The Breastplate of Righteousness

After the Great Council in Heaven, the Plan put forth by our Savior was accepted
and Satans plan was rejected. Because of Satans ego, his pride, his inherent greed,
his evil heart and the humiliating defeat he had just suffered, he vowed to retaliate
against our Heavenly Father and the best way he could get his vengeance was to
wrest Gods children away from the path that would lead them back to their
heavenly home. If he could do that, those precious children who had fallen away
would be HIS and his power would be further increased. Thus there has been a great
battle being waged on the face of this earth in which the forces of good are
contending with the forces of evil for the souls of men. The 6th chapter of Ephesians
describes it best saying, For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against
spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12).
Every single missionary in the Spain Barcelona Mission is his intended victim. He
would love to destroy you spiritually. Gratefully, our Father in Heaven has anticipated
his every move, his every strategy, and has prepared ways for us to be protected
against his attacks. The great gift that God has given us is a protective armor that
makes Satans thrusts, stab attempts and lethal offensive maneuvers completely
ineffectivehe will always fail as long as we put on the whole armor of God. Again in
Ephesians 6:11-17, we read, Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to
stand against the wiles of the devil..wherefore take unto you the whole armour
of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to
stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the
breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of
peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all
the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the word of God. I would like to briefly write about one of these
protective parts of the armor of Godthe breastplate of righteousness!

The metaphor of the breastplate of righteousness is a valuable one. The

breastplate protects our heart which typifies our conduct. In Proverbs 23:7, we
read, As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. As disciples of Christ and

commissioned emissaries of the Master, we must learn that while we cannot command
things, we can command ourselves by keeping the commandments of God.
Righteousness means being upright, moral, obedient and virtuous. It is something we
have to work on every single day. Elder M Russell Ballard has stated that he sees armor
not as a solid fitted piece of metal, molded to fit the body, but more like chain mail.
Chain mail consists of hundreds of tiny pieces of metal fastened together to allow
greater movement and flexibility without losing protection. His point is that there is not
usually one great and grand thing we can do to arm ourselves spiritually. True spiritual
power lies in numerous smaller acts woven together in a fabric of spiritual fortification
that protects and shields us from evil. A former member of the First Presidency, Elder
Nathan L Tanner, has stated that it is important that we make up our mind early in life
what we will do and not do. Long before the moment of temptation comes, we should
have determined that we will resist that temptation.
Elder Ballard has suggested some ways we may protect ourselves by eliminating any
chinks or gaps in our armor. First, is the protective power of prayer. Prayer must be
consistent, thoughtful, associated with deep contemplation, and sincere. D&C 10:5
admonishes us to Pray always that you may come off conqueror, yea that you may
conquer Satan. Second, use the protective power of the scriptures. In 1 Nephi 15:24
we are counselled that, Whoso would hearken unto the word of God and would hold
fast unto it, they would never perish. What a marvelous promise. Third, we need to
watch ourselves. We read in Mosiah 4:30 that, If ye do not watch yourselves, and
your thoughts and your words and your deeds, and observe the commandments of
God..ye must perish. It is important that you know yourself, know your weaknesses,
be particularly careful to stay away from temptation in areas where you know you are
vulnerable. Fourth, dont waste the days of our probation. In 2 Nephi 9:27 we read,
Wo unto him that has the law giventhat wasteth the days of his probation. We
need to use our time wisely, especially in the mission field because it is not our timeit is
His. We need to be sure we keep our lives in balance. We need to spend large
amounts of time making the world a better place and filling the measure of our
creation.
Beloved missionaries of this great mission, I admonish you to put on the breastplate of
righteousness and make sure that your conduct is consistent with a disciple of Christ,
that your thoughts are pure, that you are exactly obedient, that you will do the 4 things
above suggested by Elder Ballard, and that you will let virtue garnish your thoughts
unceasingly. The blessing of putting on the breastplate of righteousness is that you will
be completely protected from the only being alive intent on your destruction. I pray
every day for your happiness and your success in the mission. May the Lord bless you to
this end.
Protegido por la armadura de rectitud,
Presidente Merril T Dayton

Virtue vs Vice
Virtue is a pattern of thought and behavior based on high moral standards. It
originates in your inner most thoughts and desires. Virtue begins in the heart and in the
mind. Virtue encompasses chastity and moral purity.
Virtue is prerequisite to receiving the spirits guidance. The Holy Ghost does not dwell
in unclean tabernacles. Therefore virtuous women and men possess a quiet dignity and
inner strength because they are guided by the Holy Ghost. In Doctrine and Covenants
we read, "Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax
strong in the presence of god."
One of our missionaries recently shared this experience about his companion, He is
always working to purify his thoughts, memorizing hymns and working to be spiritually
clean. I have also seen how virtuous he is through his desire to keep his living quarter
clean. It helps me feel his love because of how he desires to keep our piso clean. Also
with the way he teaches. He always tries to share the scriptures that he studies. He is a
very virtuous Elder in the way that he lives."
When we allow virtue to "garnish our thoughts unceasingly" we cultivate virtuous traits.
H. Burton Howard said, "Virtuous traits form the foundation of a Christian life and are the
outward manifestation of the inner man. The spelling in English of many individual virtues
concludes with the letters ity; integrity, humility, charity, spirituality, accountability, civility,
fidelity, and the list goes on and on. Relying on literary license, I refer to the virtues
ending in ity as the "ity" virtues. "Ity" is a suffix that means quality, state, or degree of
being. It is difficult for a person to display virtuous traits if he or she lacks integrity. Without
integrity, honesty is often forgotten. If integrity is absent, civility is impaired. If integrity is
not important, spirituality is difficult to maintain.
I often thinking of the covenants we make with God in our Holy Temples. How important
it is for us to live with integrity in following all we have promised God. Moses counseled

the children of Israel, "If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his
soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that
proceedeth out of his mouth." Numbers 30:2.
A missionary recently shared this about his companion, One time we forgot to meet
with a member before an appointment. That of course was a big no no on our part.
Instead of making an excuse Elder_____ apologized in the first moment possible to that
member. He openly admits faults and diligently works to overcome them. Not once
have I heard him make an excuse for a mistake hes made.
The Savior was the perfect example of living a life of virtue. Because of this, people
sought to touch him: "For there went virtue out of him, and healed them all." Luke 6:19.
Our Heavenly Father wants each of us to have this same power of virtue and use it to
benefit others. As missionaries we can be virtuous by being obedient to God's
commandments and the mission rules, viewing uplifting material and being modest in
our dress. We can think uplifting thoughts, ponder the scriptures, look for the good in
others, and pray for the strength to resist temptation. Most importantly, we can live
worthy of a temple recommend and make sure our desires are in harmony with our
Heavenly Father's desires.
I know as we allow virtue to garnish our thoughts and as we cultivate virtuous traits in
our personal life, we will be strengthened, more confident and have an increase in faith.
We will then be able to bless and strengthen others because of our example.
Much love as you increase in virtue,
Hermana Dayton

The Miracle of Baptism

The highlight of our week was
meeting with our investigator
Jennifer. She is nine years old
and preparing to be baptized
on the 10th. Her dad is not a
member and her mom is less
active. Each week I grow to
love this family more. Jennifer
loves reading the Book of
Mormon and she is so excited
for her baptism. When we first
invited her to be baptized she
was
a
little
shy
and
uncomfortable praying, but
now she loves it. She even
wants to offer the prayer at her
own baptism! It really is a
sweet experience to see her
grow in her knowledge of the
gospel, but it especially sweet
to see her mom reactivating as
a result of it. During our last visit
her mom shared with us a
special experience she had
where
her
prayers
were
answered
immediately.
It
strengthened her testimony of
Heavenly Fathers love, and
reminded her that He is always
there. We just have to seek

Him. She has been feeling the

spirit so much, and she told us
that she hopes she doesnt lose
it. We explained to her that if
she is diligent in the little things
(reading the scriptures, prayer,
church attendance), that she
can have that feeling always!
We are so excited for this
baptism and I know that
Jennifers example will bless
her family so much. It already
has.

Milagro: there is a member of

the stake presidency here in
the Vitoria Stake named
Hermano Hidalgo who smoked
a lot before he was baptized
many years ago. We thought it
would be appropriate to take
advantage of his visit to our
ward this past Sunday and
asked him if he would like to
help us with a cita con Jaime.
Let me just tell you that this was
one of the most edifying
lessons I have ever been a part
of. It was not us teaching, it
wasn't even Hermano Hidalgo

teaching, it was 100% of the

spirit. Jaime spilled his heart,
Hermano Hidalgo bore a
powerful testimony, and it will
forever be a lesson that I will
never forget. Since then, Jaime
has had renewed energy to
continue
avoiding
the
temptation of smoking. It's the
most difficult thing he's ever
done, but he is putting Christ
first. Literally. He keeps a
picture of Christ that we gave
him in his coat pocket where
he used to keep his cigarettes
and pats his pocket to remind
him that Christ is with him. I look
up to him, President. Is it even
possible to look up to someone
that you've only known for less
than a month? I guess so. This
man has taught me the power
of change and reliance on
Jesus Christ. His baptism will be
one
to
remember
on
December 10th.
