commissioned emissaries of the Master, we must learn that while we cannot command
things, we can command ourselves by keeping the commandments of God.
Righteousness means being upright, moral, obedient and virtuous. It is something we
have to work on every single day. Elder M Russell Ballard has stated that he sees armor
not as a solid fitted piece of metal, molded to fit the body, but more like chain mail.
Chain mail consists of hundreds of tiny pieces of metal fastened together to allow
greater movement and flexibility without losing protection. His point is that there is not
usually one great and grand thing we can do to arm ourselves spiritually. True spiritual
power lies in numerous smaller acts woven together in a fabric of spiritual fortification
that protects and shields us from evil. A former member of the First Presidency, Elder
Nathan L Tanner, has stated that it is important that we make up our mind early in life
what we will do and not do. Long before the moment of temptation comes, we should
have determined that we will resist that temptation.
Elder Ballard has suggested some ways we may protect ourselves by eliminating any
chinks or gaps in our armor. First, is the protective power of prayer. Prayer must be
consistent, thoughtful, associated with deep contemplation, and sincere. D&C 10:5
admonishes us to Pray always that you may come off conqueror, yea that you may
conquer Satan. Second, use the protective power of the scriptures. In 1 Nephi 15:24
we are counselled that, Whoso would hearken unto the word of God and would hold
fast unto it, they would never perish. What a marvelous promise. Third, we need to
watch ourselves. We read in Mosiah 4:30 that, If ye do not watch yourselves, and
your thoughts and your words and your deeds, and observe the commandments of
God..ye must perish. It is important that you know yourself, know your weaknesses,
be particularly careful to stay away from temptation in areas where you know you are
vulnerable. Fourth, dont waste the days of our probation. In 2 Nephi 9:27 we read,
Wo unto him that has the law giventhat wasteth the days of his probation. We
need to use our time wisely, especially in the mission field because it is not our timeit is
His. We need to be sure we keep our lives in balance. We need to spend large
amounts of time making the world a better place and filling the measure of our
creation.
Beloved missionaries of this great mission, I admonish you to put on the breastplate of
righteousness and make sure that your conduct is consistent with a disciple of Christ,
that your thoughts are pure, that you are exactly obedient, that you will do the 4 things
above suggested by Elder Ballard, and that you will let virtue garnish your thoughts
unceasingly. The blessing of putting on the breastplate of righteousness is that you will
be completely protected from the only being alive intent on your destruction. I pray
every day for your happiness and your success in the mission. May the Lord bless you to
this end.
Protegido por la armadura de rectitud,

Virtue vs Vice
Virtue is a pattern of thought and behavior based on high moral standards. It
originates in your inner most thoughts and desires. Virtue begins in the heart and in the
mind. Virtue encompasses chastity and moral purity.
Virtue is prerequisite to receiving the spirits guidance. The Holy Ghost does not dwell
in unclean tabernacles. Therefore virtuous women and men possess a quiet dignity and
inner strength because they are guided by the Holy Ghost. In Doctrine and Covenants
we read, "Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax
strong in the presence of god."
One of our missionaries recently shared this experience about his companion, He is
always working to purify his thoughts, memorizing hymns and working to be spiritually
clean. I have also seen how virtuous he is through his desire to keep his living quarter
clean. It helps me feel his love because of how he desires to keep our piso clean. Also
with the way he teaches. He always tries to share the scriptures that he studies. He is a
very virtuous Elder in the way that he lives."
When we allow virtue to "garnish our thoughts unceasingly" we cultivate virtuous traits.
H. Burton Howard said, "Virtuous traits form the foundation of a Christian life and are the
outward manifestation of the inner man. The spelling in English of many individual virtues
concludes with the letters ity; integrity, humility, charity, spirituality, accountability, civility,
fidelity, and the list goes on and on. Relying on literary license, I refer to the virtues
ending in ity as the "ity" virtues. "Ity" is a suffix that means quality, state, or degree of
being. It is difficult for a person to display virtuous traits if he or she lacks integrity. Without
integrity, honesty is often forgotten. If integrity is absent, civility is impaired. If integrity is
not important, spirituality is difficult to maintain.
I often thinking of the covenants we make with God in our Holy Temples. How important
it is for us to live with integrity in following all we have promised God. Moses counseled
the children of Israel, "If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his
soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that
proceedeth out of his mouth." Numbers 30:2.
A missionary recently shared this about his companion, One time we forgot to meet
with a member before an appointment. That of course was a big no no on our part.
Instead of making an excuse Elder_____ apologized in the first moment possible to that
member. He openly admits faults and diligently works to overcome them. Not once
have I heard him make an excuse for a mistake hes made.
The Savior was the perfect example of living a life of virtue. Because of this, people
sought to touch him: "For there went virtue out of him, and healed them all." Luke 6:19.
Our Heavenly Father wants each of us to have this same power of virtue and use it to
benefit others. As missionaries we can be virtuous by being obedient to God's
commandments and the mission rules, viewing uplifting material and being modest in
our dress. We can think uplifting thoughts, ponder the scriptures, look for the good in
others, and pray for the strength to resist temptation. Most importantly, we can live
worthy of a temple recommend and make sure our desires are in harmony with our
Heavenly Father's desires.
I know as we allow virtue to garnish our thoughts and as we cultivate virtuous traits in
our personal life, we will be strengthened, more confident and have an increase in faith.
We will then be able to bless and strengthen others because of our example.
Much love as you increase in virtue,
Hermana Dayton
