Every Companionship Can Baptize!

The Spain Barcelona Mission has had an extraordinary couple of weeks. This week
we were blessed with even more baptisms than last week when we had the amazing
number of 20. Because of your hard work, your dedication, your faith, your
obedience and your missionary skills, the Lord blessed us with---- 21 baptisms this
week!! We have never seen back-to-back weeks with this many baptisms since we
have been serving in this calling. Over the last 3 weeks 50 people have been
baptized in El Faro, enough to form a medium-sized branch. We express our gratitude
to our Heavenly Father for His goodness in blessing us with the privilege of bringing so
many of His children into the waters of baptism and thus giving them a chance to
return to His presence. The recent visits of Elder Dykes, Elder Zwick, Elder Kearon and
President Nelson have inspired, lifted, motivated and fanned the flames of missionary
fire in every one of us. In addition, the increased use of Family History in this mission
surely has resulted in those who have crossed the veil helping us find those of their
descendants who will do their work so that their ordinances can be done for them. I
commend all missionaries in El Faro for lengthening their stride and working diligently
to hasten the work. I am so proud of you and deeply grateful for the privilege of
serving with you. Now, Elders and Hermanas, it is our responsibility to be ESCALATOR
missionaries instead of ELEVATOR missionaries. We must sustain our efforts and look to
the day when every single companionship in El Faro knows and has the faith to find
those whom the Lord has prepared for us to find.
It is likely that there are a few small number of companionships who claim they are
in a hard area, or are having challenges with their companion, or have self-doubts
about their ability to be productive as baptizing missionaries in the Spain Barcelona
Mission. Let me dispel that mythevery single companionship in this mission has the
capacity to find and baptizeevery one! I know every single one of you and know of
your spiritual strength, your testimony, and your faith. I learned wonderful things about
you during the interviews and completed them having greater trust, greater love, and
greater expectations than ever before because of the incredible spiritual power and
ability of our missionaries. I also understand the power from on high to which you
have accessliterally being worthy to call upon the powers of heaven to help. To be
able to find prepared souls to whom we can teach repentance and baptize

converts, we must truly believe that we can be successful. That is called having the
FAITH TO FIND. Self-doubt, discouragement, poor self- image, insecurity, fear and
laziness can all threaten this faith. Those are all tools of the adversary. Nothing
frightens the adversary more than a disciplined, obedient, righteous missionary who
truly understands his/her missionary purpose. Such missionaries cant be discouraged
long term and are ultimately successful in virtually every area in which they serve. The
secret is a powerful belief that you CAN find and WILL find. Another secret is sustained
effective effort every single day.
Let me conclude by sharing a simple poem by Edwin Vance Cook. It is one of the
secrets of productive, successful missionaries:
O, one might reach heroic heights
By one strong burst of power.
He might endure the whitest lights
Of Heaven for an hour.
But harder is the daily drag,
To smile at trials which fret and fag.
And not to murmurnor to lag.
The test of greatness is the way
One meets the eternal Everyday
My prayer is that through this kind of powerful faith and the sustained effort of
every day, every companionship can and will see themselves as successful, powerful
instruments in the hand of the Lord to accomplish this great task. Congratulations
Elders and Hermanas in other spectacular week.
Todo mi amor,
Presidente Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton

Compassion vs Indifference

Compassion is investing whatever is necessary to heal the hurts of others. It is a genuine concern for
someone besides yourself.
Certainly, the Savior is the perfect example of one who exemplifies the character trait of Compassion. He
continually went about doing good--healing the sick, helping the sinner, lifting and strengthening all he came
in contact with. In Mosiah 15:9 Isaiah speaks of Christ saying, "Having ascended into heaven, having the
bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men." Christ continually showed love
and compassion to all.
People who are compassionate build strong relationships with others. They invest time by loving, caring and
listening with an open mind and heart. They seek to understand another's struggles from his or her viewpoint.
We have many examples of missionaries who show compassion:
"One of the hardest nights of my mission was the night one of our amazing investigators named Maria (an
African Refugee with the Red Cross) was forced to drop us. She had a baptismal date too, along with two
other African women she was living with, who both were equally amazing also. The reason they had to drop us
was because the Red Cross shelter they were living at forced them to get rid of the Book of Mormon since it
was a Catholic facility. Elder_______ showed true compassion, and a little gentleness too, by lovingly talking
with her (my Spanish wasnt that good yet) and testifying of the gospel and blessings of the Book of Mormon.
When we found that there was nothing else we could do for her, we gave her a priesthood blessing of health
(tears were shed) on that lonely park bench that night, and we said goodbye to her with their three Book of
Mormons in hand. Where most would have been put off or disappointed, Elder _______showed true
compassion, showing love to this daughter of God, even if she was choosing something we didnt want for
her.
"One day in Catarroja we were teaching a woman named Tania. We found Tania searching through the
trash to find things to sell. Tania is from Romania, she lives here with her husband and are homeless. It was a
very difficult situation to teach her because she didnt speak or understand Spanish. We taught Tania through
Google translate even though it was almost impossible. The love and patience that Elder___showed her really
changed her life. She gained hope and faith to push forward because she knew that someone cared about
her. Tania was never baptized because of the difficulties of her situation, but there is a notable difference in her
countenance for the compassion Elder____demonstrated.
"Hermana _______is one of the people I most admire. I was going through a rough time when I had my first
intercambio with her. She devoted her attention to me and listened while I talked about my worries. She knew
exactly what to say to make me feel better, but they werent just empty words. She showed me the rest of the
intercambio that she meant every compliment sincerely, that she loved me and cared about me. Being with

her lifted my heart enough to get through a hard time and not feel so alone. She is an expert at making people
feel important."
"I was having a hard time with the language and the mission was feeling overwhelming and I wasnt sure
how to go about learning and understanding more of what the people were saying. Elder______ took some
time to stop and ask me how everything was going and if I needed anything. He gave me some advice and
explained what I should do and how to deal with feeling overwhelmed and inspired me to keep trying. I cant
explain it but he just said the things that I needed to hear in that moment.
"One day we were visiting a less active/ part member family. The family had been coming back to church
recently and we were asking to baptize the father. He already knew everything. He had met with missionaries
before, but had never accepted the invitations to be baptized. We had explained having the authority
restored and we were planning to explain the importance of baptism. In the lesson we explained how baptism
is how we access the Atonement. Elder ____picked up on how the investigator was feeling. He shared a
personal experience and a powerful testimony of the peace, love, and forgiveness that we can get from our
Savior. He really put himself out there sharing the story, and it worked. They both started to cry. That was the first
time we felt a strong connection with him. The first time we knew he had a deep profound spiritual
experience.
"I remember seeing her with every single missionary in our piso, at one point or another, helping console or
comfort them. She has a gift for being able to tell who needs her help and when, and she is unafraid and
selfless enough to make sure they know that SHE will always be there to help them, and wise and spiritual
enough to let them know that the SAVIOR is always there to help them. She is just always full of love and charity
and pure, non-judgmental compassion for everyone. She is a truly great, consecrated, disciple of Christ, in the
mission.
"We have been working with our progressing investigator, Vivian. Vivian is incredibly kind and sweet-spirited,
but her progression has been slow, because she is also very shy. But this week, she has finally told us that she
wants to be baptized! I know that one of the reasons that Vivians rate of conversion increased is because of
how loved Hermana______ made her feel. I have been able to watch her come unto the Savior, and realize
and feel his perfect love, after realizing that Hermana_____ cared more about her conversion and progression
than she understood. More than anything I have learned from Hermana ___the importance of loving the
people, and sincerely seeing them as children of God. She cares about every single member, investigator, less
active, and street contact, and it is evident that she has a sincere and genuine desire to help them come unto
Christ. Her compassion for the people she works with has been a great example to me.
President Dayton and I are continually inspired by your love and compassion for the people in Spain. We
feel grateful for the good you are doing as you share the gospel, lift and inspire others. We will continue to pray
for you as you continue to bring others to the Savior.
