Road traffic accidents constituted a menace in modern times. Road accidents are
undoubtedly the most frequent and, overall, the cause of the most damage. Road
accident do not simply happen, these road accident are caused. According to
Odugbemi, O. O. (2010), accident is defined as anything which happens by chance
anything occurring unexpectedly and undersigned. Road traffic accident occurs
when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or
other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or utility pole. Road traffic accident
would rarely give warning, although reckless drivers should anticipate the
consequences

carelessness or negligence should be avoided at all cost by road users. Road traffic
accident is therefore an unexpected phenomenon that occurs as a result of the
operation of vehicles including bicycles and handcarts on the public highways and
roads.
The reasons for this are the extremely dense road traffic and the relatively great
freedom of movement given to drivers. Based on Sheriff, M. A. (2009), accidents
involving heavy goods vehicles especially those involving coaches and lorries with
trailers which occur all too frequently despite calls for responsible behavior, for
respect of the loading regulations and the highway code, as well as the obligation
for drivers to adapt speed, which affects stopping distances, to the traffic and
weather conditions. The many adverse consequences of road accidents is causing a
lot of injuries, might cause loss of life as well as economic losses in all of its
ramifications.
The prevention of road accidents is also extremely important and will be ensured by
strict laws, by technical and police controls, ongoing training for drivers especially
those involved in the transport of dangerous substances and, if need be, by legal
and administrative penalties for those responsible.
2.0 CAUSES OF ROAD TRAFFIC
Road traffic accident can be caused by a single factor or a combination of these
factors. Most safety studies come to the conclusion that vehicle operator or driver
factors are the main cause of accidents. The causes of road traffic accidents depend
on a list of factors which can be broadly divided into three which is vehicle operator
or driver factors, vehicle factors and road pavement factors.

2.1 Driver Factors

One of the driver related issues is the driver is driving while distracted. There are
many types of distractions that can lead to impaired driving, but recently there has
been a marked increase around the world in the use of mobile phones by drivers
that is becoming a growing concern for road safety. The distraction caused by
mobile phones can impair driving performance in a number of ways such as making
the driver to take a longer reaction times for braking which will caused the braking
reaction time to be longer.
2.2 Vehicle Factors
The vehicle itself is a key factor when analyzing the remote causes of a traffic
accident and it is incorporated with gadgets like, the horn, side mirrors, wipers,
braking system, headlights and break-lights so as to avoid road accident. Even the
maintenance of a vehicle should be preserved. Acquiring a well designed vehicle
and putting it onto road use is not enough to prevent the vehicle from causing road
traffic accident. Actually not performing routine maintenance and checks on the
vehicle can lead to deterioration of the vehicle sub-systems and thus expose the
vehicle to causing road traffic accident as a well maintained vehicle is less likely to
be involved in accidents. For example, if the brakes and tires are good and the
suspension well-adjusted, the vehicle is more controllable in an emergency and
thus, better equipped to avoid accidents.
2.3 Road pavement condition factors
Highways are arguably one of the factors of road accidents. Highway is considered
as an essential facility that led to both economic success and quality of life.
However, with the rapid grow of population and traffic volume, the rapid wear off of
the highway pavement is promised such as bad road pavement causing road
accidents. Drivers tend to slow down when driving on pavement distressed area in
order to avoid accident however, these will still lead to traffic congestion.

3.0 PREVENTION OF ROAD TRAFFIC

To prevent such driver factors, total prohibiting the use of mobile phones while
driving of law should be enacted. Actions that can be taken to address this ill
tradition by enacting, adopting and fully enforcing legislative measures prohibiting
the use of mobile phones while driving. Launching regular public awareness
campaigns to address this problem with a view of presenting before the general
public the grave dangers of driving and using the mobile phone. There should be
regularly collection of data on road traffic accidents as a result of distracted driving
while using the mobile phone to better understand the nature of this problem and to
holistically address it.
While for preventing any vehicle factors, the driver should do a proper vehicular
morning parades. Vehicle drivers should adequately ensure checking every part in
the vehicles to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition before putting the
vehicle into use. Before driving a vehicle for the first time every day, adequate
efforts should be made to check the radiator water level, brake hydraulic fluids and
that of clutch for manual vehicles, level of oil in engine, fan blades, engine belts and
tyre gauge for every morning while the vehicle is put on and allowed to run idle for
a few minutes.
Lastly, for road pavement factors, a routine maintenance and rehabilitation of road
pavements should be done frequently. Bad road pavement conditions are one of the
principal causes of road accidents. These roads are poorly constructed and rarely
managed or rehabilitated. When these roads are not maintained and rehabilitated,
which leads to deterioration. This deterioration often begins with the origin of cracks
and potholes either at the sides of the road pavements or along the drive way.
Therefore a remote way of ensuring accident reduction is for the government, which
is charged with the responsibility for good maintenance to draw up and implement
to the later on regular basis, budgets that match the demands of the road network
and its infrastructure.
