Marine Coatings /
Asia Pacific Report

his months issue of Coatings World takes a look at two related topics
Marine Coatings and the Asia Pacific Coatings Market.

Marine Coatings Market

The market for marine coatings is largely driven by the Asia Pacific region
due in part to the emergence of China as a major player in the shipbuilding industry. Growth in the shipbuilding industry in India, Vietnam and
the Philippines is also expected to provide large opportunities for marine
coatings manufacturers. Recently adopted environmental legislation in this
region is sure to have a huge impact on marine coatings. Marine coatings manufacturers interviewed by Coatings World have said that recently
enacted environmental regulations such as biocidal production regulations have significantly affected the market. Manufacturers will have to
rise to the challenge to develop products that both meet increasingly stringent regulations and offer outstanding performance in some of the harshest
environments.

Asia Pacific Report

According to market research firm IRL, the total market for paints and
coatings in Asia Pacific is forecast to increase to 29.2 million tons by 2018.
China is by far the largest national market for paints and coatings in
the Asia Pacific region, followed at some considerable distance by India
and Japan. The smallest markets are those of New Zealand and Singapore.
While medium-term growth is forecast to be low in the more developed
and mature markets such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan, the developing market of India is predicted to demonstrate growth of over 10
percent per annum over the next five years. India still offers significant
potential for paints and coatings market growth, as per capita consumption remains very low.
According to IRL, protective coatings have a particularly large share of
the market in China due to the fast growth of sectors such as civil engineering, marine engineering and container manufacturing. Marine coatings
have a high share in the coatings market in Singapore, reflecting that countrys importance as a regional hub for maritime transportation, and also in
South Korea, which remains a key shipbuilding nation.

Axalta Inaugurates Expanded

Resin Production Facility in Mexico

xalta Coating Systems inaugurated production at its expanded

resin manufacturing facility located at its Tlalnepantla campus outside
Mexico City. The investment to expand
infrastructure will enable the company to
support its customers with the latest coating technologies that are used in a wide
variety of the companys liquid coatings.
The additional polymer resins that can
now be produced in Mexico provide the
backbone of Axaltas traditional solventborne and latest generation waterborne
coatings. A key ingredient of all coating
layers, resins provide the chemical structure that help make Axalta coatings durable and able to withstand the effects of
weather and ultraviolet radiation.
Today we celebrate Axaltas continued commitment to Mexico and the story
of our companys growth here that began
64 years ago, explained Charlie Shaver,
Axalta chairman and CEO. The opening of this facility, which takes place as
Axalta celebrates its 150th anniversary,
reflects the extensive operations and technology expertise based in Mexico that we
were able to draw on to design and construct a production complex which joins
what is already a world-class production
facility and one of our largest operations
centers in the world. Our investment in
this facility will enable us to support our
customers with the latest coating technology and reflects our long-term confidence
in both the future of Mexico and our expectations for continued growth across
the region.
Mexico is home to some of the worlds
leading light and commercial vehicle
original equipment manufacturers that
rely on Axaltas Harmonized Coating
Technologies which include primerless
and 3-Wet coatings that can achieve full
layer performance without the need to
flash and bake between coats. The increased productivity results in a better
bottom line for customers while still producing an unparalleled finish on vehicles.

Development of the State of Mexico, Laura
Gonzalez; Charles W. Shaver, Axalta chairman
and CEO; Tatjana Heinrich, managing Partner
of the German-Mexican Chamber of Commerce
and Industry; Aurora Denisse Ugalde, president
of the Municipality of Tlalnepantla; Ana Lopez,
executive vice president and general director of
the American Chamber; Jorge Cossio, president
Axalta Latin America.

Axalta coatings are also used by a large

number of body shops that repair vehicles using the companys global refinish brands available in Mexico including
Cromax, Standox and Spies Hecker, local refinish brands such as Imlar and
Cromacryl, and Imron, Axaltas leading
commercial vehicle coating.
The science and innovation deployed in the construction and operation
of our new production center reflects the
strong technical capabilities of the resources of Axalta in Mexico while also
leveraging our global technical competencies to create such a high-tech facility, stated Jorge Cosso, president of
Axaltas Latin America region. We are
confident this expansion and technology
enhancement will enable us to continue
to deliver the high quality products our
customers require.
The new facility integrates the highest
standards in engineering and safety, relying on the latest technology to automate
virtually every step of the production process and improve operational efficiencies,
reduce waste and further reduce the environmental footprint from its operations.
The entire Tlalnepantla facility operates

under an Industria Limpia (Clean

Industry) designation in recognition of
its efforts to reduce the environmental
impact of coatings production. A combination of talent and effort provided
by entirely local resources made it possible to conceive and complete the entire
project in only 14 months on time and on
budget, the firm stated.
The State of Mexico plays a key role
in the economic development of the nation and we highly appreciate that global
companies like Axalta have consistently
placed their trust in the State to expand
its economic and industrial infrastructure, explained Laura Teresa Gonzalez
Hernandez, Undersecretary of Economic
Development of the Government of the
State of Mexico who attended the event.
The government works in a consistent and committed manner, in partnership with the private sector, to promote
progress towards a common goal: to
generate more and better jobs as well as
foster an environment that is conducive
to ease investments which will contribute
to a thriving present and a great future
for Mexicans.
Additional guests attending the
opening ceremony included Aurora
Denisse Ugalde Alegra, State of Mexico
Municipal president; Ana Lpez Mestre,
American Chamber of Commerce vice
president and general director; and
Tatjana Heinrich, the Mexican German
Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Associates Manager.

for both powder coatings and

decorative paints.
Located
in
Qionglai,
Chengdu, the new 55,000-square
meter decorative paints site observes the
companys highest sustainability and
safety standards. All products produced
will be waterborne and solvent-free, and
the facilitys manufacturing environment
will generate lower carbon emissions and
be more sustainable. Given its central
location, the site will enable extensive
savings in transportation costs and an
optimized logistics network that will reduce carbon emissions by eight kilotons
per year equivalent to carbon emissions
of 3,000 tons of standard coal.
Ruud Joosten, executive committee member responsible for Decorative
Paints at AkzoNobel, said: Chinas
rapid growth in urbanization has meant
an increase in demand for many of our
products and services in the region. This
new site enables us to respond to this
demand and have the expertise on the
ground locally to share our knowledge
with industry stakeholders. We are looking forward to supplying more essential
products to more customers in China
than ever before.
AkzoNobels Decorative Paints sales
have grown significantly in Western
China. In 2015, the sales volume in the
region constituted around one quarter
of its overall market revenue in China.
Contributing to the sales growth is the
increasing demand for its re-painting services, as well as its eco-friendly products
and product solutions to the regions real
estate development.
As the site becomes fully operational,
we will be able to provide greater value for
our customers in the region through our
enhanced geographical coverage and production capacity. Centered in Chengdu,
the site enables us to extend our reach to
southwestern and northwestern regions,
and to provide quality products that are
customized for the needs of local customers, in a timely, efficient way, said Dr. Lin
Liangqi, president of AkzoNobel China,
and managing director of Decorative
Paints, China and North Asia.
Zhaoxu Hui, mayor of Qionglai,
said: Western provinces are currently

experiencing urbanization at an unprecedented speed. With its specialties in color

and sustainability, AkzoNobel will bring
in great value to this journey helping us
to provide more colorful and livable urban space.
AkzoNobel now has four decorative
paints production plants in China. Its
other sites in Guangzhou, Shanghai and
Langfang cover the southern, eastern and
northern regions of the country, respectively. AkzoNobel employs around 7,500
people in China and generated 1.8 billion in locally driven revenues in 2015.

Sherwin-Williams Launches
Interactive Water &
Wastewater Coatings App
Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine
Coatings launched the Water &
Wastewater App designed to provide
users with protective coating recommendations for the following water and
wastewater operations: conventional
water treatment, membrane water/wastewater treatment, water storage, water
conveyance, sewer collection and wastewater treatment.
The app was developed to help engineers access accurate and up-to-date
coatings information via mobile technology. If a new product is introduced, or an
old product is no longer manufactured,
the Water & Wastewater App displays the
updated information.
From conventional treatment to membrane treatment, digesters to clarifiers,
the app provides coating solutions for
more than 35 functional areas across six
different water and wastewater facility
types. For example, in sewer collection,
the app suggests coatings for the following six areas: the lift/pump station, force
main sewer, gravity sewer manhole, air
release vault, sewer trunk line and junction splitter box.
The apps home screen allows the user
to select the type of functional area in
need of coating. Once the site has been
selected, labeled areas of the plant appear.
By clicking on a labeled area, the app will
populate specific coating recommendations for it.
The recommendation includes a primary coating system (primer, intermediate and top coat), dry film thickness for
each coat and total mils for the system.
Surface preparation tips and process descriptions are also included in the recommendation. By clicking on a product
name, the app pulls up a detailed product
data sheet.
Water and wastewater coatings
from Sherwin-Williams are formulated to return assets to service quickly,
said Kevin Morris, Sherwin-Williams
regional water and wastewater market segment director. The Water &
Wastewater App is an extension of that
fast-return-to-service focus, allowing

Market Reports

NAFTA Leads the Color Concentrate World

ccording to the latest research

from AMI Consulting, the
NAFTA market for thermoplastic concentrates continues to have strong
prospects for growth and market penetration. At the same time there are new
opportunities to profit from increased
customer service needs among major
brands. In recent years the market has
seen a period of sustained growth not
experienced since the 1990s with North
America increasingly a key center for innovation and global brand developments,
making it an ideal place to develop new
colors and property enhancing products.
For many years the concentrate industry in NAFTA tended to outperform the
overall polymer industry as plastics processors recognized the technical and business advantages of using concentrate over
compound and other systems. Although
in the future the delta between polymer
growth and concentrate market advance
will narrow the prospects are still very
good in value added areas such as custom
color and additive materials.
The opportunities in the marketplace
will have a major impact on company
strategy. The NAFTA market is seeing a
considerable volume of new investment
both from the traditional major players
but also new market entrants. This will
only emphasize the competitive nature of
the market where there have been clear
winners and losers in recent years with
some players cutting back their activities and closing plants while others have
sought wider or new markets to sustain
their business. What the research from
AMI highlights is the way in which a
number of new names in the industry are
coming to the fore in the color segment.
The largest market for concentrate
in NAFTA is still for additive types (especially mineral based products) which
accounts for 47 percent of demand. The
color segment is however the most important in value terms in a market which
now exceeds $3 billion in sales.

NAFTA continues to have a strong

export surplus in concentrate of well
over 50 million lbs. This is further testament to the strength and size of the concentrate industry in NAFTA. The surplus
is most significant in additive and color
varieties, but all product types show net
levels of exports.
AMI concludes that the market in
NAFTA will continue to grow albeit at
levels much lower than has historically
been the case because of much slower
growth in the traditional volume markets
for concentrate in polyethylene film and
blow moulding. Opportunities will arise
in more specialty sectors such as grass
yarn and high performance packaging
and in the growing use of recycled materials that will require additive packages
to modify performance.

U.S. Demand for Natural

Polymers to Exceed $5
Billion
U.S. demand for natural polymers is forecast to expand at a 4.3 percent annual

pace to $5.1 billion in 2020, reaching 1.9

billion pounds. Growth will be driven
by demand for natural ingredients in the
large food and beverage industry, which
will bolster use of cellulose ethers and
starch and fermentation polymers. Most
product types will benefit from strong
demand from the medical market, as
natural polymers are used extensively in
pharmaceuticals, wound care, and orthopedic injections. These and other trends
are presented in Natural Polymers, a new
study from The Freedonia Group.
Cellulose ethers are the largest product type of natural polymer, representing
a third of the market. Methyl cellulose will retain its market-leading spot
through the forecast period, but demand
for hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) will also be
significant. Methyl celluloses largest application is construction, where it used
in a variety of capacities, including plastering, flooring, grouting, mortaring, tile
adhesion, and stucco.

Market Reports

Starch and fermentation products will advance the most rapidly of all natural polymers through
2020, with polylactic acid (PLA)
accounting for much of the growth. As
capacity increased over the past several
years, PLA is one of the few natural polymers that has exhibited declining prices.
This has been a boon for the packaging
segment, which represents by far the leading outlet for PLA resins. According to
analyst Larry Catsonis, Hyaluronic acid
will also support starch and fermentation
products gains, as it continues to be used
to relieve joint pain in orthopedic injections and will also gain market share from
collagen as both a dermal and topical tissue filler in cosmetic applications.
The food and beverage industry will
relinquish its spot as the largest outlet for
natural polymers to the medical industry
in the forecast period. The growth will be
driven by strong demand from collagen in
wound care applications as well as cellulose ethers used in pharmaceuticals. Also,
oil and gas production followed product
price declines into 2015, which led to less
demand for oilfield natural polymers, especially guar gum.

Abrasion Resistant Coatings

Market Worth $8.46
Billion by 2021 - Growing
Innovation & Development Research and Markets
Research and Markets has announced
the addition of the Abrasion Resistant
Coatings Market - Global Trends &
Forecasts to 2021 report to their offering.
The abrasion resistant coatings market size is estimated to reach $8.46 billion by 2021, at a CAGR of 6.3 percent
between 2016 and 2021.
The metal/ceramic abrasion resistant
coatings segment is estimated to be the
fastest-growing type in the abrasion resistant coatings market. The rising demands for abrasion resistant coatings
with excellent chemical and corrosion
resistant properties drive this segment in
the abrasion resistant coatings market.
Ceramic coatings are inert to acid and
alkali actions and, therefore, are very
tough in nature. Oxide ceramic coatings
are electrically insulated and applied on

substrates using thermal spray technique

to protect from abrasion and corrosion.
In 2015, North-America dominated
the abrasion resistant coatings market
due to rapidly expanding marine and
power generation industries. The AsiaPacific region is projected to register the
highest growth rate, both in terms of
value and volume, owing to high demand
from China and India. China is the second-largest market for abrasion resistant
coatings, globally, with major demand
coming from the oil and gas industry.
Growing innovation and development
and rising demand in the industrial sector for novel and improved products are
directly driving the rise in the use of abrasion resistant coatings. Significant growth
and innovation, along with industry
consolidations, are projected to entail a
bright future for the market in the region.

AsahiGuard Sealant
Protects Architectural
Stone and Tile From
Damaging Stains
Decorative and functional architectural
stone and tile must be able to repel liquids and oil to maintain their appearance
and value. AsahiGuard for Stone and Tile
from AGC Chemicals provides the most
effective deterrent to liquid- and oil-based
stains that can ruin the aesthetics of both
porous and non-porous stone and tile.
AsahiGuard for Stone and Tile is effective for polished stones (such as marble
and granite), porous stones (limestone)
and very porous materials (concrete, terra
cotta, brick and paving stones). It is ideal
for applications such as countertops,
shower stalls, flooring, patios, walkways,
walls, hearths, backsplashes, fireplaces
and pool aprons.
AsahiGuard for Stone and Tile is a line
of high-performance fluorinated sealants
that require just one application added
in the factory or field either by brush or
roller. It cures quickly at air temperature
and is odor-free. AsahiGuard significantly
minimizes staining of porous and polished
stone by a wide range of common fluids,
including red wine, coffee, mustard, ketchup, blue ink, mayonnaise, soda, suntan lotion, motor oil and olive oil.
AsahiGuard makes architectural
stone and tile resistant to most common
spill-related stains. Surfaces treated with
AsahiGuard are more durable and easy
to clean, adding years of extended life
and value to stone products, said Mario
Vincenzini, technical service engineer at
AGC Chemicals Americas.
AsahiGuard uses fluoropolymers

treated stone. Liquid beads when spilled
on stone or tile treated with AsahiGuard
sealants. This beading action minimizes the amount of surface area that the
spilled fluid contacts, neutralizes penetration and enhances cleanability.
AsahiGuard is offered in a range of formulations, depending on the type of stone
or tile and indoor or outdoor use. Custom
formulations provide additional aesthetic
characteristics such as high gloss, low
gloss, enhanced color or a wet look.

in natural volumes has collapsed from
302,100 tons in 2012 to 149,100 in
2015 and most likely will continue falling amid
sharp rise of prices and low purchasing prices of
the population, according to a recent study of
the countrys analytical agency Pro-Consulting.
Agencys experts suggested that this is primarily connected with the decrease of the number of construction projects, while ordinary
citizens are no longer putting money into home
improvement. Market participants hope that
the market already hit bottom, since the sharpest drop in sales of 35 percent on a year-to-year
comparison was observed in the first half of
2015, while after that paces of decline significantly reduced.

30 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Pro-Consulting noted serious consolidation

tendency, as at the moment at the market there
are 200 companies operating, but the top-20
companies produce 70 percent of all coatings
and are steadily increasing their share, with
some portion of the smaller players over the recent two years had to leave market.
In terms of import, according to ProConsulting, Ukraine currently purchases coatings from 30 countries around the world,
but most of the deliveries are from Europe.
Depending on the different segments its share
accounts for 70-92 percent in overall structure
of import. However, the amount of orders for
purchasing of coatings from abroad has significantly reduced since the time of the crisis.
Sergei Khomenko, CEO of the Ukrainian
Paint and Coatings Association (UPCA) has
a quite similar vision of the situation. He has
indicated that at the moment Ukraine coatings producers met domestic demand by almost fully, but still have to operate only at 50

Russia International Coatings Scene

percent out of their full capacities.
Market participants admit that in
fact coating producers in the country
faced the period of the perfect storm
with numerous challenges brought by the
strongest demand since the time of independency political and economical crisis,
which took place in the country during
the recent two years.

Economy crisis
Over the last two years the Ukraine experienced the collapse of the national currency against the dollar by almost two times,
causing the similar rise in prices for most
type of coatings. Pro-Consulting estimates
show strong shifts in consumers demand
towards cheaper product, so as the result
today 50 percent of the market accounts
for coatings in the sub-economy segment
which roughly involve coatings with the
price lower UAH 50 (US$ 1.8) per pack of
1.5 kg, while the basic economy segment
occupy shares of 30 percent.
We have been also strongly affected
with the growth of the exchange rate [of
hryvnia], which led to rise in price of imported raw materials, energy and fuel. As
a result, manufacturers were forced to cut
imports of raw materials from abroad and
to increase prices for their products by at
least half, Khomenko explained.
As the result, in monetary terms collapse
seems to be much smaller, than in natural
terms. According to the data of UPCA the
fall of production volumes in the country
has been primarily associated with the
bankruptcies of small manufacturers. Since
the beginning of the crisis they were trying
to cut spends, changing receipts in the first
place substituting imported components
with cheap domestic analogues.
As the result, quality of the final product has been damaged and a large number of such firms have been forced to
leave the market, as they immediately lost
all customers. At the same time, mediumsized and large producers have been able
to take advantage from this situation, increasing their market share also because
of the falling import.
In Ukraine, there are operating
more than 200 manufacturers of coating, which in better times have been
producing 300,000 350,000 tons per

Top: JSC Voloshino one of Ukraines small manufacturers of coating in Ukraine is going through
hard times. Right: Ukriane produces 190,000 tons
of coatings per year.

year, said Khomenko. In 2015, according to the State Statistics Service,

the volume of production amounted
to 190,000 tons, which is 12.3 percent
less than in 2014. Overall, in contrast
to other industries, we can not talk
about an extremely critical situation,
he stated, meaning that some industries,
like automotive, since the beginning of
crisis showed reduction of production
volumes close to 90 percent.
He added, that the crisis in the industry has been partly connected with the
Russian annexation of Crimea and armed
conflict at the east of the country. Because
of these two factors the number of private customers was reduced by 3 million
people, so with the average rate of coating use in Ukraine at 6 kg per capita it
means a decrease of the market size by
18,000 tons.

Domestic analogues
Ukraine imports 20 types of raw materials for coating manufacture primarily
from Europe and despite numerous attempts of the UPCA and other market
participants, there is no progress in any
localization initiatives.

August 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

30-32 Russia Report 0816.indd 31

In 2015, we saw the rise in the share

of domestic production in Ukraine market with falling share of imported. We
expect this trend to continue in future. As
for raw materials, we are importing them
almost fully from Europe, maybe with the
exception of semi-finished nail for organic-soluble coatings, Khomenko stated.
According to the data of UPCA at the
moment the market for raw materials
for the coating industry in the country
has not even started developing. In the
country there is no scientific base and
money for the development of such types
of business, while foreign companies refrain from any investments into Ukraines
economy into its current state.
Real foreign investors do not see the
investment attractiveness of our territory. First of all, they absolutely do not

Ukraine has seen the reduction in the number of small

Ukraine sees rise of consolidation at the domestic market.

understand the financial policy of the

state. Although all companies with foreign investments in Ukraine are profitable, their owners for two years do not
have access to their capital. National
Bank does not allow Ukrainian producers
to buy foreign currency for the payment
of dividends. As a result, the investors
simply lose [the access to] money here,
Khomenko explained.
A similar opinion is expressed by representatives of local offices of foreign
producers. According to them, amid very
tough budget policy and the possibility
of full default of the Ukraine economy,
government has to apply to very strict
measures in 2014 and still did not cancell
them now.
Restrictions from National Bank
for companies to getting currency seems
pointless, as struggling against inflation,
regulator is killing any attempts for the
development of the countrys economy.
Ukraine should return fundamental principle of the inviolability and free movement of capital, as soon as possible, as
today foreign business are not even considering any further investments, commented local market participant who
wished to stay unnamed.
Meanwhile, representatives of UPCA
also complain that any development of
Ukraine analogues of foreign raw materials is hampered with the high interest
rates on bank loans which are equal to

25-30 percent. As the result, organization

forecasts that situation in this area will
not get better in the foreseeable future, at
least until improvement of general situation in countrys economy.

Call for reforms

Representatives of UPCA believe that
to improve the situation at the domestic
coating market government should apply to several measures to stimulate domestic demand and establish some first
export supplies.
According to Khomenko Ukraine today should look to the experiences of
Japan, the U.S, Germany and some other
countries who in times of recession supported manufacturers through reduction
of taxation by 7-10 percent as well as
cutting imported tariffs on equipment
and technologies.
At the same time with the support
of UPCAs experts in 2013 the Ukraine
coating industry has adopted European
standards on water-dispersion coatings in
part thanks to the created free trade zone
with the European Union some Ukraine
coatings producers has been approved to
export to Europe.
So far, the volume of supplies is miserable and may bring overall export to 1
percent -2 percent in the structure of sales
of Ukraine coating producers. However,
Khomenko believes in the future export
deliveries may play quite an important

32 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

30-32 Russia Report 0816.indd 32

role in terms of the development of the

countrys industry, even though he said
export should not be considered as a panacea for Ukraine coating manufacturers
to deal with problems.
Development of export becomes especially hard today as Ukraine producers
mostly focus on the production of the
cheapest products, which often have poor
ecological conditions.
With the tightening of ecological
standards in Western countries some
imported components may become
more expensive, so it is hard to speak
about development of export supplies
from Ukraine. At the same time, it is
necessary to understand that manufacturing of environmentally friendly
coatings is more expensive, while its
promotion requires some additional efforts, he stated.
In terms of organic-dispersion coatings harmonization of technical regulation in accordance with European
standards took place only in 2015, so
here in Ukraine producer is still in the beginning of the way.
Khomenko believes that the overall
situation in the Ukraine economy remains
rather complicated, so 2016 will continue
to be tough for coating producers. In general, representatives of UPCA attribute
the restoration of the coating industry
to general improvement of the countrys
economy as it is very dependent on the
situation in related branches, as automotive, shipbuilding and others, as well as
general human wellbeing. CW

Clariant Doubles Pigment Capacity in Mexico

by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent
thurstoncw@rodmanmedia.com

lariant is investing in new capacity for water-based pigments in

Mexico, with an expected fourthquarter start-up for a new plant.
With the new production plant
in Santa Clara, Clariant Mexico will
double annual production capacity for
water-based pigment preparations, said
Gisleine Souza, head of BU Pigments
Latin America. The demand for waterbased pigments and pigment preparations has been increasing significantly in
the last few years.
The size of the Latin American market for water-based pigments is an elusive
figure. Actually, it is not an easy task to
define the market size for water-based
pigments due to the diversity of applications in many industries. However, we
can say that Latin America is considered
a strategic market for Clariant due to its
growth potential, Souza allowed. Our

company has been exploring new business opportunities on a regular basis to

provide innovative solutions to attend
our customers and potential customers
needs, she added.
While the new line is in Mexico,
which frequently is dedicated to U.S.
demand, this operation will play a hemispheric role. This capacity increase
will enable Clariant to improve support
for North and Latin Americas current
and emerging market segments, including decorative coatings, non-impact and
flexo printing, industrial coatings, and
specialties like home care, personal care
and stationery, Souza said.
This investment is only the latest in a
string of strategic developments by the
company across Latin America. Clariant
has a strong footprint in Latin America
for all its business units, with production plants, laboratories and sales offices
in strategic markets, covering more than
eight countries, Souza said. Specifically
for pigment preparations, Clariant has
production plants in Brazil, Mexico,
Argentina and Chile, to provide solutions

for the whole region.

The cumulative capacity positions the
company well for the growing regional
consumer base for water-soluble pigments. Clariant is one of the leaders in
the pigment and pigment preparations
market in Latin America due to its strong
expertise, production capabilities, technical services and support, Souza said.
One requirement for growth in this segment is technological support for the customer, Souza explained. Sustainability is
gaining more and more importance in the
overall markets, including inks, paints and
coatings industries. Therefore, Clariant has
been supporting several customers in their
growth projects with tailor made solutions
based on the company technology and
know-how.
Among other water-based pigments
manufacturers in Mexico, Canadas
InterStar makes products in Mexico
City for concrete coloration as well as
acrylic sealants for concrete. Lanxess
and Eckart also are active in the market,
as is Evonik, which has five locations in
the country. CW

How Will Brexit Effect the UK Coatings Industry

Brexit would give

the UK the chance
of reaching its
own free trade
agreement, which
could open up
new coatings
markets outside
Europe.

by Sean Milmo
European Correspondent
milmocw@rodmanmedia.com

he UK coatings industry is pessimistic

about its future after the country voted
by a 52/42 percent margin in favor of
leaving the European Union.
A survey of its members by the British
Coatings Federation (BCF) soon after the vote
found that over 70 percent of them believe that
EU withdrawal, dubbed Brexit, will have negative effects on their businesses.
With around 60 percent of UK coatings exports going to other EU country, foreign sales
were forecast to decline by 25-35 percent.
Nearly a fifth of members were going to reduce staff, while 20 percent could potentially
move their businesses out of the country.
However, the BCF reckons that the outlook

34 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

34-35 Europe Report 0816.indd 34

is not all gloomy. Given the importance of

Europe to our members, I definitely have concerns about the economic impact of Brexit, said
Tom Bowtell, the associations chief executive.
However there may also be opportunities.
Brexit would give the UK the chance of
reaching its own free trade agreement, which
could open up new coatings markets outside
Europe. Once the country has left the EU, it
would be able to draw up regulations aimed at
easing the cost burden on business.
Just how much changes in the post-Brexit
era impact the coatings sector will depend on
the outcome of the negotiations on a withdrawal agreement between the UK and the EU.
These are likely to begin early next year, after
the UK has formally told the EU Council, representing EU governments, that it is invoking
Article 50 of the 2007 Lisbon Treaty which
allows member states to pull out of the Union.
The Brexit negotiations will then have to be
August 2016

Europe International Coatings Scene

completed within two years unless the 27
member states agree unanimously to extend the deadline.
Officially the UK is no longer an EU
member only when a withdrawal agreement has been approved by the EU
Council and the European Parliament
The UK government has not yet decided exactly what it wants out of the
Brexit negotiations. But it is likely to be a
deal enabling the country to have access
to the EUs single market without tariff
and non-tariff barriers. Norway, Iceland
and Liechtenstein, and to a lesser extent
Switzerland all non-EU countries are
already part of the single market.
Much of the European coatings industry would like the UK to stay within
the single market. The UK is one of the
largest national coatings markets in the
EU, after Germany, with annual total
sales of 2.2 billion ( $3 billion), according to BCF figures. The EU provides 86
percent of its total coatings imports.
The benefits of the EU single market are
that as one of the worlds most advanced
free trade areas it is without tariffs and
non-tariff barriers as a result of the harmonisation of national health, safety and
environmental regulations and standards.
However, under the conditions of single market membership, non-EU states in
the single market have to accept a basic
EU principle of free movement of people across borders and comply with EU
regulations over whose content they will
have no influence. They will also have
to contribute to the EU budget. These
could all contradict key issues which persuaded voters to back Brexit, in particular control of immigration and national
sovereignty.
The main alternative to a single market is a UK-EU free trade agreement.
Since negotiations on it would be conducted separately from those on a Brexit
deal, it could take years to finalise. Also
it would include tariff and non-tariff
barriers, so that it would curb levels of
trade between the UK with a population
of around 60 million and the 27 member
states of the EU with a total of around
440 million.
At the moment there is a massive
amount of uncertainty which is why

people in industry are so worried about

what Brexit will bring, said Peter
Newport, director of Chemical Business
Association (CBA), Crewe, England,
whose members include distributors of
coatings and raw materials to UK and
EU customers. No one knows what
will happen, except that whatever it is
will be different, he adds. Well just
have to make the best of it.

Given the importance of Europe to our

members, I definitely have concerns about
the economic impact of Brexit. However
there may also be opportunities.
Tom Bowtell, CEO of the BCF
Some of the more immediate uncertainties are about the implementation of
existing EU legislation both in the short
and long term.
Companies will have to comply with the
last registration requirements of REACH
the EUs nine-year-old regulation on the
control of chemicals which directly affects producers of certain coatings formulations and raw material suppliers.
The last phase of registrations under
REACH is due to be completed in mid2018, when the UK seems certain still to
be an EU member. By then safety dossiers on unregistered chemicals and their
uses will have to be submitted to the
European Chemicals Agency (ECHA),
the EU body responsible for administering the legislation.
As with other EU legislation we remain bound by REACH until a withdrawal agreement comes into place, said
Nishma Patel, chemicals management
director at the UK Chemical Industries
Association (CIA), London.
The legal position of REACH could
change radically once Brexit comes into
effect. Some UK-based lawyers are claiming that UK producers and distributors of
chemicals exporting into the EU may have
to re-register their products under REACH

August 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

34-35 Europe Report 0816.indd 35

because they would be classified as new

importers into the European Union.
If the UK negotiates something similar to the (single market ) option, existing
registrations will continue to be valid,
said Patel. For any other agreement it is
not yet clear what the outcome (for registrations) would be.
After Brexit, the UK could draw up its
own version of REACH. But this seems

improbable because it could create big

obstructions to the free flow of goods between the UK and the EU.
It seems highly likely that any subsequent UK (REACH) framework
would be based on the EU model, said
Christopher Hayman, CBA chairman.
Given the trend towards global harmonization, this approach seems both logical and practical.
With other EU legislation affecting
coatings, the BCF has already suggested
the UK introduce changes to rules on
emissions of volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) in sectors like auto refinishing.
A major concern among UK coatings
producers and importers is the effect of
Brexit on cross-border supply chains.
Many of the over 60 percent of coatings
producers exporting into Europe have
become well established in the regions
supply chains. Now these companies,
especially SMEs which make up a large
proportion of them, fear they will lose
their position in these chains once the UK
is outside the EU.
Such is the depth of the ramifications
of Brexit that the UK coatings sector will
need plenty to time to adapt to it. But
first they need to be certain what the consequences of leaving the EU are. CW

East Africa Coatings Congress Part II:

Threat of Lead in Paints Featured at EACC

Threat of lead in

at EACC.

by Shem Oirere
Africa Correspondent

he East African Coatings Congress

held in Nairobi June 8-9 was not
only a forum for industry insiders,
experts, consumers and policy makers to
converge and compare notes on the latest
industry trends, but also provided an opportunity for the United Nations Environmental
Programme (Unep) and other organizations
to sound the alarm over the growing threat
of lead poisoning and urge paint manufacturers to join efforts to remove the threat in
the short term.
Uneps Pauline Muchai told participants at
the Congress that although there is a wide recognition of lead poisoning and many countries

36 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

36-37 Africa 0816.indd 36

have taken action, exposure to lead, particularly in childhood, remains a key concern to
healthcare providers and public health officials worldwide.
Paint that contains additives poses a risk of
lead poisoning, especially for young children,
she said.
As lead paint deteriorates over time, children may inhale or ingest lead through household dust, paint chips or contaminated soil,
added Muchai.
She said Unep estimates that reduced cognitive potentials (loss of IQ points) due to
preventable childhood lead exposure is equal
to 98.2 million points in Africa, which translates into economic losses of about $134.7
billion a year.
Unfortunately it is still legal to sell lead
paint in many countries around the world for

decorating homes, schools and childrens
toys, said Muchai.
The Unep official cited new research
by the New York University, which
shows that the economic cost of lead
poisoning in South Africa could be as
high as $17.7 billion, an equivalent of
3.17 percent of the countrys gross domestic product (GDP).
The research estimates the economic
cost in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya at
$4.47 billion, $4.14 billion and $3.76 billion respectively which is an equivalent of
4.73 percent, 6.06 percent and 5.26 percent respectively.
She said Cameroon and Cote dIvoire
have a slightly lower economic cost of
lead poisoning at $2.52 billion and $1.76
billion respectively.
The loss of IQ in children has enormous economic cost with low to middle
income countries losing roughly $977
billion a year from lead poisoning with
Africa losing an estimated $135 billion,
she said.
Muchai said in Ethiopia the government of Prime Minister Hailemariam
Desalegn is now in the process of developing draft regulation for consideration by the Ethiopian Council of
Ministries that would establish a 90
parts per million (ppm) standard for
decorative paints.
She said the standard is based on a
recommendation from the Ethiopian
Standards Agency, which has consulted
the paint industry on lead poisoning
and that the standard is based on the
outcome of the East Africa Sub-regional
Workshop on the Establishment of Legal
Limits on Lead in Paint held in Addis
Ababa in December 2015.
In Kenya, Muchai said the countrys
standards regulator, the Kenya Bureau
of Standards (KEBS) is working on establishing the 90 ppm standard for lead
in paint which is also based on the outcome of the last years the Addis Ababaheld East Africa Sub-regional Workshop
on the establishment of legal limits on
lead in paint.
Tanzania is another Eastern Africa
country which through its Tanzania
Bureau of Standards (TBS) is also working on establishing a 90 ppm standard for

lead in paint based on the same standard

like that of Ethiopia and Kenya.
Global efforts to eliminate lead paint
are being spearheaded by Lead Paint
Alliance, an initiative jointly led by World
Health Organization and Unep. The initiative has a target of ensuring all countries adopt a legally binding law on lead
poisoning by 2020.
It also hopes to ensure all paint manufacturers have eliminated the use of added lead in priority areas by 2020.
AkzoNobel and the International
Paint and Printers Ink Council are some
of the advisory group members in the
Lead Paint Alliance.
Several approaches are being used in
securing the cooperation of governments
and manufacturers in eliminating use of
added lead in paint according to Muchai.
These include encouraging the paints and
coatings industry to voluntarily stop the
manufacture and sale of lead in paint,
convincing governments without existing legislation to enact lead paint laws by
overcoming possible barriers, recognizing elements of success of existing laws
that could be incorporated into ongoing
efforts by countries and input /advice/advocacy to get lead paint on relevant meetings and conference agendas such as the
African Union.
There is no known level of lead exposure that is considered to be safe, said
Muchai.
Childhood poisoning can have lifelong health impacts such as learning
disabilities, anaemia and disorders in coordination, visual, spatial and language
skills, she said.
Jeiel Guarino of IPEN, a global network comprised of more than 700 public
interest, non-governmental organizations
in 116 countries, said some paint manufacturers argue that transitioning to leadfree zones, would require more than a
year, a period that they think will see them
lose ground and therefore prefer waiting
for governments to set the regulations.
He told participants some of the paint
manufacturers say making the change to
lead-free paints will increase the cost of
the paint products.
Guarino said others manufacturers
argue the small quantity of supplies

August 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

36-37 Africa 0816.indd 37

that they need will cost more and that

creating and printing new labels will be
too costly.
However, Guarino said even if the
paint manufacturers are reluctant to
change to lead-free products the switch
to unleaded paints is coming and companies that change the quickest and advertise that they have done so will do the
best in the marketplace.
Those that wait for government regulations may be left behind, said Guarino.
He said the perception by paint manufacturers that changing to a lead-free
regime will be too costly for them ignores the fact that the cost to our children and our countries for not acting is
even greater.
We have talked to many companies who have reduced their lead content below 90ppm, and no one has told
us that it increased the price significantly, said Guarino.
The EACC participants heard that the
switch to lead-free paint products could
increase material costs by 2 percent but
the overall production cost is minimal.
While organic materials may cost
more, less is needed, and by careful pigmentation selection and formulation,
the cost differential can be minimized or
overcome, said Guarino.
The IPEN lead paint elimination campaigner said, creating and printing new
labels for the new lead-free products need
not be expensive because manufacturers
have options such as printing the labels
periodically as part of the overall marketing effort in doing business.
Guarino said the regulatory frameworks usually includes a phase-out
period during which new materials and
marketing strategies be developed.
Lead-free products offer opportunity
to capture new customers from competitors, he said.
Guarino said IPEN supports the
90ppm total lead because it is an
achievable and protective goal for lead
paint worldwide and also is a regulatory
standard in the U.S, Canada, Philipines
and Nepal.
Total lead provides a more predictable test for manufacturers who have test
results from ingredients, he said. CW

Marketing Mistakes

Marketings main

components: to
develop a plan for
a product/service
which supports
the firms strategy
and will bring the
firm a strategic
ROI and provides
coverage for the

ver since I took several MBA courses,

at Northwestern, Ive been a fan of Dr.
Philip Kotler (Professor of International
Marketing at Northwesterns Kellogg School of
Management). So when he discusses anything
about marketing, I listen. Kotler said marketing as a practice is in bad shape, I believe it.
Especially since, I share this position. Kotler
does not mean the theory of marketing but the
PRACTICE is in bad shape.
At present, many of our value chain participant companies (feedstock, raw material,
formulator and distributor) do not successfully handle this entire process. We do a great
deal of talking about the importance of bundling, CRM, competing globally, the WALMART syndrome, and differentiation, while
we cut marketing during times of down turns
when it is exactly the time to function on all
cylinders efficiently and effectively in marketing your products.
So, if marketing is so important, what are
marketings key functions? Marketings main
functions, I believe, have three important interrelated components: (1) to develop a plan for a
product/service which supports the firms strategy; and (2) will bring the firm a strategic ROI
and (3) provides coverage for the investment in
both time and funding.
Additionally, I believe marketing must
pull the firms resources through the strategic plan and push it (a total systems package)
through sales by creating a must have acceptance within the targeted market segments.
Professor Kotler has listed 10 Deadly Sins
of Marketing in his book of the same name. I
would like to suggest there are 5 critical mistakes, left unchecked, could be catastrophic to
the firm:
Your firm may be making these mistakes if
you are:
1. Lacking total value chain efficiencies and
end-user focus.

2.
Deficient in detailed understanding of
your competitors and their strategic impact on your business if their plans are
successful.
3.
Backroom, stakeholder relationships
are not managed well
4. Failure to understand branding, how to
develop and use it successfully in combination with all offering components
5. Lacks market plans and planning process
efficiencies.
Lets discuss each one of these mistakes and
how to make them go away.

Lacking total value chain

efficiencies and end-user focus
There are two extremes impacting this issue .
. . either the firm has NOT gained succinct insight into its market opportunities or it is NOT
well-organized to serve and deliver what the
target users expect. To resolve these issues one
must diligently determine a market by specific
needs within a segment and not simply by demographic or descriptive definition levels alone.
Sub-tactics to this segment analysis issues
that will assist you in successful marketing, are:
Segment prioritization, seeking customized
compelling offerings at each level.
Different customer needs within a given
segment may require a specific focused
sales effort (sales force).
A company display of the firms VALUES.
The target customer grouping at the top.

A transparent ease of customer-to-firm
communications via Websites and other.
Deficient in detailed understanding of your

competitors and their strategic impact on your business if their plans
are successful.
Core competitors must be correctly
identified by specific segments plus
an unbiased transparent assessment
of each must be made and, on a
planned frequency.
The obvious tactics to use in a
Competitive assessment are to:
Establish a captain-of-competition responsible for collecting
and dissemination of competitive
intelligence.
Contract with a industry-knowledgeable outside consultant to perform,
NOT just a competitive analysis, but
because they go hand-in-hand and
therefore, helps lower costs, a combination of a Competitive Analysis
and a Customer Satisfaction Survey.
Constantly monitor key competitors
new technologies.
Finally, but not always obvious, is
an analysis of the key competitors
SYSTEMS offerings and their
abilities to value sell.

Backroom, stakeholder
relationships are not
managed well
Stakeholders are those persons who have
skin-in-the-game such as employees,
suppliers, distributors and investors. The
indications that stakeholders are NOT
fully on board and committed are: universally unhappy employees; lack of attracting the best suppliers and/or distributors
and investors feel they are out of the communications loop and unhappy.
Some of the resolutions to the stakeholders contribution to the firms success are:

Management has a significant responsibility to first, before hiring employees, clearly develop the
companys values, vision, mission,
positioning, target markets and
customers. Once this is complete,
the company has a backdrop from
which to efficiently interview potential employees at all levels
Rewarding employees, suppliers, and
distributors in a meaningful but generous manner. Your company will

attract the best-in-class, motivated

people and they will tend to be very
loyal and significant contributors to
an overall team pro-active effort.
Each employee is a value. Treat each
as though they are the only employee. Constantly train them; empower
them with as much authority as they
can handle.

Suppliers must be incentivized to
perform as a team participant. One
successful tactic is to choose two
suppliers for each core item and develop a true partnership with both.
These suppliers become part of the
firms design or development team
allowing for a total value consideration . . . not just price, quality and
on-time delivery.
Distributors, properly managed, are
additional sources of market information. They can provide another
facet of intelligence for problemsolving issues in product/service design; delivery; and field support

Failure to understand
branding, how to develop Lacks market plans
and use it successfully
and planning process
in combination with all
efficiencies
offering components
You know you have a problem when:
When dont you have a brand or when
is it weak? Well your branding is a problem if:
Your coveted target market (through
a customer satisfaction/competitive analysis study) indicates your
company is significantly below your
competition.
Your brand image is not distinctive.
You allocate same amounts of monies in your budget to same marketing
programs every year.
ROI evaluation impact on your promo programs is limited.
Branding is a pan-company responsibility headed up by Marketing. Branding
provides a customer mind-set of expectations. A firm meets an equilibrium status
with its core market segments and individual customers when each targeted
customers expectations are fulfilled. The
higher the satisfaction level, the higher
the brand equity.

40 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

38-40 Business Corner 0816.indd 40

Most of our industry spends significant portion of its budget on what I call
prayer flag promotion, hoping they will
be remembered even when nothing new
is being said. Im not suggesting these efforts should be entirely abandoned, but
there should be an annual zero-based
budgeting exercise to determine the ROI
on such an image sustaining tactic.
For example, analyzing the overall issues the company faces one might find the
quality of technical service is an element
that, if resolved, would save or add significant revenue.
In this case, one may want to reduce
the prayer flag budget and increase the
Tech. Service budget aimed at improving
its quality.
In most cases today, most marketers
must supply a financial estimate of their
brand promotional efforts and an overall
estimate of the ROI. However, we see a
massive movement towards a circular consideration where the Marketing Manager
is held responsible for a much broader set
of product ROIs than ever before.

The correct componentry and logic is

missing from your market plan design.

Planning
does
not
consider
contingencies.
Cannot easily test the plan against
what if alternatives.
The resolution to the correct components and logic can be quickly resolved
by going to GOOGLE and inserting the
words . . . . Elements of a Marketing Plan.
This outline is universal and will handle
most company needs. However, each company has their own idiosyncrasies, which
may alter the order or descriptions.
One of the many management tactics
would be to ask Marketing to estimate what
they could do (in revenue) with a 20 percent
budgetary increase? Once that is done, ask
them to submit a budget with a 20 percent
reduction? After some considerable use of
this budgetary approach, management will
have a clear idea which Marketers can accurately forecast results. CW

Marine Coatings

The market for marine and protective coatings is being driven by an increase in ship
repair and maintenenace activities globally.
Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

ransporting goods by sea has historically been the most

widely used form of shipping throughout human history. Though it doesnt offer the speed of air shipping,
it remains the preferred method for larger, heavier goods such
as cars. It is also less expensive, less taxing on the environment, and there are virtually no restrictions on destinations. In
short, it is nothing less than a driving force behind a functional
global economy.
Keeping ships efficient is no small task. Coatings designed for
this market are specifically formulated to ensure smooth sailing (pun intended) and as such are used for anti-fouling, anticorrosion and self-cleaning purposes. Anti-fouling coatings,
which are used to protect ships from organisms that can impede
performance, have been the most in-demand over the last few

years. According to market research firm Transparency Market

Research, these coatings are primarily consumed during ship repair and maintenance activities.
In a market study published in October, researchers found
that an increase in ship repair and maintenance activities in various regions across the globe is projected to boost the demand
for anti-fouling coatings through 2020. Additionally, anti-corrosion coatings are expected to remain stable during the same
time period.
Anti-corrosion coatings are majorly applied during new
shipbuilding activities, the report stated. These coatings offer
protection to the surface from abrasion, corrosion and impact.
Foul-release coating is one of the popular marine coatings in
the maritime industry. Foul-release coatings are biocide-free and

environmentally compatible. Demand for other marine coatings
such as self-cleaning and self-polishing coatings is likely to be
stable through 2020.
High demand for marine coatings in Asia Pacific, especially
due to the emergence of China as a major player in the shipbuilding industry, is driving the marine coatings market in the
region, according to the report. The need for fuel-saving and
low-emission coatings are factors driving the growth of the
marine coatings market over the past few years. Growth in the
shipbuilding industry in India, Vietnam and the Philippines is
expected to provide large opportunities for players in the marine coatings market during the forecast period. However, volatility in prices of raw materials is projected to hamper market
growth during the same period.
Suppliers report that the marine coatings market saw a slight
decrease over the last 12 months, though there is reason to believe the market will continue to stabilize and remain strong.
Thomas Molenda, global platform director, marine coatings,
PPG, said that lower economic growth and an oversupply of
vessels is responsible for stresses in the marine market. New
construction of ships is at low levels and customers are suffering
from low freight rates, especially in the dry bulk sector. Were
finding that the tanker segments have performed much better
than dry cargo, he said. Globalization will continue to be
a positive macro trend that will benefit the shipping industry.
Although the new construction markets are operating at low
levels, maintenance and repair has been more robust.
Christian Ottosen, Hempel Hempel A/S group vice president,
marine marketing, said that tough times for shipping companies have created an increased demand for premium coatings, as
they help to improve operational efficiency.
Last year, he added, there were a great number of ships
entering mandatory dry docking. This large volume of dry
dockings was a result of the 2010/2011 new building deliveries
reaching their first mandatory dry docking, coupled with the
fact that many ship owners dry docked earlier than scheduled,
due to the anticipated requirement to fit ballast water treatment systems. Dry docking activity in 2016, however, is noticeably different, with the market down to the more normal
levels of 2014.
Growth in this market is being driven, in general, by the size
of the global market fleet, Ottosen said. 2015 showed a growth
in the world fleet capacity of 3.3 percent, which poses both
growth opportunities for the industry but at the same time poses challenges to ship owners. Moreover, he added, the IMO
water ballast regulations were, at the time, expected to come
into force in January 2016, which provided an incentive to ship
owners to dry dock their vessels earlier than scheduled in order
to postpone the installation of expensive water ballast water
treatment systems. This lead to a general increase of 25-30 per
cent, globally, of dry dockings in 2015. 2015 also witnessed an
increase in activity for the sale and purchase market, with the
number of transactions 25 per cent higher than the average volume of tonnage sold between 2010 and 2014, leading to more
vessels being dry docked after the transaction.

Trends: beyond green

While the needs of the marine market tend to be consistent, an uptick in environmental initiatives has directly impacted this market.
Oscar Wezenbeek, managing director, AkzoNobel Marine
Coatings, said that ship owners and operators are facing increasingly tough times, with continued low freight rates, a
lack of liquidity, and impending environmental regulations.
Pressures from charterers, he added, and shippers to improve
operational and environmental efficiencies, as well as sustainability within the supply chain, add further challenges.
At AkzoNobel we understand the challenges that our customers face, and gear all the research and development that goes
into creating our products and services towards providing solutions that help to alleviate these pressures. In line with this, we
have seen an increase in the uptake of premium hull coatings,
such as our Intersleek range of products that improve operational and environmental efficiencies, reducing fuel consumption and associated costs and emissions.
In addition, we also developed shipping industrys first carbon credits methodology. Launched in 2014 in conjunction with
The Gold Standard Foundation and Fremco Group, the scheme
is based on ship owners converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to a premium, biocide-free hull coating
such as Intersleek. The pioneering methodology financially rewards ship owners for using sustainable hull coatings that improve operational efficiencies and reduce emissions.
Ottosen of Hempel added that, in the marine segment, many
vessel owners and operators are looking to improve fuel efficiency in order to drive long-term cost reductions.
Looking at paint supplies from a Total Cost of Ownership
perspective is becoming increasingly more and more important,
and we are focusing on assisting our customers to be more competitive by helping them reduce their operational costs, he said.
Evolving environmental regulations have been a key influencer
for innovation and technological advances in our sector. These
new regulations demand antifouling products with lower VOCs,
higher solids and less harmful biocides while, at the same time,
providing superior performance, which is why we have invested
heavily in R&D to modify and develop new coatings that meet
ship owners environmental requirements.
The current overcapacity in the market, Ottosen said, which
has developed in several shipping sectors, freight rates are low
and volatile, has put pressure on ship owners and operators to
constantly seek efficiencies that save time and cost.
The recent trend for slow steaming is continuing, despite
the lower oil price, meaning anti-foulings that had previously
relied on the relatively fast movement of the vessel through the
water to help remove biological organisms are now becoming
less effective. This has paved the way for a new generation of
marine coatings, he said.

Areas of growth, focus

While the Asia Pacific market has been the source of the greatest
growth in recent years, there has been a slight decline in activity
there due to decreased contracting of new vessels. AkzoNobels

Wezenbeek said that recently enacted environmental regulations such as biocidal production regulations have significantly affected the market. Suppliers and fleet owners are
also watching the Asia Pacific market carefully to determine
whether or not those countries will also enact their own environmental regulations.
Wezenbeek said, At AkzoNobel, we are leading the industry
when it comes to environmental regulations and sustainability.
All products manufactured by AkzoNobel are currently registered under national laws within the European Union. Under
the new BPR requirements, once the active ingredients are assessed, we will be required to seek re-approval for our products.
Dossiers for product authorization under BPR are expected to
be submitted within the next two to three years. The precise
legal timescales for this are yet to be published. However, we
know that the authorization process can then take up to three
years after the dossier submissions are complete, which means
that BPR is not expected to impact product approvals for at
least three years.
Wezenbeek added that all biocides currently used in
AkzoNobels EU anti-foulings are supported under the BPR.
Depending on the final requirements of the BPR human and
environmental risk assessments (some aspects of which are yet
to be established by the EU authorities) changes to formulations
may be required, but at this stage it is too early to provide a
definitive answer. In addition, we are actively working in China
and Korea to respect the legislation, as it evolves, he said.
Developing new products that minimize the industrys
impact on the worlds oceans, Ottosen said, is at the top of
Hempels agenda.
We understand the marine industry is under increasing
pressure to be both more efficient and to comply with evolving environmental regulations. We believe that the marine

coatings market can assist ship operators meet their environmental obligations by offering and developing coatings with
a high solids ratio.
The higher the solid content, the less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the atmosphere on application,
and 77 percent solids are becoming fairly standard for many
Hempel products. The positive side effect of a high solids content is that less paint evaporates on application ensuring more is
applied to the vessel less waste equals less cost - increasing our
customers operational efficiency, he said.
Ottosen added that environmental legislation in China is also
becoming increasingly strict. In February 2015, a new tax on
VOCs came into effect. A growth in Chinese public awareness
of environmental issues, particularly with regard to air quality,
means that we can expect more such legislation in the future,
he concluded.
PPGs Molenda said that as regulations spur ongoing
change in the industry, PPG continues to prioritize the development of new environmentally-friendly products. We, as PPG,
have to be responsive in order to find solutions for our customers. Were already seeing stronger environmental regulations
coming from some Asian countries and we expect that this will
continue, he said.

New technologies, products

Marine coatings suppliers are frequently introducing new technologies to the market. What follows is information on these
new innovations from select manufacturers, in their own words.

Zinc: A Global Suppliers Perspective

By Joe Husseini, International Sales and Trading director, U.S. Zinc
The marketplace is experiencing a recent uptick in demand for zinc. As a
result, zinc inventories are falling and
the prices are rising. Since the start of
2016, zinc has risen by almost 40 percent
on the London Metal Exchange Index
(LME). Specifically, there is a great demand for both zinc oxide and zinc dust
in the marketplace. Helping meet this
global demand with ample capacity, U.S.
Zinc operates four zinc oxide manufacturing locations and the largest singlesite zinc dust plant in the world. U.S. Zinc
relies on its connections with major zinc
metal suppliers for its raw material sup-

ply, which is comprised of recycled zinc

from various galvanizers and special high
grade zinc from the smelters.
U.S. Zinc is a major supplier of zinc
oxide and zinc dust. Zinc oxide is found
in rubber and tire, ceramics, lubricants,
chemical and pharmaceutical products
for a variety of enhancement purposes.
Zinc dust is used in primer coatings for
marine and industrial applications to inhibit corrosion. Zinc used in the galvanizing process acts to inhibit steel corrosion,
which dramatically extends the life of the
material in marine environments by protecting it from oxidation and water.

August 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

41-44 Marine 0816.indd 43

With the rebound in the steel markets, galvanizing services are in strong
demand. The galvanizing process occurs in a couple of ways. The batch process in hot dip galvanizing, or HDG, is
used to coat components with zinc in
smaller applications for fabricators and
smaller manufacturers. The continuous galvanizers, or steel mills, are typically larger individual plants than their
HDG counterparts, coating steel sheet
coils with zinc. Ships, bridges, rigs and
other marine-grade equipment have
galvanization and zinc to thank for this
great protection.

our products, and incorporates ship powering requirements for
representative hull forms including LNG carriers, bulkers, tankers, container ships and cruise vessels.
From a product perspective, the most recent coating
launched to the market in March 2016 is Intercept 8500 LPP,
AkzoNobels highest-performing biocidal antifouling in the
companys International range of marine coatings.
Intercept 8500 LPP is the culmination of ten years of R&D,
and investment in innovation by AkzoNobels research scientists, hydrodynamicists and marine biologists. The coating provides multiple benefits to ship owners and operators, including
improvements in operational, cost and environmental efficiencies. These are delivered through Intercept 8500 LPPs consistent predictable linear polishing fouling control performance,
which lasts for in-service periods of up to 90 months, even on
high risk fouling routes. Intercept 8500 LPP also comes with extended performance guarantees, proven in-service performance
on high fouling routes, and a unique polymer combination that
incorporates AkzoNobels patented Lubyon technology with a
silyl methacrylate self-polishing copolymer.
AkzoNobels Marine Coatings business has also recently launched a best-in-class anticorrosive universal primer,
Intershield One-2-One, which delivers simplified maintenance,
waste avoidance and enhanced corrosion protection.
This is a surface tolerant universal primer for use during on
board maintenance. It is based on the companys Intershield
300 pure epoxy technology, which provides a unique balance of
abrasion and corrosion resistance with optimum levels of hardness and flexibility, delivering long-term performance and effective corrosion control.
Application of Intershield One-2-One can reduce paint wastage significantly, as well as reducing the risk of incorrect mixing and subsequent coating failure. These benefits are possible
thanks to the availability of small crew-friendly pack sizes with
an equal mix ratio that can be handled with ease by users.

Hempel
Hempels fuel-saving hull coatings package is the most comprehensive on the market, and we also offer a number of other
cost-saving coatings. A cargo hold coating for bulk carriers was
launched in 2014 named Hempadur Impact, which protects
ship cargo holds from both mechanical damage and the severe
abrasion caused by loading hard, angular cargoes. With a short
drying time and a seven and-a-half year major repair interval,
this product ensures vessels spend less time in drydock and significantly reduces maintenance requirements.
In Asia Pacific, Hempel launched Hempadur Easy, a durable epoxy primer that was developed in response to customer
demands for a reliable, user-friendly and flexible coating for
use in drydock under all climatic conditions. Hempadur Easy

Asia Pacific Report

Key findings from leading market research firms indicate that the market for paint and
coatings in the Asia Pacific region is poised for more growth.

he Asia-Pacific region is rapidly expanding, fueled by

a growing economy and emerging middle class. This
growth is driving demand for many building and industrial materials, including paints and coatings. According to
market research firm IRLs report A Profile of the Asia-Pacific
Paint Industry, the total market for paints and coatings was
21.4 million tons in 2013, and is forecast by IRL to increase to
29.2 million tons by 2018; this is equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 6.4 perecent in the medium term.

Other Key Finding from the Report

China is by far the largest national market for paints and coatings in the Asia-Pacific region, followed at some considerable
distance by India and Japan. The smallest markets are those
of New Zealand and Singapore. While medium-term growth
is forecast to be low in the more developed and mature markets such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan, the developing
market of India is predicted to demonstrate growth of over 10
percent per annum over the next five years. India still offers
significant potential for paints and coatings market growth, as
per capita consumption remains very low.
The Chinese market is still offering good medium-term growth
of around 6.5 percent per annum for paints and coatings suppliers,
driven by growth in downstream industries such as automotive,
construction, shipbuilding, petrochemicals and civil engineering.
However, this forecast growth is lower than in previous years as the
country is experiencing slower economic growth, caused by rising
costs of labor, land and raw materials, and increasing taxes.
The third tier of growth markets comprises the Southeast
Asian economies of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines
and Malaysia. These countries are experiencing rising incomes,
improving standards of living and increasing domestic demand,
while labor and production costs remain relatively low.
Overall in Asia-Pacific, architectural coatings account for
just less than 50 percent of the total paints and coatings market,
although this figure varies considerably from country to country. Indias high share of the architectural segment, at over 80
percent, reflects the very underdeveloped nature of much of the
countrys industrial infrastructure.
Protective coatings and general industrial coatings (including
can and coil coatings) are the second and third largest end-use

According to findings from IRL, global sales volume of architectural paint

experienced a slowdown between 2012 and 2014, although the market is
expected to gain pace from 2015 onwards. In terms of value, global sales of
architectural coatings reached $60 billion in 2014. The majority of the market
value was generated by sales of vinyl/styrene/VAE paint, followed by pure
acrylic paint.

segments, respectively. New Zealand and Singapore are the only

two countries with no consumption of automotive OEM coatings, since they do not possess any automotive production facilities. Australias consumption of automotive OEM coatings is
expected to fall to zero by 2018 as the country loses its vehicle
manufacturing capabilities.
The relative importance of the protective coatings segment
is underpinned by the considerable activities in terms of oil and
gas production, energy generation and mining that take place
in many of the Asia-Pacific countries. Protective coatings have
a particularly large share of the market in China due to the fast
growth of sectors such as civil engineering, marine engineering
and container manufacturing.
Marine coatings have a very high share of the national paints
and coatings market in Singapore, reflecting that countrys importance as a regional hub for maritime transportation, and also
in South Korea, which remains a key shipbuilding nation despite
losing some business in recent years to China and other low-cost
countries such as Indonesia.

Industrial wood coatings are an especially dominant end-use
segment in Vietnam, thanks to the importance of the wood processing industry and the strong demand for Vietnamese-made
furniture from export markets around the world.
Although the market for plastic coatings is relatively small
in all countries covered in this report, it is of greater relative
importance in Japan and Taiwan, since those countries are key
manufacturers of electrical and electronic goods.

Highlights from Frost and Sullivan Report:

Market research firm Frost and Sullivans data on the coatings industry in Asia Pacific report that the coatings industry is sensitive to the growth of gross domestic product
(GDP), and tends to grow at 1.5 to 2 times that of Southeast
Asias GDP.

In 2014, the member economies of Southeast Asia
(ASEAN-6) experienced decelerating growth; 4 of the 6
recorded slowdowns that edged the subregional average
down to 4.5 percent in 2014. Indonesia and Thailand were
both among those decelerating in 2014.
Southeast Asia is poised for a growth rebound in 2015.
Aggregate growth is to rebound to 4.9% in 2015 and 2016,
as recovery in Indonesia and Thailand leads the way and
most of the subregion trends up and benefits from rising

exports and lower inflation.

The coatings market in Southeast Asia is expected to fare
well due to impressive growth in the construction industry,
a result of the development of residential & commercial
buildings as well as infrastructure. The optimistic economic
conditions anticipated in most Southeast Asia countries, especially Indonesia and Thailand, is expected to cause these
segments to witness buoyant growth, thereby influencing
the coatings market.
The SEA coatings market was worth $6.68 billion in 2014
and is projected to reach $9.93 billion by 2019, fueled by
economic growth and rising urbanization.
In 2014, the decorative coatings segment was the largest
application area, accounting for approximately 55.7 percent of the total market, followed by wood, protective, and
automotive OEM coatings.
Indonesia accounted for the largest share25 percent
with a revenue of $1.7 billion in 2014, followed by
Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Much of the focus is now shifting towards emerging marketsmainly Indonesia, Vietnam and the
Philippinesas volume is the name of the game;
these countries host large population of 251 million,
91 million and 99 million, respectively. CW

High Performance
Pigments Market
With an overall value of $4.76 billion, the market for high performance pigments is
poised for steady growth worldwide
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

he high performance pigments market is posed for steady

growth worldwide, according to the Smithers Rapra report, The Future of High-Performance Pigments to
2021. Analysts anticipate a global volume market of 178,844
tons in 2016, with an overall value of $4.76 billion. Across the
next five years, Smithers Rapra predicts the market for high performance pigments (HPP) will accelerate steadily at a compound
annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3 percent, reaching 206,921 tons
in 2021 at this time world market value will be $5.49 billion.
According to the Smithers Rapra report, with a 54 percent
market share, coatings remain the most significant end-use for
HPPs, followed by plastics, inks and cosmetics, respectively.
The fastest developing end-use segment is textiles, although it
will remain at approximately 2 percent of global consumption
across the Smithers study period. In terms of volume consumption, metallic pigments comprise 43 percent of the 2016 market
with consumption pronounced particularly in Europe followed by pearlescent and organic HPPs.
The market is evolving against a backdrop of dynamics,
some of which are common to pigment supply industry worldwide, and some that are unique to the high-performance segment. Smithers Rapras analysis identifies the following as the
leading six across the next five years:
Wider economic context: The HPP sector will need to negotiate the same economic mega-trends as the wider ink industry,
low petroleum prices, prospects of a slowdown in growth in
China, and the as yet undefined fallout from the UKs decision to leave the European Union.
Market expansion will be fastest in Asia already the worlds
largest regional market. In contrast growth in the second largest
region, Europe will be significantly below the market average,
with consumption in North America tracking the global CAGR.
Legislative phase-outs: With the dangers of lead-based
paints well known, steps to further phase-out this class of

pigments will continue. This situation is well advanced in the

developed world.
Through the years 2016-2021 there will be a shift towards greater restriction in developing economies. This will be
spearheaded by initiates like the World Health Organizations
International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, and will lead
to further market penetration of organic high-performance yellows and oranges and bismuth vanadate.
More sustainable HPPs are a future growth area, tracking
wider trends in the chemicals sector. In particular this will see
the evolution of more performance pigments whose production involve low or very low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) a step supported by new regulatory programs.
The reduction of VOC emissions is being achieved by moving to waterborne coatings and powder coatings. This requires
different pigment formulations especially dispersion technologies from those appropriate for solvent-borne applications,
and requires new investment in many cases.
Environmental interest: Pigment end users and consumers
are also increasingly keen on less environmentally damaging
pigment technologies that do not sacrifice color quality. This
is manifesting in new product launches like Axalta Coating
Systems new automotive tint line engineered for the Chinese
market. Flexo ink users are also responding positively to the arrival of heavy metal-free ink sets and Smithers predicts further
penetration across the next five years.
Chinese policy to push ingredient prices: Raw material
prices for HPPs stabilied somewhat during 2015, although
in 2016 these remain high. Supply of pigment intermediates
particularly those used to produce reds and yellows is a
continued concern. Many of these materials are produced in
China, and the Chinese governments continued efforts to
clean up its environment have resulted in factory closures,
which has restricted output.

As supply of these pigment intermediates constricts, upward
pressure on pigment prices is a possibility. Simultaneously pigment and end users are working on raw material cost reduction programs, which provides a business opportunity for HPP
manufacturers if they can be competitive on the pricing of their
products. Use of aluminium-based pigment will also feel the effect of a price increase, as China moves to end its policy of subsidizing smelting of this metal.
Consumer preferences: As demand from developing world
states booms, global pigment supply is having to align with
consumer inclinations in these markets. In the important automotive segment, for example, there is a need to respond to
the widespread preference for white vehicles, with red pigment
products also forecast to increase their relative share. At the
same time there will be a move away from what are regarded
as harsh synthetic products to pigments that deliver softer, more
natural colour effects.
Technical innovation: The forces acting on pigment producers is leading to investment in new technologies, including:

Organic nano-pigments, with platforms like PPGs
patented Andaro Tint Dispersion Technology, helping deliver
extended portfolios of colors with the dramatic face and flop

effects called for by designers and consumers. Dispersion and

milling platforms that can operate with these ultra-fine pigments
are also a necessary technical development that is now receiving
R&D funds from the likes of Buhler.

Cooling pigments that add the capacity to reflect near
infrared (IR) radiation as well as add color are another fast
developing segment. These HPPs are principally mixed-metal oxides. They are aligning with broader trends like environmentally
sustainable construction where their reflection of IR lessens heat
transfer into the interior and saves on air conditioning costs.

Pure color pigments are in greater demand, especially
those that can balance transparency and high chromatic performance.

Interest in high-performance bio-based pigments is
accelerating, driven by corporate and consumer interest in minimizing environmental impacts. This is a longer-term strategic
goal and is seeing pigment firms collaborating with public and
private organizations that already have experience of bio-derived chemicals.
HPP manufacturers Coatings World interviewed reported
high rates of growth. The market for high performance and
special effect pigments in particular is growing at the highest
rate within the pigment market, said Jens Reininger, head of
strategic marketing, Clariant Plastics & Coatings. Growth in
emerging countries in Asia due to lead chromate replacement
is contributing along with the growth of automotive and 3C
coatings sectors where HPP and special effect pigments have a
major use. Also having a positive impact is the current color
trend in decorative coatings which creates in the chromatic
sector a need for high performance pigments in the red, pink
and violet color indices.
Lansco Colors reported that sales of high performance and
special effect pigments have grown with double digit increases
year over year due to its success at bringing customers high performance pigments at fair prices. Lansco Colors was the leader
in bringing alternatives to previously patent protected products
and we have grown to a market leading position for these pigments, said Frank Lavieri, executive VP an general manager,
Lansco Colors.
While we have to recognize shrinkage in the overall pigment
market, mainly driven by the ink industry, Trust Chem is benefitting from an increase on the high performance pigments side, said
Falko Orlowski executive VP Trust Chem USA. Manufacturers
in Asia, Europe and the Americas are fighting for market share,
which results in lower cost for high performance and effect pigments. As a result, lower cost level HPPs are replacing low and
medium performance pigments for many applications.
The market has shown some pockets of improvement during calendar 2016. Volumes are strong, prices have eroded in
some markets due to competition and/or currency swings, said
Ron Levi, president, Bruchsaler Farbenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG.
Bruchsal, Germany. Our marketing presence and sales have
grown in India and southeastern Asia as a whole. We have not
established a plant in the region, growth has been attained via
local stocks and sales organizations.

Market expansion will be fastest in Asia already the worlds

largest regional market...growth in the second largest region,
Europe, will be significantly below the market average.
The Asia region particularly China and India continues
to drive growth for the HPP industry. Growth of high performance pigments is over-proportionally coming from countries
within the Asia region, said Dr. Stefan Ohren, head of product
management High Performance Polycyclic Pigments, Clariant
Plastics & Coatings. India is, for example, growing much
faster than other markets. Clariant Plastics & Coatings has
long had a well-established position in India. Our Marketing
& Sales Organization, as well as the location of pigment product plants in both Roha and Cuddalore and dispersion plants
in Roha and Nagda, are well-positioned to serve many countries in the Asia region.
The manufacturing of HPPs has been concentrated in either India or China for a considerable number of years, noted
Robert Poemer, business unit leader, Heucotech Ltd. In these
countries there are both world-class suppliers as well as second
tier suppliers. The second tier suppliers produce products that
can be used in some marginal applications and also to drive the
pricing down on the world-class suppliers.
Heubach Colour has been in operation in the Gujarat province of India. We produce a wide variety of organic piments in
our facilities including phthalos, indanthrones, quinacridones,
DPP and benzimidazolens, Poemer added. Our facilities
are 100 percent owned and operated by the Heubach Group.
Overall we are seeing an increasing demand of higher quality
products also in the emerging markets.
India is increasing its production capacities for HPPs, but not
at the same rate as China, according to Orlowski. As a Chinese
based manufacturer, Trust Chem has a solid footprint in manufacturing and sales in the Asian Pacific region, while also having significant sales in the Indian market. The North American
and European markets are still the most significant markets for
HPPs globally.
HPP manufacturers are constantly being challenged by their
customers to develop products that meet increasingly demanding
performance requirements. As a result HPP producer are launching products featuring excellent durability, color strength, dispersibility in a range of resin systems and environmental compliance.
Clariant offers quinacridone pigments based on renewable
raw materials as part of its commitment to sustainability. As
an example we promote our Pink going Green as Clariant uses
renewable raw materials to create bio-based high performance
quinacridone pigments for automotive, industrial and decorative
coatings applications, said Dr. Stefan Ohren, head of Product
Management High Performance Polycyclic Pigments, Clariant
Plastics & Coatings. Hostaperm Pink E (Pigment Red 122),
one of Clariants most important polycyclic pigments based on

renewable bio-succinic acid, represents Clariants switch to renewable raw material without changes in the product quality
and the guaranteed specification.
Heubach Colour in India has recently commissioned a facility for the manufacture of Indanthrone Blue Crude (PB60).
Heubach is the only company that controls the manufacture of Indanthrone Blue from the manufacture of the crude
through the final manufacture of a product that is widely used
in the automotive OEM and refinish areas, said Poemer.
As a result of this investment, we are introducing three new
shades: MLB3RHN, MLB3RH and MLB3RXH. Furthermore,
Benzimidazolone Pigments Yellow 151 and 154 has been introduced as high quality Yellows for the demanding industrial coatings application and the automotive segment. We launched the

a zinc-free anticorrosive pigment providing a not yet seen corrosion protection performance in a broad range of application.
Cabot offers three families of products carbon blacks,
primarily used for their color, fumed silica, used for rheology
control, free flow and mechanical properties, and fumed silica
dispersions for transparency. The market for Cabots premium
EMPEROR high color carbon black continues to be robust and
growing as a result of strong demand from the automotive industry, said Adam B. King, global marketing communications
manager, Performance Chemicals, Cabot Corp.
With the opening of its new Quinacridone plant, Trust Chem
is working on a new range of PR202 products and improved
PV19 and PR122 versions. We further continue to focus on
cost reduction through technical improvement and production
streamlining, said Li Wu, global technical director, Trust Chem.
Trust Chem is pushing more and more HPPs into the food
packaging market.
Lansco Colors has brought several new high performance
pigments to market recently. Lansco 1667 Opaque Orange 67
is one of the most opaque organic pigments on the market and is
finding wide acceptance in the industrial coatings market where
its properties are valued, said Lavieri. It is a bright clean orange with excellent value in use.
Bruchsaler Farbenfabrik continues to focus on bismuth vanadates and environmentally friendly pigment blends based on
this chemistry.
Easy dispersing and zinc free versions of our pigments are
just two of the technologies we recently introduced, said Levi.
These pigments find their use in high performance coatings,
plastics, building materials and specialty inks. CW

More Than Just a Passing Trend

he importance of color is lost on no one. It is one of

the biggest factors that shapes our lives and view of the
world. Color conveys emotion and defines cultures; it inspires us and provokes reaction. Though the end goal has always
been to produce an exceptional coating that conveys a point of
view on whatever structure it is applied to, the trends that architects use in order to tell that point of view have changed. Color
requests are getting more varied, and texture and prints have
become extremely popular in the last few years as they increase
the aesthetics that a panel and coating alone can provide.
Every color trend starts as a small idea in someones mind.
Whether an architect dreams of a vibrant red never before used
on a building, or a coating manufacturer sees the possibility of a
true blue pigment in a lab test tube, dozens of dimension-defying

colors are created every day. These colors are talked about behind the scenes, introduced in cutting-edge projects and then
asked for by the masses. But at the beginning, coating formulations are just as important as the idea itself, and years of research are put in before a product is ever brought to life and
considered a trend.

Coating Creation and Formula Make-Up

In the paint and coating industry, we know that it takes more
than mixing a few pigments and resins together to create a beautiful, long-lasting color. During the development process of a
coating, art and science are carefully combined to produce the
desired end product: a vibrant finish that is durable, sustainable
and imaginative.

FEATURE The Intense Color Journey

When designing boundary-pushing
products, innovative methods are explored and new materials tested to see
what achievements can be made that
will ultimately advance the industry as
a whole. One of the more interesting
and popular developments in coatings
over the years is a pearlescent finish
that can add shine, shimmer and even
change colors.
Research and development teams
put much thought and testing into
creating this illustrious type of coating, testing different formulations to
achieve exactly what they were looking for. Pearlescent pigments contain
mica flakes that are coated with different oxides, including titanium dioxide,
tin oxide or iron oxide. When light

colors when viewed from different vantage points. A shimmering copper-red hue blends impressively with the buildings subtle architectural materials of glass, stacked stone

Color Shifting Shades:

These inventive coatings offer a mesmerizing, bilateral
color finish. Thanks to recent advances in the technology
and chemistry behind a coatings makeup, multi-color finishes give the appearance of a color spectrum when viewed
from different angles or with varying amounts of sunlight.
Kamer Esers California home and the Exploration Tower
at Port Canaveral both showcase this color-shifting coating
that adds depth from every single angle.
For some projects, a little can go a long way. The architects
of the Humane Society Silicon Valley kept this in mind and
mixed natural colored coatings, like copper and brown,
with color shifting finishes to offer bold color consistency
mixed with a fluid finish feature.

Intense Tints:

Some people will always want to stand out from the
crowd, and Alan Kanner falls into this group. His home
in Takoma Park features a jet-black coating on metal panels with pops of playful hues. The black metal, a defining
component of the exterior aesthetic, was also selected to
function as a backdrop for a palette of accent colors and
reflect the paintings in artist Richard Diebenkorns Ocean
Park Series.
The Formosa 1140 Building in West Hollywood features
a striking red metal exterior that brightens its neutral surroundings and corresponds perfectly with the housing
units contemporary design.

Certain projects feature multiple colors simultaneously,
playing off of one another in glorious harmony. The Mosaic
Village, part of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte,
NC, does just this by mixing blue, gray and green coatings
on the new building. The colors aid the dynamic design of
the dormitory and tell the story of the locations connection
to jazz music.
A well-known brand like Crocs needs to keep up appearances, not only in regards to their products, but in their
brick-and-mortar locations, as well. When the company
began developing their flagship store in New York City
they knew they wanted to keep their brand aesthetic first
and foremost in all aspects of the design. They decided to
showcase their trademarked bright colors on the storefront
to ensure a lasting impression was left on everyone who
walked into, or passed by, the store.
Sometimes, you just cant decide on a single inspiration.
Architects of Bells Mill Elementary School used a variety of
inspirations, including brick and metal materials, historic
and modern influences, colonial and farmhouse designs
and four different colors to create this unique community
of buildings.
The Natural Route:
A popular design element is to highlight the natural surroundings of a building as opposed to fighting with them
for attention. Architects of the JW Marriott in Austin used
coatings that matched the natural resources found in the
local Texas environment. The materials used mimic the appearance of weathered steel, and the coating colors match
that of the nearby rocky terrain.
On the other hand, some buildings, like Judson University,
dont have the luxury of being placed among lush greenery or dazzling deserts. In this case, architects used natural copper colors as coatings for the expanding Benjamin
P. Browne Library and architecture program to represent
natural elements that arent found on the building site.
Color is ever evolving, as are we, and our preferences and attraction to certain colors will change as we do. As we see more
of what the world has to offer, our exploration into the realm of
color will become deeper and richer. Ultimately, its up to us to
define the trends and keep pushing the boundaries lets rise to
the challenge. CW

oft-touch or soft-feel coatings are

employed to create a variety of haptic effects on plastic, paper and metal substrates. Haptic effects can improve
a consumers perceived value of the product, and influence them to buy the product over other similar products. In fact
a recent study by California Polytechnic
State University showed not only did customers prefer cosmetics packaged in a
container with a soft touch coating versus a traditional coating, they were willing to pay a 5% price premium.1 Thus it
is no wonder interest in soft-touch coatings has increased in recent years. While
the study by California Polytechnic State

markets including automotive interiors,
small electronics, and appliances.

in terms of things known to be soft, such
as rubber, velvet, peach skin, rose petals,
silk, leather, suede, etc. Not only are these
terms highly subjective, the perceived feel
varies from person to person. A coating
that one observer might describe as velvety, another may find silky. Studies have
shown that factors such as age2 and sex3
affect how feel is perceived. In a previous
lab study we chose observers of various
age, sex, and training.4 Although most
could recognize a soft coating, their perception of which was the most pleasing
varied widely. While we found atomicforce microscopy (AFM) measurements
can distinguish between feel types when
the coating chemistry was different,4

additional testing showed that as the

chemistry became more similar, the relationship between adhesion force and
feel no longer held. In addition, AFM
cannot distinguish the quality of the feel.
Thus, for our subsequent studies we used
trained observers to judge the quality and
type of the feel effects.
Since consumer products are exposed
to repeated wear and contaminants
throughout their life cycle, soft feel coatings must also be durable. Balancing soft
feel with wear resistance is an additional
challenge. Wear resistance for soft feel
coatings is typically created by crosslinking multifunctional isocyanates with
polyols. This process creates hard regions
from the isocyanates distributed in softer
regions created by the polyols, as can be
seen in the idealized structure in Figure
1. While these two-part systems have excellent feel properties, two-part urethane
coatings have disadvantages such as pot
life limitations, long cure times, and hazards of isocyanate handling. To address
these issues as well as to improve durability, formulators and product designers
look increasingly toward UV-cured softfeel coatings.
In a previous study, inspired by two-part
isocyanate systems, we demonstrated our

structure.

ability to create a UV-curable soft-touch

coating with good feel and improved mar,
abrasion, stain, and chemical resistance
compared to conventional two-part urethane coatings.4 The system created had a
silky feel. Achieving soft-touch coatings of
various feel types is necessary to fit the requirements of a wide range of applications
and products. This article details the development of a range of custom designed
UV-curable soft touch products that have
tailorable feel and improved properties
over two-part urethane coatings.

New Advances in UV-Curable Soft-Touch Coatings FEATURE

Experimental
Table 1 shows a base soft-touch coating
formulation. Silica was added as both a
surface additive to impart soft feel and as
a matting agent. The acrylate resin was
dissolved in solvent to reduce the viscosity and to provide enough shrinkage to
allow for the migration of silica to the
films surface, which is necessary to reduce friction and impart a soft feel.5
After applying the formulations, the
panels were dried for 15 minutes at 60 C
to remove the solvent. The coatings were
then cured with two mercury arc lamps at
400 W/in and a belt speed of 50 fpm resulting in a final film thickness of 2 mils.
The panels were allowed to stand overnight before testing for abrasion, solvent,
food stain, sunscreen, and insect-repellent
resistance, pencil hardness, and adhesion.
Experienced observers rated the feel
of the panels by type and quality. We
divided the range of observed feel into
three regions: rubbery, velvety, and silky.
Rubbery describes a coating close to rubber, which has more grip (less slip) than
a silky (silk-like feel) coating. A velvety
coating has a slip/grip feel between that
of rubbery and silky. The observers also
rated the quality of the soft touch on a
scale of one to five, with one being a poor
match and five being an exact match to
the coatings respective feel type.

Table 2: Adjusting feel type with crosslinker concentration.

Figure 2: Properties of UA6 and UA7 as a function of crosslinker content.

Results And Discussion

In our initial screening, we used difunctional urethane acrylate oligomers (UA)
to mimic the softer polyol regions in the
traditional two-part systems and trifunctional acrylate crosslinkers (M) for the
harder isocyanate regions.4 We found
that UA5:M1 at 60:40 created a good
silky feel with improved durability over
the conventional two-part urethane system tested. By reducing the amount of
crosslinker, we were able to achieve a velvety feel, but the durability of the coating
decreased significantly (Table 2). Since a
reduction of crosslinker alone cannot be
used to change the feel type while maintaining durability, we set out to design
new urethane acrylates and crosslinkers.
The new difunctional urethane acrylates UA6 and UA7 were evaluated
in the same way as UA5 by varying the

concentration of crosslinker M1 (Figure
2). While UA6 and UA7 both create a
rubbery coating with 10% crosslinker
on resin, UA6 has several advantages
over UA7. First, we achieve a feel with
more grip (velvety) using UA6 without
the need to decrease the crosslinker as
much. The ability to use higher levels of
crosslinker is advantageous as it allows
for higher crosslink density and better
coating durability. In addition, UA6 had
a better overall feel quality than blends
with UA7 (not shown in figures). While
we were able to achieve a rubbery feel at
90% urethane oligomer UA6 and 10%
crosslinker (M1), the films did not have
the desired durability. When we increased
the level of crosslinker (M1) to 17.5%,
we were able to achieve a rubbery coating
with improved properties over the previous rubbery coating that contained 10%
crosslinker (Figure 3).
In our second approach we attempted
to create a soft touch coating with an existing trifunctional acrylate crosslinker
and low functional acrylate monomers
(AM) as the soft connecting segments instead of difunctional urethane acrylates.
Formulations with the existing crosslinkers and monomer (AM1) did not
achieve the desired combination of feel
and properties (Table 3). Formulating
newly designed crosslinker, M6, with
acrylate monomer, AM1, at 60:40 crosslinker to acrylate monomer, resulted in
both good feel and good durability, as
seen in Table 4, formulation 53. After
varying the monomer formulated with
M6 to screen for improved feel and durability, we found M6 with AM5 had
the best velvety feel of all our previously
tested formulations (Table 4) along with
good durability.

Conclusions
Newly designed oligomer UA6 and crosslinker M6 allow us to create UV-curable
soft-feel coatings with a range of haptic
sensations (Figure 4). These new products
show improved durability over the industry standard two-part urethane coating
tested and exhibit little to no decrease in
soft-touch feel quality. In addition to enhanced durability, the UV-curable systems
have infinite pot life, short cure times and

WACKER Expands
Production Capacity for
Silicone Sealants
Wacker Chemie AG is expanding its silicone elastomer production capacity in
Jincheon, South Korea. The new facilities
will include production plants for silicone
sealants, specialty silicones and liquid
silicone rubber. At the same time, existing production units in Jincheon will be
transferred to the new site. Investments
for the expansion will total approximately 16 million. The new expansion project is WACKERs response to growing
regional demand for silicone elastomers
in the construction, electronics and automotive industries.
The new production site is located in
Jincheon, roughly 100 km southeast of
Seoul. The Asian market for sealants
and encapsulants is growing at an incredible rate, noted WACKER Executive
Board member Auguste Willems. In order to meet increasing demand over the
long term, we have decided to significantly increase our production capacity in
Jincheon. In this way, we intend to secure
and continue expanding our position as a
leading silicone manufacturer in the region
and profit from Asias strong growth.

applications and a variety of

specialty silicone products for
the electronics industry. Due to
space constraints, however, capacity expansions at the existing site are
not possible. For this reason, WACKER
will dismantle the production facilities
there late next year and transfer them
to the new site in Jincheon. Our objectives in building the new site are twofold: first, the site will create additional
production capacity, which we will utilize for expanding our regional silicone
sealant business, Willems emphasized.
At the same time, we also intend to
continue growing our business regarding
specialty silicones.
For several years now, WACKER has
been developing specialty silicone gels,
encapsulants and thermally conductive
silicone adhesives for the electronics
and lighting industries. During this time,
South Korea has emerged as a stronghold
for automotive and consumer electronics.
That makes Jincheon the perfect location for these kinds of specialty silicones,
Willems added.
Silicone sealants and specialty silicones will be produced in physically
separate areas on the site, which has
a size of 2.5 acres. This will allow the
company to optimize its production processes and maximize its flexibility for
future expansion projects. The building
will also include its own cleanroom area
for producing and packaging silicone
gels, encapsulants and silicone elastomer
products under suitable conditions an
increasingly frequent demand, especially
for optical applications.
Over the past few years, our Center
of Electronics Excellence in Pangyo has
been very successful in its efforts to develop products for the electronics industry in South Korea and elsewhere in
Asia, said WACKER SILICONES president Robert Gnann. The aim of our
investments is to allow us to participate
in the growth of the electronics industry
over the long term. With the expansion
of our production capacity in Jincheon
we will be able to support our customers future growth by continuing to provide premium silicones in the quantity
and quality they need.

EVERTREE
Consumers are increasingly concerned about the impact on health and
the environment of Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, used in many household products, including resins, glues, paints and
building materials.
Evertree offers
plant-based alternatives to traditional
VOC-emitting chemicals found in these
products. The first application will target the wood composite panel industry
and will help to reduce or even remove
the presence of, and exposure to, formaldehyde. Derived from rapeseed meal,
Evertrees products and technologies
are vanguards of a new generation of
wood composite panels, which are
more competitive, as well as health and
environment-friendlier.
The SPI Socit de Projets Industriels
(Industrial Projects Company) investment
fund, financed by the French Programme
dInvestissements dAvenir (Investments
for the Future Program) and managed by
Bpifrance, has joined forces with the Avril
Group and the Israeli start-up Biopolymer
Technologies (BPT) in the Evertree joint
venture. The operational ramp up of this
innovative joint venture in renewable
chemistry should enable production start
in 2017 with the launch of an industrial
pilot plant in Compigne, France, and the
opening of a dedicated production facility
in 2018. The production capacity should
be gradually increased to reach 50,000
tons per year by 2020, thus enabling the
creation of 110 direct jobs.
Through this joint venture, the three
partners intend to foster the development
of new commercial uses for vegetable
proteins, in order to address new manufacturing requirements and growing consumer expectations, especially in terms
of VOCs reduction or even removal.
Indeed, VOCs exposure may affect health
(irritations, reduced respiratory capacity, olfactory pollution; some VOCs are
also considered to be carcinogens) and
the environment (an early factor in ozone
formation, greenhouse gases, and the formation of secondary particles).

60 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

57-60 Indy News 0816.indd 60

In this context, Evertree will market an

initial promising industrial application:
Devised by Biopolymer Technologies
and subsequently developed in partnership with Sofiprotol, Avrils investment
and development company, it involves
manufacturing a resin additive from
rapeseed meal, much sought after in the
wood composite panel industry.
This additive targets industrial clients
in the sector, who will be able to use less
resin for an equivalent performance, substitute the current resins with less toxic ones
and optimize their distribution, therefore
achieving significant productivity gains.
Furthermore, this new market opportunity for the agribusiness sector will not
require the use of large volumes of rapeseed meal 50,000 tons worldwide, and
will markedly enhance the added value of
rapeseed protein.

Lanxess Introduces High-Tech

Microgranules for Brilliant Colors

ANXESSs
Rhein
Chemie
Additives (ADD) business unit
offers organic Macrolex Gran
colorants for the brilliant coloring of
amorphous and semicrystalline plastics.
Thanks to their microgranule form, the
colorants compare extremely favorably
with powders and compact granules
owing to their excellent dispersion and
processing properties and safe handling,
according to the company.
Macrolex microgranules consist
of hollow spheres that can be easily
crushed, which means they can be quickly, evenly and completely distributed and
incorporated into the plastic. The excellent processability of the product is due
to the fact that the hollow spheres comprise particularly small primary particles
of between around two and ten micrometers depending on the color. The good
free-flowing properties of the 0.3-millimeter spheres make precise metering
easier and prevent clumping in the mixing process. The four times higher bulk
density compared with powder pays
dividends in processing, transport and
storage alike.
In addition, the granules make an
important contribution to occupational
safety and environmental protection.
Containers can be completely emptied,
for example. Dust development in the
processing of Macrolex Gran is much
less than with powders. This means there
is a considerably reduced risk of dust
explosion, and expenses for protective
measures and facility cleaning can be
considerably reduced.

BASF Introduces Lumina

Royal Dragon Gold
BASF has added Lumina Royal Dragon
Gold effect pigment to the Lumina Royal
product family.
The new Lumina Royal Dragon Gold
EH 0908 is a brilliant green shade gold
mica effect pigment that offers the highest lightness and strongest sparkle in

styling for yellows and greens. It extends

the color space potential of high chroma
shades for packaging, consumer electronics, household appliances, sporting goods
and other specialty applications.
Thanks to its unique coloristic
properties, the pigment enables exploring new boundaries of the colors
and effects space for a wide range of
colored plastics applications and allows a greater formulation flexibility
to customers. It additionally enables
approaching brilliance of coatings
finishes when applied in a high gloss
polymer molding.
Lumina Royal Dragon Gold joins five
previously launched highly chromatic
Lumina Royal pigments including Aqua,
Blue, Indigo, Magenta and Copper that
are being widely adopted.

Announces In-stock DualShaft Mixers
Ross has announced that its Dual-Shaft
Mixers, suitable for mixing 50-, 100and 200-gallon batches, are now available from stock. The Models CDA-50,
CDA-100 and CDA-200 are equipped
with two independently-driven, variable-speed agitators: a high speed disperser and a two-wing anchor. Working
in combination, both agitators provide
adjustable shear and efficient turnover
of low to high viscosity materials including pastes, gels, suspensions, slurries and
fine dispersions up to several hundred
thousand centipoise.
The in-stock CDA models come standard with an air/oil hydraulic lift, vacuum
capability, jacketed mix vessel, stainless
steel wetted parts and inverter-duty motors. Options such as rotor/stator assembly in lieu of the disperser, sidewall and
bottom scrapers on the anchor agitator,

DeBeer Refinish Expands

Color-Mixing Systems with
Launch of Metallic Bright
Red with Cand Effect
DeBeer Refinish has expanded its color mixing systems with the launch of
Metallic Bright Red with candy effect for WaterBase Series 900+. Bright
red cars with a candy effect finish can
now be easily repaired to the highest
standard.
According to the company, no system in the market has been able to easily repair bright red effect colors. Its
been said that refinishers would rather not work with a candy effect finish. Now, thanks to the innovation of
their color mixing laboratory, DeBeer
Refinish has made it possible for every
car refinisher to easily repair this challenging car color category to the highest standard.
Using a simple 3-layer system, paint
technicians can achieve the finest results:
a deep, metallic bright red color that is
unmottled and completely matches the
cars original color.
The first layer is a colored effect metallic undercoat that instantly provides
the desired effect in a red that matches
the cars original color. The next layer is
an easy to apply, slightly tinted, transparent basecoat that provides extra
depth and color precision. The finishing
layer is a 100 percent transparent clear
coat, which ensures a glossy result with
long-term protection.
The company reported that worldwide
patents have been requested both for the
film build used to achieve the candy color
effect and for the repair method used to
apply this film build.
DeBeer Refinish Metallic Bright Red
can be applied to a range of bright red
metallic cars including cars manufactured
by Renault, Alfa Romeo, Mazda, Opel,
Ford and Peugeot. It is available in 1 liter (WaterBase Series 900+) and 3.5 liter
(BeroBase Series 500) containers. CW

The Harbin House in China

ikas high-performance sealing and bonding solutions enable outstanding architecture to become reality. One example of this
is the Harbin Opera House in Northeast China, which had very special requirements in terms of its construction and the
performance of its construction materials. Recently the cultural landmark project was recognized as one of the worlds best
buildings for its outstanding architecture.
The Harbin Opera House is built to withstand hardships. Harbin, also known as Ice City or Moscow in the East, is the
capital city of Heilongjiang Province in China and has approximately 5 million inhabitants. Temperatures range from as low as
-40C in winter up to 40C in summer. The opera house is located on the north bank of the Songhua River where the river bed
forms various curves due to constant changes in the water level. CW

Harbin Opera House, a landmark building in a harsh climate with temperatures ranging from -40C in winter up to 40C in summer, posed great challenges with
respect to building materials.
