1.2 Anticipatory Set

The students will get their iPad out of the iPad cart.

They will be asked to come up to the front and put them into a large box.

T will tell them that the school has decided that iPads dont help kids learn and so they are no
longer allowed to use them in class.

T will recognize the audible groan from the students and calm any retaliation.

T will explain that while the teacher is in charge of the classroom, the principal makes decisions
for the whole school and then the superintendent makes the decisions for the whole district. T will
explain that her job is to make rules for the class, but she must also follow the rules of the whole
school. In order to change the rule, students would have to convince the principal. If that doesn't
work, we would have to convince the Superintendent because the principal has to follow the rules
of the district. If THAT didnt work, we could go and present our argument to a government
official.

T will ask the students if they can honestly give any reasons why an iPad would help learning.

T will create a web on the board that shows some of the students ideas that are shared.

o Students will give reasons.

T will ask if the students feel as though the iPads help them learn.

o Students will respond.

T will tell the students to put together a presentation for the principal.

Students will be told to get their iPads out of the bucket and explore the technology in order to
acclimate them to the technology.

1.3 Procedures

The students will have all received a link to the Google Doc. PowerPoint. Each student will have
one slide with his/her name on it.

They will look at the topic on their slide and do some preliminary research with their partner who
has the same topic.

The students will write 1 interesting fact and one way they use this resource in class as well as
one other way the iPad app could be used in the classroom.

Topics (and corresponding resources) are as follows:

o Kahoot https://kahoot.it/#/ & iPad App

o National Geographic Kids App https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/national-geographickids/id436482773?mt=8 & iPad & http://www.nationalgeographic.com/apps/kids/

o Barefoot World Atlas http://kidworldcitizen.org/2013/02/28/best-apps-for-kids-to-learngeography/ & iPad App

o Word Clouds iPad & App & sample word clouds from throughout the year saved to their
devices in the photos section

o Book Creator iPad & Book Creator App

o Dragon Dictation iPad & Dragon Dictation App
o Quizlet iPad & www.Quizlet.com
o YouTube iPad & www.youtube.com
o Maps iPad & Maps App
o Facetime Facetime App & iPad & Guest speaker that they can call to learn about How
iPads helped Her communicate and learn (Kendra, a nonverbal adult who uses assistive
tech to communicate)

Each student will come up with a unique reason why this App, and the iPad as a whole, increase
their ability to learn.

They will create a slide with their point and rationale as well as a picture that relates to their
topic.

Once they are done, the students will put this star at the bottom of 3 other slides with whom they
agree.

1.4 Differentiation

The apps are purposefully assigned based on skill level

For students who learn better through exploration, they can look through websites that they are
assigned and use the apps to gain an understanding of how they work.

Pairing up on the project will round out any gaps in understanding on the part of a single student,
and will allow them to each bring a unique perspective to a debatable issue.

For students who learn best through conversation and listening, there are two Apps that require
discussion or learning through speaking and listening.

Student interests can be addressed through the assignment of different apps and partner
combinations.

Students will be assigned a partner who is of a similar skill level.

1.5 Closure

The students will come together as a class and have a discussion about how they could conclude
their PowerPoint for the principal.

The principal will come into the class and each student will get a chance to read their slide to the
principal.

The Principal will reluctantly allow students to keep the iPads in their class.
