SWOT Analysis

A SWOT is an analysis of the Strengths,

Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats to an
organization or entity. In this case, the entity is
educational technology at our school. Please
keep in mind that Strengths and Weaknesses
are internal--things which we control within our
program. Opportunities and Threats are
external or outside of our control.

Strengths: Resources and capabilities that can be used for developing a competitive
advantage.

Guiding Questions:
What are the departments advantages?

-Many teachers may be resistant to change because they feel it will mean more work for them
or they simply do not want to change their way of doing things.
-The tablets that we currently have on campus only allow for up to 5 users. Once a student logs
on to a tablet, he/she must use the same tablet all year long (need tablets without this limitation)
-We need more tablets. Currently each grade level has to share a cart with 23 tablets on it.
-We need more effective training for teachers on technology.
-Students will also need training on using technology effectively.
-Time limitations make collaboration difficult.
-Aligning information and communication technology skills with pedagogical practices

environment; Or new external opportunities for profit and/or growth.

-We have the opportunity to rethink how schools work and delve into a deeper learning experience.
-We can expand our eBook collection.

-We can create a more interactive learning environment.

-With the expansion of technology in the classroom, we could progress to using smart boards and push to
become a 1:1 campus.

Threats: External force that could inhibit a competitive advantage; any unfavorable
situation in the external environment that is potentially damaging.

Guiding Questions:
What obstacles do you face?

Are the required specifications for your
job/services changing?
Is changing technology threatening your
position?
Do you have financial problems?
Could any of your weaknesses seriously threaten your department?

Please enter what you find to be the Threats to educational technology at our school.
-Budget/Finances (our district is very large so implementing more technology will most likely take a while).
-Cyber bullying (as a campus that struggles with bullying, I have a fear that implementing more
technology could open up a new arena for bullying).
-Standardized testing paper and pencil format can make it difficult to implement technology as students
need to be exposed to the format of the STAAR test. (pressure for STAAR testing can lead to the drill and
kill type teaching)
