General Chemistry 2

Semester, 3rd Quarter

2nd

Experiment 1
Marble Race
Objectives
1. Determine and compare the viscosity of some liquids
2. Relate the viscosity of liquids to their intermolecular forces
Materials
1. Graduated Cylinders
2. Stopwatch*
3. Marbles*
4. Liquid Soap*

5. Coconut Oil
6. Balance
7. Ruler*

Procedure
1. Record mass (in grams) of the marble
2. Fill one graduated cylinder with 100mL of Liquid soap. Measure the height (in cm) of the liquid.
3. Hold the marble at the opening of the graduated cylinder in one hand, and the stopwatch in the other
4. Simultaneously, drop the marble into the cylinder and start the stopwatch
5. Stop the timer once the marble reaches the bottom. Record the time and repeat for 2 more trials.
6. On another graduated cylinder, perform three trials using coconut oil.
7. Clean up the materials

Guide Questions (should be answered in discussion part)

1. Is it important to fill the graduated cylinder up to the same height each time? Why or why not?
2. How can you tell which liquids are thicker and which are thinner using the concept of viscosity?
3. How do you explain your results based on the intermolecular forces that exist in the liquids you
tested?
4. Which liquid is the most viscous? Least viscous?
