A PETITION FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO MITIGATE LOCAL

VEHICULAR TRAFFIC CONGESTION DURING THE 2017 TOURIST SEASON
From: The Residents, Visitors, and Business owners of Anna Maria Island, Bradenton, Cortez,
Longboat Key, and Sarasota Florida.
To: The Local, Regional, and State Officials and Agencies responsible for the administration,
public safety, and enjoyment of the cities and towns mentioned above.
We, the undersigned, are not content to await the results of yet another traffic study, the
results of which will not be available until 2019.
We respectfully demand that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), in cooperation
with the Sarasota / Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and local Mayors and
Chiefs of Police take immediate and proactive action to institute pilot programs (temporary
solutions) during peak traffic hours of the 2017 tourist season. None of these temporary solutions
require new or modified infrastructures:

119th Street at Cortez Road Manual control of the traffic signal and a continuous
always-green eastbound lane from Cortez Bridge.
Manually controlled and / or more efficient traffic and pedestrian light timing John
Ringling Causeway at Tamiami Trail, John Ringling Causeway at Sunset Drive / Golden
Gate Point, Ken Thompson Parkway and Longboat Club Road at Gulf of Mexico Drive,
and Fruitville Road at Tamiami Trail.
St Armands Circle Pedestrian control, bypass routes, and temporary elimination of
several parking spaces from 3:00 PM 7:00 PM.
Local Barrier Island Bridges Prohibit bridge openings for training, testing, and
maintenance from 7:00 AM 7:00 PM.

The purpose of these pilot programs is to mitigate short-term traffic congestion, test the efficacy
of each program, and then develop and institute longer-term solutions as part of the new traffic
study.
Please return all completed petitions by January 14, 2017 to the LBK Task Force, P O Box 8711,
Longboat Key, FL 34228. Thank you.
