Jenna Covington Grant Proposal

***I am not submitting this grant for I do not yet have a classroom, and I
have responded to the prompts accordingly. I have no prior experience
writing grants, so this is my first attempt. I learned a LOT through my
research in finding a grant that applies to what I want in my future
classroom, along with writing it.

Project Description
-What technology or technologies do you plan to integrate and why did you
choose these technologies?
-How will your project integrate technology into the curriculum in unique or
innovative ways to improve student achievement?
-How does this project change or improve the way technology is incorporated
into the curriculum and teaching practices in your classroom and school?
-How will this technology support the needs of your students?
I plan to integrate a classroom set of iPads in my Art classroom. I chose iPads
to include in my classroom for a variety of reasons. Digital technology will
enhance my students ability to obtain necessary skills in todays culture
such as visual literacy, critical thinking and problem solving. IPads also
provide new and improved forms of assessment which allow students to
reflect on their progress as well as receive and provide commentary and
feedback for others. There are endless opportunities for easily and efficiently
sharing a students progress with their parent or guardian, or sharing the
entire class work with the community. When posting art work on a digital

platform that remains privately or publicly online beyond the art course,
students will have access to their virtual portfolios and be able to build on
them far into the future. When students post photos, videos, artist
statements, responses, etc., this information is organized and easily
accessible by me throughout the semester. I can use this data for summative
and formative assessments. Other than the countless ways that IPads can
enhance and innovate the curriculum for student success, the IPad provides
an immediate gateway to an infinite amount of resources and information for
my students to use when exploring the realm of creation. Without IPads in
the classroom, students do not have access to quick feedback and
commentary from peers, parents, and the community, unless it is written
down. A lot of the time during discussion and critique, there are golden
nuggets of information that potentially provide new avenues of deeper
thinking that are forgotten and abandoned. Knowledge of process and
technique along with tangible product are difficult to preserve over time.
With photographs and videos of process and creation, my students will be
able to preserve and access these lifelong tools.
Expected impact on academic achievement.
-What learning and skill development will result from this project?
-How are the academic achievement goals of this project aligned with state
academic standards?
-What gaps in the current curriculum or classroom experience will this project
address?
-How will improvement be measured?
In this culture, technology is increasingly relevant in almost all aspects of life
such as in every day communication, in convenience and ease of daily
functions, or in classrooms and higher education. With IPads in my Art
classroom, students will learn a variety of skills used to navigate technology
and a variety of academic applications. For example, Seesaw is an App my
class can use to upload images, videos, notes, voiceovers, and etc. for an
assignment. These posts can then be accessed by a students parent, made
public to the rest of the class, or uploaded to the classroom blog which can
be viewed by the community. Teacher access also includes data graphs and
grading among other functions. Through this application alone, students
learn how to critically think and write about their art while considering how it
will be viewed by others, how to review process and progress through video
while problem solving, how to talk about their art which provides avenues of
reflection and learning, or how to comment on other student work, which is
an art in itself.
Having IPads in my classroom would align with many aspects of the Missouri
Visual Arts Standards through communicating ideas, exploring digital
software, researching historical and contemporary art of different cultures,
and integrating music, film studies, photography, and many other art forms

into their work. Using specific applications, such as iMovie, students can
layer and organize images with videos, sounds, text, and voiceovers in order
to enhance thinking and create deeper meaning. Improvement can be
measured through a timeline of data containing photo and video evidence of
process and product.
Media art encourages designing, creating, and critiquing genres that
connect to youth culture and engage youth in the process of learning more
actively than what is traditionally offered in schools, especially in
marginalized communities (Peppler, pg. 2119). Through art, we can
enhance learning to incorporate the youths out-of-school identities. When
learning through modes that are relevant and interesting to the students,
they will be more engaged and encounter deeper thinking. It is important to
argue for an expansion of the curriculum to include teaching youth how to
work with new technologies as an expressive medium and to become
software literate as well as enabling youth to produce new tools and modes
of communication (Peppler, pg. 2147).
Peppler, Kylie, A. August, 2010. Media arts: arts education for a digital
design. Teachers College Record.
Scope of Impact:
-How will this project change instructional practice and result in 21st century
learning (relevant, real world problem solving and critical thinking)?
The youth need education on new media in this ever-expanding technological
present which will enable them to build, communicate and participate in
society in ways that were never before imagined. Visually literate citizens
understand the role and functions of art in history and culture. Artists
influence and are influenced by the cultures and time periods in which they
live (Visual, 2007). In our culture, visual media is prominent among
technology and social media platforms. It is imperative that students learn
how to be visually literate and analyze what is before their eyes every day.
Through the use of IPads, my students will be able to learn how to
investigate, critique, and respond to media. They will also use them to create
new media contributing to our digitally advanced culture.

Please provide a brief explanation and description (not to exceed
200 words) of the proposed expenditures and how they relate to
successful implementation of the project. Be sure to discuss how
the project will be sustained after the grant funds have been
expended.

In order to successfully implement my classrooms use of technology to

enhance learning in the art classroom, I will need one classroom set of IPads.
These IPads will be used in the art room alone for many years, providing an
exponential amount of students with new opportunities for culturally relevant
learning. Each IPad costs $259 with no shipping fee. With a maximum of
$5,000 to spend with the privilege of this grant, I will use $4,921 to purchase
19 IPads for my classroom.
