Composite
I

A composite material can be defined as a combination of a matrix and

a reinforcement, which when combined gives properties superior to the
properties of the individual components.

The matrix, normally a form of resin, keeps the reinforcement in the

desired orientation. It protects the reinforcement from chemical and environmental attack, and it bonds the reinforcement so that applied loads can
be effectively transferred.

In the case of a composite, the reinforcement is the fibers and is used to fortify
the matrix in terms of strength and stiffness.

The reinforcement fibers can be cut, aligned, placed in different ways to affect
the properties of the resulting composite.

In composite material generally matrix is isotropic material and fiber is

anisotropic materail. Combination of these two makes composite anisotropic.

Effect on Youngs modulus

I

A U-shaped dependency of the Youngs modulus of composites on the

inclined angle of fiber is found.

Influence of Manufacturing
I

The tensile strength will be affected by the resin content. This may be the
cause of the difference in resin content during the curing process even though
the composite laminate was prepared using the same ratio of fiber.

Summary
I

As the angle of fiber orientation with the loading direction increases, the
load required to fracture the composite reduces.

Fiber angle affects the fracture of composite as it can be seen that crack
always follows the easiest path, which is the interface. So, most of the time
crack travels parallel to the fiber. As the path of crack is known to us, so
we can make some arrangement to arrest it.

Distributing the fibers in anisotropic manner increases the impact strength

of the material.

Composites made with different manufacturing method having same fiber

orientation will have different strength and stiffness.
