PROCEDURE

PRESSURE CONTROL
EXPERIMENTATION
perform the Operative Unit 10;
carry out the connections as in Fig.4.2.1;
disconnect for a moment the cable that connects jack 4 (Module 33
Unit 6) to jack 7 (Module 33 Unit 8);
insert a terminal of the digital voltmeter, set to direct current, in jack 1
Uref (SET POINT) and the other one in ground jack;
adjust the SET POINT voltage to 4V (0.8bar);
move the terminal of the digital voltmeter in jack 3 of the pressure
sensor (Module 33D);
close the DRAIN VALVE;
turn the knob Kp of the PROPORTIONAL CONTROLLER to 75% and the
knob Ki of the INTEGRAL CONTROLLER to 25%;
restore the connection between jack 4 (Module 33 Unit 6) and jack 7
(Module 33 Unit 8): the pump starts and operates until when it reaches
the SET-POINT value set with the Uref;
adjust the DRAIN VALVE so to make the pressure decrease in the tank:
the pump starts again to keep constant the pressure value in the tank;
observe what happens: after a series of oscillations the systems
establishes itself;
repeat the previous operations for the different values of Ki, Kp, Uref
and DRAIN VALVE so to determine the best balance conditions of the
system.

DISCUSSION

The experiment on Pressure Control was performed. At first, the

Position Sensors characteristic was investigated. It was calibrated and
connections as described in the procedure were carried out. The set point
was adjusted to 4V corresponding to 0.8 bar. Drain valve was closed.
Multimeter was then transferred to the jack of the pressure sensor. The

knob of the proportional controller was turned to 75% while the knob of
the integral controller was turned to 25%.
The pump was operated until it reached the set point value set with
the Uref. The pressure in the tank was decreased by adjusting the drain
valve. Then, the pump was operated again keeping a constant pressure
in the tank. After a series of oscillations the systems establishes itself, it
was observed. Operations were repeated to determine the best balance
conditions of the system.

Voltage values were gathered corresponding to the pressure by

adjusting the controller to the respective value. It was observed that
voltage is a function of the pressure. The data was then graphed showing
a continuous rise up of the voltage as the pressure increases.

CONCLUSION

After conducting this experiment, I therefore conclude that it is

essential to calibrate the position sensor first before using to ensure the
accuracy of the equipment, quantifying and controlling errors or uncertainties within
measurement processes to an acceptable level. In this experiment, the
characteristics of the pressure sensor were shown. In terms of the operation of the
pressure control, I conclude that voltage is a function of the pressure. As the
pressure increases, the value of the voltage also does.
On the other hand, the operation of a closed loop control system
was determined. I conclude that the closed loop proportional-integral
pressure control is the most common control algorithm used in industrial
control. It has a wide range of operating conditions and partly to their
functional simplicity, which allows to operate them in a simple,
straightforward manner. Its basic idea is to read a sensor, then compute
