OVERVIEW OF STEPS TAKEN TO CREATE THE FINAL PART:

OVERVIEW OF STEPS TAKEN TO CREATE THE FINAL PART:

Open the pre-made CAD Model:
The student should examine the part file to understand what part is
being created in the tutorial.

Create the necessary Toolpaths to machine the part:

The student will set up the stock size to be used and the appropriate
tool settings.
The cutouts will be machined using a contour toolpath with Axis
Substitution.
Create a drill toolpath to drill the 25/64" hole in a new defined tool
plane, then Transform the tool path to drill the rest of the holes.
Machine the top slot using a contour toolpath.
Machine the bigger slot in a new defined tool plane using a contour
toolpath.

Backplot and Verify the file:

The Backplot will be used to simulate a step by step process of the
tools movements.
The Verify will be used to watch a tool machine the part out of a solid
model.
The student will also learn how to use the remove chips option to see
the completed part without any leftover material.

Post Process the file to generate the G-code:

The Student will then post process the file to obtain an NC file
containing the necessary code for the machine.

This tutorial takes approximately one hour to complete.

SELECT THE GEOMETRY FILE

TUTORIAL #41

This tutorial covers Mastercam's 4 and 5-Axis toolpath functionality. To apply these toolpaths to a 5-Axis machine tool, a
customized post processor for your machine is required.
There are no default 5-Axis post processors included with Mastercam due to the variation in multi-axis machine
configurations. Contact your Mastercam reseller to request post processor services such as multi-axis post development.
Your post processor may require certain additional programming information not covered in this tutorial. For instance:
You may be required to position your stock in machine space rather than at Mastercam's origin.
You may be required to use the Misc Values box.
Your post may also prompt for tool gage lengths.
The nature of the additional information required depends largely on your machine's configuration. Contact the developer
of your post processor for details.

STEP 1: SELECT THE GEOMETRY FILE

Resources - Download the file from www.emastercam.com/files/.
File

Open.
Select "TUTORIAL 4.MCX-6" from the directory you saved the file in.

SELECT THE MACHINE AND SET UP THE STOCK

STEP 2: SELECT THE MACHINE AND SET UP THE STOCK

In Mastercam, you select a Machine Definition before creating any toolpaths. The Machine Definition is a model of your
machine tool's capabilities and features and acts like a template for setting up machining jobs. The machine definition ties
together three main components: the schematic model of your machine tools components, the control definition that
models your control units capabilities and the post processor that will generate the required machine code (G-code). For
the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using the Mill 4-Axis VMC machine.

NOTE: If you already have the default machine in the Toolpaths Operations Manager, do not select another
machine. Expand Properties and select Files, and then select Replace button and select the MILL 4 - AXIS VMC
MM.MMD-6.
2.1 Select the Machine Type
NOTE: The instructions on how to add the machine in the short list are provided in Tutorial 1 page 1-6.

Warn of duplicate tool numbers allows
you to get a warning if you enter two
tools with the same number.

enables the system to keep the values

Feed Calculation set From tool uses
feed rate, plunge rate, retract rate and
spindle speed from the tool definition.

Toolpath Preview:

NOTE: Before you can create rotary axis motion, you need to properly configure the rotary axis components in
your machine definition. You will only be able to select rotary axis options which are supported by your
machine definition.
Mastercam can simulate the rotary axis performance while backplotting the toolpath. To enable this feature,
go to the Backplot Options dialog box and select Simulate Axis Substitution or Simulate Rotary Axis.

3.4 Set the Cut Parameters

Cut Parameters page is used to enter the cutting parameters for a contour toolpath.
Tool compensation adjusts the toolpath to allow for the cutting tools radius. The tool can be offset to the right or left of
the geometry, with respect to the chaining direction used when selecting the geometry.

Select the Cut Parameters page and make sure that Cutter compensation in Computer is enabled and set to
the Left as shown in Figure: 3.4.1.

Make all necessary changes and change all Length and Radius values equal 60.0 of the Tool Diameter as shown
in Figure: 3.4.2.
Figure: 3.4.2

NOTE: Setting the Lead in/out Length to 60.0% of the tool diameter allows the tool enough space to
compensate correctly while using cutter compensation in control. Because in our case we are using cutter
compensation in computer, a smaller value can also be used.

Linking Parameters
In this page you can set the Clearance, the Retract, the Feed plane heights, the Top of stock and the final machining depth.

From the Tree view area, select Linking Parameters and change the heights as shown.

NOTE: The absolute values are measured from the 69.0 mm diameter cylinder, setup in the Rotary axis control
page. The incremental values are measured from the chained geometry.

TUTORIAL #41

3.5 Set the Rotary Axis Control page

Axis substitution is used to wrap a toolpath around a cylinder. The geometry can be either flat or already properly oriented
in 3D space (select the Unroll option if this is so).
Rotary diameter sets the size of the cylinder that the toolpath is rotating about. It is used mainly for toolpaths on cylinders.

Select the Rotary Axis Control page and change the Rotation type to Axis substitution, Substitute Y-Axis as
shown in Figure: 3.5.1.
Set the Rotary diameter to 69.0mm.
Make sure that the Rotation direction is CCW.
Enable Unroll.
Figure: 3.5.1

NOTE: The Unroll parameter unrolls geometry wrapped on a cylinder so it lies flat on a plane. Cutter
compensation and retract moves are then calculated relative to the flat geometry. When the toolpath posts,
the geometry wraps back onto the cylinder using the Axis substitution and Rotary Diameter parameters.
Select the OK button to exit the Contour parameters.

STEP 4: BACKPLOT THE TOOLPATH

Backplotting shows the path the tools take to cut the part. This display lets you spot errors in the program before you
machine the part. As you backplot toolpaths, Mastercam displays the current X, Y, and Z coordinates in the lower left
corner of the screen.

Make sure that only the second operation is selected in the list.
The Source is set to NCI as we are rotating the toolpath and not the geometry.
Group NCI output by Operation type (In this case, how we group the output does not matter as we only rotate
one operation).
Enable Copy source operations and ensure Disable posting in selected source operations is enabled as well.
Figure: 7.1.1

NOTE: Group NCI output by Operation type groups the transformed operations by the operation type. For
example, if you selected a pocket and a contour operation, all transformations of the pocket operation would
be executed together, as would all transformations of the contour operation (pocket, pocket, contour,
contour, etc.). In this case, how we group the output does not matter as we only rotate one operation.

NOTE: Copy source operations creates a duplicate operation directly on top of the source operation. This
operations allows you to quickly modify the transform toolpath if needed. The source operation should not be
posted as it is a duplicate operation.
