Gold Band
Skating Trip
By Victoria Johnson
7th and 8th graders went to Joyland Skating Rink in Cabot as an Incentive Trip for
gold bands for the 3rd
quarter of the school year. A lot of 7th
and 8th graders fell multiple times, especially one of my friends because he
was a beginner, but everyone kept getting back up and trying again. At first I
was nervous about skating again, but
thanks to one of my other friends I had
a lot of fun. There were four different
races, each separated by our grades and
genders. We owe a special thanks to
Mrs. A. Smith who arranged the trip
and arranged for the school to pay for
it, so it was free to people that earned it.
A special thanks to Ms. Wright and
Mrs. Perry for going with us. Thanks
to all the parents that came to help too.
It was really fun and
I cant wait to see
what the incentive
trip will be next
quarter.
The 8th Grade had a field trip to the Old State House Museum and the Historic Arkansas Museum on March 29, 2016.
The Day was really fun. We left at 9 AM; it felt like we were on the bus for a while, but knowing we are the class of 2020,
we had fun on our way there. First, we went to the Old State House Museum. When we got there, we all were split up
into the two groups. We went into many rooms, and learned a lot of cool history. Did you know that the Old State House
Museum has been the state capital, the UAMS campus, and the headquarters for the Arkansas Rangers, now known as the
Arkansas State Troopers. The Old State House Museum was really big inside, and we got to see the First Ladies of Arkansas inaugural gowns.
After the first museum, we went to play, eat, and chill at the River Market Amphitheater. We ended up on the news on
THV because they were filming a promo for Spring Fest. After we were done eating, we went to the second museum, the
Historic Arkansas Museum. This museum was kind of small, but really fun. The museum people told our teachers we
were well-behaved. Im glad we got to go on this field trip, and I learned a lot. 7th Grade went on the same trip on Tuesday, March 15th before Spring Break. 8th Grade will be going to Crystal Bridges and the University of Arkansas on June
2nd.
The Switch:
ACT Aspire Axes PARCC
By Kayla Workman
We recently questioned why we were switching from PARCC to
ACT aspire. I asked Mrs. A. Smith, Flightlines Director of
Teacher Leadership, how ACT Aspire is different than last years
PARCC? Mrs. Smith says it takes less time to take, so we dont
sit and spend an hour on one subject. Instead scholars are timed
and get about 55 minutes per subject. This test is also split into
separate weeks instead of all in one week. I asked Mrs. Smith if
as been proven and if kids do better on the test than on the test we
have been taking. Mrs. Smith says for our school, it is a little too
soon to tell at the time we did the interview. Mrs. Smith also said
other schools have proof that the system works, and that kids are
proven to perform better on the ACT Aspire format. I asked her in her opinion if she thinks it will improve test scores? Mrs.
Smith says I think our scholars will do their best and be successful regardless because they are our scholarsso I dont
think it matters what test they take. I think as long as they rise to the challenge they will be successful. I asked her what
her motive was behind making sure scholars do well and be successful on their tests? She said I want every scholar in this
school to be successful, productive citizens, and I want them to go to college and do what they dream. I want to be able to
know when Im old and grey, you all will take care of me.
Dear Class,
I know you probably miss me; I know I miss you guys. I am in North Carolina right now. We have
had our ups and downs together, and have even been yelled at together. I have known some of you
since the 5th grade. I think you are the best class I have ever had. Stand up for what you believe in. I
want to see you all again when I grow up. Furthermore, teachers, make sure these kids succeed in
life. I hope you get what you want out of life. Thank you, guys, for everything.

Magic Piano
By Alena Fialkowski
Magic Piano is a game where you tap on your
screen where you are supposed to tap when it tells
you to and it makes a sound like a piano. The objective of the game is to level up, get
coins, and songs to help you do all that. The first song
that you see is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and you
go on from there. You can also get songs like
Amazing Grace and Fur Elise. The app makes
playing a piano look easy, even when you know it is
not. The app is a freemium app, which means it is
free unless you want to purchase VIP songs.

Did you
know that
April Fools
Day may have
begun in
France?
By Holidays.net
While some historians disagree, the most popular theory about the origins of this day for pranks and practical
jokes is that it began in the 1500s in France, when the
start of the New Year
was moved from March
to January. Word of the
move traveled slowly to
the rural dwellers, who
continued to celebrate
the New Year in April,
earning them the title of
"April fools."
Water Problems
in Flint, Michigan
By Zaria Cooper
Citizens of Flint, Michigan feel betrayed, angry, and sad at the same time.
They are bracing for what will happen of their city of 99,000 residents in the
next year. Flint is about 60 miles northwest of Detroit, Michigan. In 2014, someone had the idea of switching their drinking water source to the Flint River, which was heavily polluted, and then the water was switched back. The water was
switched back too late and the mistake left permanent and expensive damage to Flints water pipes.
Children in Flint are getting hurt with an illness called lead poisoning. It is caused by dangerous levels of lead in childrens blood. Exposure to lead can be toxic, or deadly. Doctors say that the impact of lead poisoning can take three to
five years after having it to appear.
Help is needed fast. Water in Flint homes varies in colors from clear to cloudy, and even brown to yellow. In this dangerous time, Flint citizens are refusing to drink the water or even take a bath or shower in it. Michigan Governor Rick
Snyder declared a state of emergency for the town on January 5, 2016 after the problem began in April 2014. Thats almost two years of exposure.
People in Flint have said that public trust has been shattered, and that long-term help for Flint residents is far away.
Right now, the people that live there cant even sell their houses because no one wants to move to a town with poison for
drinking water. Residents dont know what dangers their children may and will face from their exposure to lead poisoning.
People have lined up to pick up free water filters and bottled water at fire stations. More free supplies have been passed out by Michigan State Troopers, and
other volunteers. Plumbers have even spent their free time installing water filters
for free to families in the affected area. Flint Mayor Karen Weaver said that the
city has made progress, but that Flint needs more people to help out.
Flint, Michigan has a long way to go. Citizens flocked to polling centers for
Michigans primary races. Some polling places had to send people to other places
to vote because the centers were running out of ballots.
