have to place them
in order from which house was built first to which house was built last.
Students will be able to color in their sequencing stories. This will also

help with students comprehension of the story to make sure they

comprehended what happened, where and when.
The fourth fairy tale I chose was Jack and the Bean Stalk.
Students will listen to the story I will ask questions throughout to
ensure good listeners. For my
activity I am going to incorporate
some math into my project for the
students. I am going to have
students build a beanstalk going into
the sky on construction paper. They
will measure out their beanstalk in
inches, up to nine inches then it will
hit the sky. I will have cotton for
them to use as the sky and beans for
them to use on theyre paper as
well. This story will also help with students comprehension because
they will have to try and comprehend how tall the beanstalk is and how
high up into the sky it went.
The fifth fairy tale I choose was Little Red
Riding Hood. This is a fun story that everyone
in class will enjoy. This story will be taught the
same as above stories. The activity for Little
Red Riding Hood is to make a puppet. I will give
students a worksheet to color Little Red Riding
Hood in and then students will cut out the
pieces and put together using paper fasteners.
Students have to understand that letter with
circles on them go on the top, while circle-less
letter go on the bottom. We will hang up out Little Red Riding Hoods
around the room for everyone to enjoy. My activity focuses on alphabet
principle and basic phonics since students need to match up the letters
that go on the top and bottom. Another activity I have for the students
to do is to write two complete sentences of how the wolf disguised
himself as her grandma. This activity will work on the students
comprehension and the personification within the story and how its a
fiction fairy tale.
My final fairy tales Ive chosen is Peter Pan. This is one of my
favorite stories. We will break this story down and really talk about the
magic in it and dreaming big. I have a quote I will put in the middle and
then students are going to write their own stories about a dream they
may want to achieve in the future. The quote I will be using is So
come with us, where dreams are born and time is never planned. Just
think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wing, forever, in never
land. For the students stories I will be giving them sentence starters
such as, One day I dream to, or when I am older I hope, etc. I will have
students practice their pre- writing, draft and R.E.A.D methods. I will sit

with students and go over

their stories with them. I will
be checking for fluency of
their stories, making their
thoughts flow nicely by using
the correct compound words
such as and, but or etc. Once I
have okayed their drafts for
them they are to start their
writing I will give them special
Peter Pan paper to write their
dream stories on!
Overall, the six fairy tales I read to the class will have a
worksheet to go with them they must complete before starting their
activities. Some of these activities will take more than a few days to
complete and thats okay. Some of the writing will be works in
progress. I will go over the setting, characters, and events of each
story. Vocabulary and questions will be presented for each story. Five
literacy skills will be used for throughout these six stories they are
phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle and basic phonics,
fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. These are all embedded
within the stories as well as with in our projects we will be doing. The
fairy tale unit is going to be a fun unit. Working with fairy tales is close
to my heart, I have always loved magical creatures and dreaming big
and I think reading these stories help to open our eyes to these things.
Working at Disney helped to open my eyes even more to magic and
fairy tales. Coming up with all these different activities for the students
was neat, I tired to incorporated different writing styles, I gave
students choices and I incorporated some cross subjects areas too.
Fairy tales have always been close to my heart and we will defiantly be
studying them in classroom someday.
