Attention Getter- Did you know that underage drinking can ruin the mind of young

teenagers, causing anxiety, aggressive behaviors and also leading them to likely
becoming addicted to alcohol?
Credibility: Hello, my name is Yem Prieng and Ive always been interested in
researching and informing others about how early drinking has its own affect on teens
who starts early drinking and how it will affect them in the future.
Audience Relevance: It is essential to inform our youth about the negative side of
alcoholism, and how alcoholism can either ruin their life or end their life.
Preview Points: Today I am going to be focusing on the effects alcohol will have on youth
and as they get into adulthood. First I will inform the audience about how and where in
the brain alcohol damages and effects on, based on an experiment from scientist.
Secondly, I will provide the short terms and long terms effect alcohol has on the human
body. I also provide the numbers of young adult who binge drink in the U.S, and from
other parts of the world. I will also discuss about how these young adults get their
alcohol from and where. Lastly, I will discuss how media and price of alcohol encourages
drinking.
Transition to Point 1: Start by focusing how alcohol damages the brain of youth and
effects on their behaviour
Point 1: Inform the audience of how alcohol damages the brain, and how that will affect
Subpoint 1: According to a research by NIAAA, underage binge-drinking disrupts the
developing brains and gene regulation in teenagers, this can increase the use of
alcohol in adulthood.
Subpoint 1: An experiment conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago College
of Medicine by observing 28-days-old rats. The rats were given alcohol to for two
days in a row, followed by two days off, and repeated the pattern for 13 days. Rats
who were exposed to alcohol consumption, during adolescence displayed changes
in their behavior that lasted into adulthood even after the adolescent binge
drinking has stopped.

Subpoint 1: Amygdala, an almond-structure in the brain. The amygdala gives you the
ability to feel certain emotions, and to perceive them from other
people. The researchers who had conducted the experiment on rats had found that
rats who were exposed to alcohols brain appeared to have a complex of DNA,
and histone proteins within the amygdala cell nuclei to be tightly wrapped.
Researchers also found an increase in levels of a protein called HDAC2, which
modifies histones in a way that causes DNA to be wound tighter around them.
Point 2: Numbers/percentage of underage drinking around the world and the reason
behind teen binge drinking
Subpoint 1: According to the 2013 NSDUH, approximately 5.4 million people, ages
12-20 engaged themselves in binge drinking, and about 1.4 million people, ages
12-20 engaged themselves in heavy drinking.
Subpoint 2: teenagers drink due to peer pressure. Some do it because they are
curious, just to see what it would feel like or if its fun. Some do it because of
social media/advertisement. According to a 2011 study, teens agreed that movies
and tv shows make alcohol seem like an OK thing to do.
Point 3: Risky behavior, long term and short term effects of binge drinking and heavy
drinking.
Subpoint 1: Did you know that about of youths are willing to ride with drivers who
had been drinking? In the last year, 378 youngsters in the age group surveyed
were killed as passengers of a drinking driver--202 deaths were a result of riding
with an underage drunk driver.
Subpoint 2: Short terms effects due to alcohol consumptions are depended on how
much alcohol was taken, and the physical condition of the individual. Some short
terms effect due to alcohol are slurred speech, drowsiness, vomiting, impaired
judgement, anemia, coma, and blackouts.
Subpoint 3: Long terms effects due to binge drinking and continued alcohol use in
large amounts are associated with many health problems, including
unintentional injuries such as car crash, falls, burns, or drowning. Intentional
injuries such as firearm injuries, sexual assault, domestic violence, increased
family problems, broken relationships, last but not least, alcohol poisoning, liver
disease, permanent damage to the brain, ulcers, gastritis, and cancer to the
mouth, or throat.

Transition to Conclusion: In summary, I hope this presentation will inform the negative
side of alcohol, and why it is never really a good thing for anyone. I hope that the
awareness of underage drinking will spread, and that it will teach our youth how to stay
safe, and be responsible with their actions.
Review Main Points: Weve discussed the effects alcohol has on the human brain, and
how underage drinking will likely lead to increase in alcohol consumption in their
future. weve explored statistics related to demographic issues, and weve looked at short
terms and long terms effects underage drinking, and continuous drinking have on our
body.
Conclusion: Next Steps or Call to Action: Whether if you pass on the information from
the presentation to a youth you know, or participate in helping youth who do have
habits of binge drinking, it is important that we start somewhere small. Starting
somewhere small is better than not doing anything to help change the issue at all. I
hope you will leave here today and assist me in informing youths on the huge effect that
alcoholism will have on their life, the short term and long term on their health due to
alcoholism.
