Expanded Outline of Todays Lesson

1.Introduction to the Lesson (Set Induction):
Raise your hand if you ate candy yesterday or over the weekend in
celebration of Halloween? (Pause to see feedback from students) Well I hope
you didnt eat too much candy because today we are going to be continuing
with our nutrition unit. Specifically, you will be examining your own diets
using the SuperTracker tool from choosemyplate.gov to see how healthy our
diets are. We will be taking a look at the contents in different foods today and
how they do or do not fit into a healthy diet.
2.Bell Ringer (Instant Activity): -- Record your diet from the previous day
(Brainstorming)
To start out todays lesson I want you to fill out the What did I eat
yesterday? Bell Ringer worksheet. Students will record all of the food that
they consumed yesterday, and write the foods down in the appropriate
category. For example, If a bagel and cream cheese was eaten for breakfast,
they will write bagel and cream cheese under the breakfast category.
3.Content & Instructional Strategies:

Content: What facts need to be provided to support the objectives?

I.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Diets (Lecture)

A. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
1. What is it? (Q&A) (Lecture)
a) RDA: average daily level of intake sufficient to meet
the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97%-98%)
healthy people. (What is recommended to eat
every day to maintain a healthy diet)
B. Daily Food Group Targets (Lecture, Hands-on Learning)
1. Grains
a) 6 oz
2. Vegetables
a) 2.5 cups
3. Fruits
a) 2 cups
4. Dairy
a) 3 cups
5. Protein Foods
a) 5.5 oz
6. What do these look like?
a) Pass out the different containers showing an
estimate of the daily food group target amounts
C. Sample Diet (Guided Discovery)(Lecture)
1. Instructors will list 3-4 food/drink items on the board.
a) Students will plug in these foods to SuperTracker
from diet given and observe the percentages they
fulfill using the graphs provided by SuperTracker.
D. Current Diet (Independent Application)
1. Students will log their diet from the Bell-Ringer activity
a) Students will analyze their nutrition graph and
determine whether or not their diet is considered
healthy or unhealthy.
b) Students will answer questions in relation to their
diet (Q&A, Brainstorming)
(1) What areas do you need to eat more or less
in?
(2) What are some foods that could help get
your levels closer to 100%?
E. Developing a Healthy Diet (Brainstorming) (Collaborative
Learning)
1. Students will create a diet that satisfies all recommended
ranges within the +/-15% range
a) Students will exchange and list ideas with
partner(s) of different foods that satisfy the
categories
b) Students will use list to develop the diet together

(1) Diet must be appropriate for all meal times

(eggs at breakfast, steak at dinner, etc)

Instructional Strategies: How are you going to teach/deliver the content?

Question & Answer, Active Participation, Collaborative Learning,
Brainstorming, Guided Discovery, Hands-on Learning, Independent
Application

4. In-Class Learning Activity(ies): Sample Diet (Guided Discovery)

(Lecture)
(Skill to be practiced: Accessing Information)
Students will open chromebooks and follow the given instructions on
accessing the SuperTracker tool.
Go to www.choosemyplate.gov
ONLINE TOOLS tab Choose SuperTracker
From the next page they will then choose the SuperTracker option
Set tracker to Sundays date (10/30/16)
Follow along with the instructors to plug in the appropriate foods
(GO)
After they finish, students will give a thumbs up to indicate that they have
followed all of the instructions.
If any students have a question or problem, they will raise their hand.
4. In-Class Learning Activity(ies) Whats in your Diet? (Brainstorming,
Independent Application)
(Skill to be practiced: Accessing Information, Self Management)
Students will work independently for this activity
Each student will use their bell-ringer worksheet of what they ate the
previous day and enter that information into SuperTracker.
After plugging in all of the food consumed the previous day into SuperTracker,
the students will look at the results of their diet and compare it to the
requirements for a healthy diet introduced earlier in the class.
After looking at the results of their diet and how it compares to the
requirements for a healthy diet, students will then think about their results in
regard to questions posed on powerpoint
What areas do you need to eat more or less in?
What foods could you add/subtract from your diet that could help get your
levels closer to 100%?

4.

In-Class Learning Activity(ies) Create a Diet

Students will set tracker for date of class
In groups of 2-3 students will collaborate to create a days worth of meals that
are as close to meeting the 100% value in each of the 5 categories as
possible.
They will attempt to fulfill the following criteria:

Try to be within 85%-115% (+/- 15%)

If students are having difficulties, they will be able to utilize the internet to

find foods that may help satisfy a daily food group target.

4. In-Class Learning Activity(ies) Diet Reflection

Using their chromebooks, students will type up an in depth response about
their diet from the past day that has been plugged into SuperTracker.
Each writing response must have:
Comprehensive, complex, accurate knowledge showing breadth and
depth of information
Conclusions that are drawn based off of the results of plugging their
diet into SuperTracker
At least an introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion paragraphs
that are at least 5 sentences in length.
Each response must outline the areas of their diet in which they must
improve, along with two strategies on how to change their diet
Correct spelling and grammar
5. In-Class Learning Activity Assessment-Description & Criteria
An analytical rubric will be used to grade the in-class learning activity Whats
in your Diet? on content (Core Concepts), health skills (Accessing
Information), and additional criteria.
Core Concepts: Must be comprehensive, complex, accurate knowledge,
showing breadth and depth of information
Students must include content specific to their feedback from the
SuperTracker website, and it must be accurate, comprehensive, and
conclusions must be drawn from the information.
Accessing Information: Students must drawn conclusions based off of
the results of plugging their diet into SuperTracker
Students must include all of the additional criteria in their response:
The response should be able to describe all of the areas that need to
be improved in the diet
Two strategies on how to change their diet
Identifies healthful behaviors
Demonstrates healthful behaviors, habits, helpful techniques
Identifies protective behaviors: strategies to avoid/manage unhealthy
situations
Use correct spelling and grammar
Contain at least 5 sentences per paragraph
Contain an introduction, body, and conclusion paragraph
6. Final Thoughts/Conclusion to the Lesson
Excellent job with analyzing your diets! Hopefully with the new information we
learned in class today we can make smart choices in our lives when it comes to
nutrition!
How many of you remember what RDA stands for? (Wait for students to raise
hands, then ask for choral response).

What is a food that you decided to remove from your diet? What target area did it
affect?

Be sure to use the SuperTracker to help track your food and see what areas of
nutrition you need to work on! Have a good day!

Sample Artifact

A diet is made up of the food that we eat each day. A persons diet is very
important for improving their overall health. It is vital that an individual eat a
balanced diet. Each diet should consist of grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy, and
protein. I evaluated my diet in my health class and this is what I found.
When looking at my diet, there were three areas specifically that I need to
improve. The first is my dairy intake, in which I had only 57% of the daily
recommended intake for dairy. This is something that I could easily improve by
having a glass of milk at each of the meals each day. Vegetables is a second
category in which I could improve my diet.
I ate only 49% of the daily
recommended amount of vegetables, and this is something I could improve in my
diet by simply looking to include more vegetables in my meals. One good strategy
I could use would be to try to have at least one serving of vegetables at each meal.
The final category of my diet that I need to improve is my caloric intake.
Specifically, I consumed too many calories based off of the recommended intake
each day by 600 calories. I think that the amount of calories would be significantly
reduced if I am able to reduce the amount of snacks and candy that I consumed. I
ate a great deal of candy because Halloween was yesterday, and I think that caused
the spike in the amount of calories I ate.
I learned a great deal from plugging in my diet into SuperTracker. Specifically
I would like to improve on including more dairy and vegetables in my diet in order to
fully satisfy all categories of my diet. Additionally, I think it would be beneficial to
reduce the number of snacks to decrease my calories.
I hope I can use
SuperTracker in the future to help track my diet. If I am able to do all of these
things, I will have a much healthier diet and my health will be improved as a result.
