T.P.R. (Total Physical Response) Lesson Plan

Content Area: Mathematics

WIDA ELP Standard(s):
English language learners communicate information, ideas and concepts necessary for
academic success in the content area of mathematics. (Language of Mathematics)
English language learners communicate for social and instructional purposes within the
school setting. (Social and Instructional language)
State standard, grade-level expectation & evidence outcomes:
Grade level: 1st Grade
Standard 4. Shape, Dimension, and Geometric Relations
Evidence Outcome:
b. Tell and write time.
i. Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital
clocks.
Topic/Focus: How to tell/show time.
ESL Level: Level 1 (This lesson plan is designed for beginners only, they are NOT expected to
talk. They show what they know through gestures.)

Objectives: After the lesson, the students will be able to demonstrate that they know
how to tell time using hours and half hours by showing it on a clock.

Target Vocabulary:
Commands
Look
Tell
Show

Materials AND Realia Needed:

Vocabulary words
Hour
Half-hour
30 minutes

30 minutes (picture)
Look (picture)
Write (picture)

Anticipatory Set: Run in saying Im late! Im late! Im late! I dont know the time!
Does anyone have the time? Nobody knows how to tell time!? Let me teach you!!
Direct Instruction/Modeling/Demonstration:
1. Anticipatory Set.
2. Look at the clock. Look at the clock. Look at the clock! (Do motion for look
and point to the realia clock while saying the sentence. Get out the pictures and
show those.) (Encourage the students to join in the motions if they are not.)
3. Tell me the time. Tell me the time. Tell me the time. (Do the motions for tell
and time. Get out the pictures and show those.) (Encourage the students to join in
the motions if they are not.)
4. Do the same for the vocabulary words show, hour, half hour, and 30
minutes.
5. Once the students have practiced those and appear to have the gestures, play
Simon Says.
6. Very good! (Thumbs up) Now, lets play Simon Says. Simon says.
7. Play Simon Says.
8. Very good! (Thumbs up) Now lets play Simon Says with our eyes closed!
Simon says
9. Play Simon Says with eyes closed.
10. Hand out the clocks to each student.
11. Show the students one hour and half hour on the clock.
12. Show me one oclock. (Give more examples. Have the students show you their
clocks.)
13. Closure
Checking for Understanding:
I will watch for their gestures during scaffolding, Simon Says (eyes open and closed), and
during the time they are showing me the time I tell them.
Write down three physical ways students will demonstrate their understanding of
commands and vocabulary being practiced:
.
1. Students will play Simon Says.
2. Students will demonstrate the motions with their eyes closed.
3. Students will show the time that I tell them on a clock.

Play a game (or other extension activity):

Simon says: play this game when you take away doing the gestures with them. Then play
it with their eyes closed! (Described in description of lesson above.)
Evaluation:
I will know the students understand the words while we play Simon Says with our eyes
closed; this will allow me to see if they need to look at a friend or if they know it
themselves.
I will also know if the students understand the words when they are showing me the time
at the end of the lesson; this will show me if they understand time, too.
I will take mental notes and go back and review words if a student/(s) do/does not
understand the words. (Go back and do gestures with them and slowly take them away
again.)
Closure: Im late! Im late! Im late! Can anyone tell me the time!? Look at our
classroom clock! Show me the time!
