SEQUENCE OF LESSON
Students Will Change into PE Gear and
come to the big gym.
Welcome
Hello ladies and gentlemen, I hope everyone
had a great break, today we will be working on
the bump and the set in the game of volleyball.
Focus of the Day: Today we are going to
acknowledge the rules of volleyball, along with
the two most common skills, the bump and the
set, as well as how and when to use them.

Safety: Since we are in the big gym we are

going to have a lot of space to spread out and
practice these skills. With that said it does not
mean we will be out of control when we are
bumping and setting the ball. It means we will
do it in a controlled manner in our space.
Another safety protocol is that we are not going
to be running under the net, if we have to go to
the other side we will be going around. Also, we
will not be throwing the ball over the net if we
lose a point, we will be rolling it under in order to
avoid people getting hit by the ball. Finally today
we will not be spiking the ball, the focus is the
bump and the set so if you spike the ball you will
first get a warning and after the second offense
you will be asked to sit out.

Informing Volleyball Set and Bump
The set and the bump are the two most
common skills, they are the bare basics of
volleyball and are extremely useful if they are
used correctly. The bump is used when the ball
is served over the net in order to control the ball,
it is usually followed by a set which sets the
hitter up for a spike to hit the ball over the net.

Refining the Bump

1. Begin in athletic stance
a. Bend knees
slightly
2. Place your dominant hand in your
non dominant hand, cupping the
dominant hand with the non dominant
3. Put your thumbs together
4. Move from your legs, stabilize
your shoulders.
a. Do not swing your
arms without moving your legs.
5. Try to hit the ball using your
forearms.
Refining the Set
1. Slightly bend knees
2. Hit the ball using two hands using
your fingertips, pushing the ball upward.
a. Do not catch the
ball because it will be ruled a
carry.
Why would you use the bump over the set?
You would use the set when you are setting up
a player to hit the ball over the net, you would
use the bump when you are trying to control the
ball below your shoulders.
Demonstration:
I will ask a student to volunteer to demonstrate
the bump a couple times while I reiterate the
cues for the bump by using the students as an
example
I will then ask a student to volunteer to

Refining Rules of Volleyball
The rules of volleyball include:
1. You can only hit the ball one time
in a row.
2. Your team has three chances to
get the ball over the net.
3. You may not hold the ball.
4. Games will be played for 5
minutes at a time
5. No Spiking.

Transition:
Students will transition from the meeting place
to the line to begin a warm up
Warm-up:
Students will spread out on the line in two
groups, one in front one in back (when they all
go at once it is hard to hold all 30 students
accountable for actually doing the warm up) and
will do as I say.
1. This may include: (all portions will
be demonstrated as I say them)
a. Run across the
court and back
b. High knees
c. Butt kicks
d. Soldier walks
e. Toe touches
f. Skips
Transition: Students will transition to the
original area while I go over and
demonstrate activity 1.
Demonstration of activity.
I will demonstrate the activity with a student.
Activity 1: Partner Passing (Bump)
Students will get a partner they work well with
and a ball and will stand at a pair of cones. One
student will pass the ball in the air using an
underhand toss no higher than 2x the receiving

person's height, and the receiving student will

bump the ball back to the passer. The students
will continue to do this, switching every 10
passes until they get clearance to extend to the
next phase.
The next phase will have the students bumping
the ball back and forth to each other seeing how
many passes they can make in a row. They will
not catch the ball unless it is out of reach.
Extension Up: Allowing students to go to the
next phase
Extension Down: Keeping students at phase
one.
Transition: Students will immediately freeze
and put the ball on the ground. They will wait for
further instruction.
Demonstration of activity.
I will demonstrate the activity with a student.
Activity 1.33 Partner Passing (Set)
Students will get a partner they work well with
and a ball and will stand at a pair of cones. One
student will pass the ball in the air no higher
than 2x the receiving person's height, and the
receiving student will set the ball back to the
passer. The students will continue to do this,
switching every 10 passes until they get
clearance to extend to the next phase.
The next phase will have the students setting
the ball back and forth to each other seeing how
many passes they can make in a row. They will
not catch the ball unless it is out of reach.
Extension Up: Allowing students to go to the
next phase
Extension Down: Keeping students at phase
one.
Transition: Students will immediately freeze
and put the ball on the ground. They will wait for
further instruction.
Demonstration of activity.

Activity 1.66 Partner Passing (Bump and Set)
Students will get a partner they work well with
and a ball and will stand at a pair of cones. One

student will pass the ball in the air no higher

than 2x the receiving person's height, and the
receiving student will bump the ball back to the
passer. The passer will then set the ball back to
the receiver and the receiver will catch the ball.
This will continue until the students have
clearance to go the second phase. The second
phase will be the same as the first however the
students will not catch the ball, they will rally
until the ball touches the ground.
Extension Up: Allowing students to go to the
next phase
Extension Down: Keeping students at phase
one.
Transition
Students will pick up their equipment and
transition from the activity to the original
meeting place where they will receive
instructions from me as to what to do in the next
activity.
Demonstration of activity.
Prior to gameplay I will ask team 1 and 2 to
demonstrate only using the bump and the set
while playing to make sure everyone
understands the concept.
Activity 2 Modified Volleyball Round Robin.
Students will be broken up into teams by
numbering off. Team 1 will play team 2 on court
1 and team 3 will play team 4 on court two.
There will be 6 players on the court at a time so
there will be one substitute who will rotate into
the game as the squad rotates. The person
coming in will become the server and the
students will rotate clockwise (the front right will
become the substitute).
The games will be played for 10 minutes and
teams will then switch.
To make the game modified and practice the
skills, students will only be allowed to bump or
set the ball. If a person spikes the ball or does
anything other than bump or set the ball, there
will be a penalty of -1 points applied to their
team.

Extension Up: Only allow the students to bump

or set the ball.
Extension Down: Allow a 4 hit maximum per
team.
Transition: Team 1 will play team 3 while team
2 plays team 4
52-62
64-74

Activity 2 Continued:
Transition and game play will go on until all
teams have played each other.

74-77

Closure:
I will ask the students to grab any equipment
they used and make sure nothing is left in the
gymnasium.
Teacher will review the bump and the set by
asking a student to demonstrate each while I
reinform the skill cues.
I will then ask questions to the students.
Question 1:
What type of hit would you do if the ball is below
your shoulders?
Above?
Question 2:
When you bump the ball what is the most
important thing to remember.
1. Use your legs!!!
Students will not have an assessment to
complete because the video will provide
tangible evidence.
Students will then be dismissed to change.
