Road traffic accidents constituted a menace in modern times. Road accidents are
undoubtedly the most frequent and, overall, the cause of the most damage. Road
accident do not simply happen, these road accident are caused. According to
Odugbemi, O. O. (2010), accident is defined as anything which happens by chance
anything occurring unexpectedly and undersigned. Road traffic accident occurs
when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or
other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or utility pole. Road traffic accident
would rarely give warning, although reckless drivers should anticipate the
consequences

recklessness,
carelessness or negligence should be avoided at all cost by road users. Road traffic
accident is therefore an unexpected phenomenon that occurs as a result of the
operation of vehicles including bicycles and handcarts on the public highways and
roads.
The reasons for this are the extremely dense road traffic and the relatively great
freedom of movement given to drivers. Based on Sheriff, M. A. (2009), accidents
involving heavy goods vehicles especially those involving coaches and lorries with
trailers which occur all too frequently despite calls for responsible behavior, for
respect of the loading regulations and the highway code, as well as the obligation
for drivers to adapt speed, which affects stopping distances, to the traffic and
weather conditions. The many adverse consequences of road accidents is causing a
lot of injuries, might cause loss of life as well as economic losses in all of its
ramifications.
The prevention of road accidents is also extremely important and will be ensured by
strict laws, by technical and police controls, ongoing training for drivers especially
those involved in the transport of dangerous substances and, if need be, by legal
and administrative penalties for those responsible.
2.0 CAUSES OF ROAD TRAFFIC
Road traffic accident can be caused by a single factor or a combination of these
factors. Most safety studies come to the conclusion that vehicle operator or driver
factors are the main cause of accidents. The causes of road traffic accidents depend
on a list of factors which can be broadly divided into three which is vehicle operator
or driver factors, vehicle factors and road pavement factors.
