Emergencies are the conditions which people are most afraid of and the least prepared for. Being
prepared with a little knowlege of homeopathic remedies can prevent a worse problem from
developing in an emergency and even cure the problem. This is a wonderful power in the realm
of self healing.
There are many acute disorders and emergency situations. Some are caused by an illness or
accident, others are caused by man-made toxins, and still others are caused by conventional
medical drugs and procedures.
It's very healthy to avoid medical drugs and procedures whenever possible because they tend to
cause what they call "side-effects." These are actually iatrogenic disorders, disorders caused by
the medical treatment itself. Sometimes these are impossible to avoid because one finds oneself
in a situation where the benefits of modern medicine or surgery are needed. But, too many
patients are conditioned to believe that drugs and knives are the only recourse because the
authority-figure Doctor says so. Whatever the case, there are homeopathic remedies that will
either prevent the need for "drugs and knives" or cure the problems they cause.
Being self-sufficient in dealing with acute disorders that are not life threatening is very possible
if you pay careful attention. I will give you the homeopathic information to do this.
But please understand that for chronic health problems, one needs to consult a true classical
homeopath. You may also prefer to consult with a homeopath for your acute problems. You can
contact me for treatment of all these problems.

The recommended potencies are listed for each indicated homeopathic remedy. The dosing per
day is dependent upon the individuals symptoms and responses. See Homeopathic Guidelines for
more on this.

First Response Homeopathy Remedies to Use in a Disaster (Part 1)

Floods, wars, famines, accidents, earthquakes.

Hardly a day goes by without a disaster making headlines somewhere they are an inescapable
part of life and whether natural or manmade have always been with us.
Were often transfixed by the media reports of chaos visited on others but for those caught up in
the disaster it may mean injuries and sickness, destruction of property, loss of loved ones,
starvation, and displacement. Long after the physical wounds have healed, emotional trauma
remains.

Homoeopathy is front-line medicine at its best. It has much to offer the victims of disaster and
those who rush to their aid. It is inexpensive, easily distributed, able to be safely used before
other medical help arrives, and can then used beside it without interactive effects.
Over the next three articles we will look at the remedies traditionally used in homeopathy to
reduce the impact of physical injuries, soften emotional trauma, and lessen the risk of epidemic
disease.
We will show you how to compile an emergency homeopathy kit, teach you how to use it and
explain how its remedies can be stretched to not only help you but others, also.
In this, our first article, learn the remedies homeopaths use for the initial problems of shock, fear,
hysteria, and injuries.
Find out about the corpse reviver, why homeopathic opium is considered a fantastic treatment
for shock, and how the London Police Force used homeopathic gunpowder as a remedy for
infections, boils and abscesses.
And, if you ever have the misfortune to be caught in a disaster situation remember the ABCs of
first aid check and maintain the persons Airway, Breathing and Circulation and certainly call
for help.

First Response Remedies

Shock
Emotional shock is the bodys response to extreme fear, stress, pain, or helplessness. It is also
known as acute stress reaction. Symptoms include: disorientation; confusion; agitation;
restlessness; and feeling dazed.
Two key homeopathic remedies for this type of shock are Aconite and Opium.
Aconite napellus (Acon.): Aconite is used when the person is agitated, restless, fearful and
anxious (or even in a state of terror) and convinced they will die. It is capable of relieving not
only these mental-emotional symptoms but other symptoms that may be present at the same time
such as chest pain from an impending heart attack (myocardial infarction) or convulsions.
Opium (Op.): The homeopathic remedy prepared from opium is more useful for emotional
shock in which the person looks and acts like a stunned mullet. They are withdrawn, respond
poorly to what is happening around them, and have a dazed, besotted expression. Be aware
though that in some countries you will not be able to obtain homeopathic opium as regulators of
these countries, unfamiliar with the extreme dilutions of homoeopathic remedies, confuse
homeopathic opium with its crude source and so classify it as an illegal substance.

Guidelines: Either remedy can be given as often as every 15 seconds if the persons symptoms
are severe. Once symptoms start to settle only give another dose when improvement stops or
symptoms start to return. If there is no improvement by 3 doses, stop, as this means the remedy
is incorrect choose another remedy that better matches the symptoms. As long as the person is
improving with each dose, the remedy can be given as often as needed and for as long as is
needed.

Hysteria and Panic

Following shock, panic and hysteria are the next most common reactions to emotional trauma.
People may shriek, scream, have rapidly changing emotions, sob convulsively, hyperventilate, or
frantically clutch at others for help. Two remedies to help reduce panic and hysteria are Aconite
and Ignatia.
Aconite napellus (Acon.): Those needing Aconite, as already mentioned, will be extremely
restless and agitated, fearing they are about to die. They are likely to have palpitations and will
hyperventilate, producing symptoms of pins and needles and numbness throughout the body.
Ignatia amara (Ign.): Ignatia is used for rapidly changing moods and crying with sobbing. The
person may hyperventilate, twitch, jerk, have cramps and display contradictory, unpredictable
behaviour. They will pull away from comfort and reassurance and may sweat from the face.
As long as the person is
improving with each dose, the remedy can be given as often as needed and for as long as is
needed.

Injuries, Wounds and Hazardous Effects

Allium cepa (All-c.): When eyes and nose are streaming from some sort of irritant. Burning
discharge from the nose, bland discharge from the eyes. A good remedy to counter the effects of
tear gas. (Also see Euphrasia.)
Arnica Montana (Arn.): For bruising and damage to soft tissues such as skin and muscles.
Slows bleeding, reduces swelling, promotes healing, helps with shock and reduces the risk of
infection. Ideal as a first remedy for broken bones (fractures) that cause bleeding and swelling
into the tissues (use Bryonia for fractured ribs or Symphytum after 24 hours when swelling and
bleeding is no longer a problem). Do not use in herbal form if skin is broken as it will irritate; it
is safe to use in homeopathic potencies.

Bryonia (Bry.): Fractures such as fractured ribs when the pain is worse for the slightest
movement (breathing) and better for firm pressure or being supported.
Calendula (Calen.): Useful for superficial wounds, grazes and lacerated skin promotes
healing and reduces the risk of infection. Can be taken by mouth or applied topically (directly on
the skin). To apply topically, place 10 drops of the herbal tincture or potentised remedy into a cup
of water, cleanse the wound and then bind with a dressing moistened with the solution. Leave the
dressing intact for as long as possible but keep it moist with the solution to speed healing and
stop infection.
Cantharis (Canth.): A key remedy for 2nd to 3rd degree burns where there is severe pain and
even blistering of the skin. (See Urtica urens for 1st and 2nd degree burns, Causticum for chemical
burns, and Phosphorus for electrical burns.)
Causticum (Caust.): A useful remedy for deep burns and chemical burns. (See Urtica urens
for 1st and 2nd degree burns, Cantharis for 2nd and 3rd degree burns, and Phosphorus for electrical
burns.)
China officinalis (Chin.): Relieves exhaustion and debility that follows the loss of body
fluids such as blood, sweat and diarrheoa.
Carbo vegetabilis (Carb-v.): This remedy has the reputation of being a corpse reviver among
homeopaths. It treats many near-death states with the following symptoms: faintness; collapse;
exhaustion; chilliness; cold sweat; gasping for air; wanting to be fanned; flatulence and
distension; heart failure; blue or mottled skin. (Also see Laurocerasus.)
Euphrasia (Euphr.): When eyes and nose are streaming from an irritant. Bland discharge from
the nose, burning discharge from the eyes. A good remedy to counter the effects of tear gas.
(Also see Allium cepa.)
Gunpowder (Gunp.): Used in its crude form in the past by soldiers and the London Police
Force (of all people) to fight infection, homeopathic gunpowder is still an excellent remedy
today to prevent boils and abscesses developing in cuts and wounds.
Hypericum perforatum (Hyper.): For injuries to nerves and nerve rich areas such as finger
tips and the spine. Numbness and tingling. Pains shoot upwards along the nerve pathways. Also
helpful for lacerations and puncture wounds.
Laurocerasus (Laur.): A good remedy for lack of reaction when the heart and /or respiratory
system is in failure. The person may: be in a state of collapse; have chilliness that is unhelped
by warmth; be gasping for breath or suffocating; and be blue or mottled. (Also see Carbo
vegetabilis.)

Ledum palustre (Led.): Main remedy for mottled puncture wounds. Useful for sprained and
twisted joints.
Natrum sulphuricum (Nat-s): For concussion and head injuries that potentially involve brain
damage or bleeding into the brain. Also useful for some types of spinal injury.
Phosphorus (Phos.): The main remedy for electrical burns or electroshock. (See Urtica urens
for 1st and 2nd degree burns, Cantharis for 2nd and 3rd degree burns, and Causticum for chemical
burns.)
Staphysagria (Staph.): Especially useful for cuts and incisions that have clean rather than
jagged edges. Promotes healing and reduces the risk of infection. Also helps the person process
emotions following violations such as rape.
Symphytum officinale (Symph.): Known as the Arnica of the eye. Helpful when the eyeball
has been punctured, ruptured or damaged. Also used in the ongoing repair of fractures.
Urtica urens (Urt-u): Main remedy for 1st and 2nd degree burns that sting, burn and possibly
itch. An unusual symptom is that the burn may feel worse for cold water. (See Cantharis for 2nd
and 3rd degree burns, Causticum for chemical burns, and Phosphorus for electrical burns.)
X-ray: Minimises genetic damage following exposure to radiation.

Dosage Guidelines
Remedies can be used in any potency from 6C to 200C but remember, good results depend on
getting the remedy right rather than getting the potency right. If none of the above potencies are
available, dose with whatever one you have on hand. Because homeopathy is an intrinsically safe
system of medicine, free of toxic effects, no harm will be done.
How often to dose will depend on the intensity of the persons symptoms and how quickly they
respond to the remedy. Initial doses may be needed as often as every 15 seconds or at intervals of
several hours. To find out more about dosing, read: How Often Should I Take a Dose of My
Remedy.

First Response Homeopathy Remedies to Use in a Disaster (Part 2)

Disaster has struck. Panic and shock are now subsiding. The immediate threat is over.
Those caught in the disaster are literally starting to pick up the pieces of their lives and
possessions.
Homoeopathy is front-line medicine at its best. It has much to offer the victims of disaster and
those who rush to their aid. It is inexpensive, easily distributed, able to be safely used before
other medical help arrives, and can then used beside it without interactive effects.
Over our three First Response articles we will look at remedies traditionally used
in homeopathy to reduce the impact of physical injuries, soften emotional trauma, and lessen the
risk of epidemic disease.
We also show you how to compile an emergency homeopathy kit, teach you how to use it and
explain how its remedies can be stretched to not only help you but others, also.

Moving on to the Next Stage

Once the immediate threat is over, anger, accusations, grief and ongoing fear grip many and raw
emotions may bubble to the surface.
Perhaps the most striking thing that outsiders witness, though, is the compassion and support
people give to each in the middle of what seems an insurmountable tragedy.
Physical injuries that were not seen as severe at the height of the disaster now need attention and
the spread of disease has to be prevented.
Even here, homoeopathy, with its easy production and distribution of remedies should have a key
role to play with problems as diverse as gangrene, sunstroke, boils and abscesses.
The following is a summary of remedies and their traditional indications for the symptoms and
complaints seen in the second stage of a disaster.

Fear, Anxiety and Despair

Argentum nitricum (Arg-n): Anticipatory anxiety with strange fears or phobias. May become
claustrophobic or agoraphobic. Wants company but anxious in a crowd. Fears losing control.

leading to exhaustion. Controlling behaviour of others and circumstances. Anxiety worse after
midnight.
Gelsemium (Gels.): Anxiety with weakness and trembling. Needs support when standing; knees
shake. Heaviness of eyelids and drowsiness. Wants to be alone.
Stramonium (Stram.): Symptoms usually develop after a frightful experience. Violence
towards others from fear of being attacked or hurt. May hit, scratch, kick or bite (children
especially). Fear of the dark. Feel much better in company and light.
Comments: If shock, panic or hysteria are still present, refer back to Part 1 for helpful remedies.

to answer. Intolerant of others especially if they are perceived as being too slow or doing
inappropriate things. Overindulgence in stimulants or alcohol.
Staphysagria (Staph.): Suppressed anger and indignation following humiliation, insult or
violation. also a key go to remedy for rape victims during disaster or war.

Injuries and Wounds

Many of the first aid and emergency remedies suggested in Part 1 may still be useful during this
mopping up stage. For example:
Broken bones (fractures): See Arnica montana, Bryonia alba, or Symphytum. (Part 1)
Concussion or brain injury: See Natrum sulphuricum. (Part 1)
Bruising and damage to soft tissues: See Arnica Montana. (Part 1)
Superficial wounds, grazes and lacerated skin: See Calendula or Hypericum. (Part 1)

Puncture wounds: See Hypericum or Ledum palustre. (Part 1)
Chemical, electrical or 1st, 2nd or 3rd degree burns: See Urtica urens, Causticum, Cantharis or
Phosphorus. (Part 1)
Sprained or twisted joints: See Ledum palustre. (Part 1).
Additional helpful remedies are:
Bryonia alba (Bry.): Pain that is worse for the slightest movement. Better for firm strapping,
pressure, or lying on the affected part. Useful for fractures, especially fractured ribs.

Silicea (Sil.): Abscesses that drain but dont heal. Splinter-like pains. Chilly and worse for cold.

Bites and Stings

In many disaster situations, animals and snakes are displaced just as much as humans. Once out
of their natural habitat, bites and stings are more likely. When this happens, the following
remedies should be considered.
Aconite napellus (Acon.): Rapid, intense symptoms following bite or sting. Restlessness,
anxiety and fear that they might die. Very thirsty.
Apis mellifica (Apis.): The site of the sting will be puffy. Swelling will be warm and white or
rosy pink in colour. Prickling, stinging pains that are improved by cold applications.

animals or insects. Wound swollen, cold, and discoloured. Pain improved by cold applications.
Cantharis (Canth.): Intense burning pain following insect bites such as from wasps.

Gangrene
Tissue gangrene occurs from infection, crush injuries, obstructed circulation and frostbite. The
correct homeopathic remedy minimises damage and aids recovery.
Anthracinum (Anthr.): Intense burning pains with offensive discharges and blue-black blisters.
Restlessness leading to exhaustion.
Arsenicum album (Ars.): Burning pains that feel better for warmth. Restless, anxious and
chilly. Thirsty for small sips.

fanned cannot get enough air. Frequent belching. Exhaustion and breathlessness.
Crotalus horridus (Crot-h.): Rapid spread with offensive odour. Swollen limb. Blackish
blisters. Right side of body feels tender. Easy weeping.

Sunburn or Heat/Sun Stroke

Working in extreme temperatures or facing sun exposure after the destruction of shelter can leave
both victims and helpers at risk of sunburn or sun and heat stroke.
The following remedies can be considered for the pain of simple sunburn plus the fever,
vomiting, weakness, cramping, diarrhoea and delirium of sun or heat stroke.
Apis mellifica (Apis.): Swelling of the tissues (oedema) with stinging, prickly pain. Better for
cold applications. Worse for warmth. Reduced urine output. Drowsiness or irritability.

Urtica urens (Urt-u.): Simple sunburn with stinging, burning or itching pain. Better for lying
down. Worse for touch and after sleep.

Exhaustion and Collapse

Its not just those involved in the disaster who are affected. Those who rush to help may work
themselves to the point of collapse. See Part 1 for details on remedies such as China officinalis,
Carbo vegetabilis and Laurocerasus for exhaustion arising from physical injury or disease.
Additional remedies to consider are:
Arsenicum album (Ars.): Restlessness leading to exhaustion. Anxious and afraid to be alone.
Fear of death or disease. Controlling behaviour of others and circumstances.

sleep. Confused and under-confident. Cant bear to see or hear of cruelties or horrible things.
Cocculus indicus (Cocc.): Symptoms such as numbness, twitching, dizziness, confusion and
exhaustion especially following loss of sleep from caring for others.

fluids. Slow to answer and unable to think of words. Silent suffering want to be alone. Lack of
energy. Exhausted.

Disease Prevention
Damaged infrastructure, polluted water, lack of sanitation, and decaying matter all encourage the
spread of disease. Whether it be a simple diarrhoea or a more serious epidemic disease such as
cholera, homeopathy has a history of helping with prevention as well as treatment.
Nosodes, for example remedies made from the diseased tissue or discharge are regularly
used for prevention. Many can be obtained from homeopathic pharmacies or, if time is of the
essence, can be made on site by rapidly potentising the source material. (If you have to resort to
this, remember to take all precautions until the remedy has been fully potentised so you dont
become infected yourself).
The other option is to choose the standard homeopathic remedy that best matches the symptoms
of the disease for which prevention is sought.
Both nosodes and standard remedies are listed below. Either can be used preventatively ahead of
an outbreak but if an epidemic is already in progress, the genus epidemicus the remedy that

best matches the characteristic symptoms of the outbreak will produce the best results. That
remedy may be one of those listed or a different one altogether.
Amoebic dysentery: Arsenicum album (Ars.) or nosode.
Anthrax: Anthracinum (Anthr.).
Bubonic plague: Baptisia tinctoria (Bapt.) or nosode.
Chickenpox: Antimonium crudum (Ant-c.) or Pulsatilla pratensis (Puls.) or Rhus toxicodendron
(Rhus-t.) or nosode.
Cholera: Cuprum metallicum (Cupr.) or Camphor(Camph.) or Veratrum album (Verat.) or
nosode.
Diphtheria: Mercurius cyanatus (Merc-cy.) or nosode.
Hepatitis: Phosphorus (Phos.) or Chelidonium majus (Chel.) or nosode.
Hydrophobia: Belladonna (Bell.) or nosode.
Influenza: Gelsemium semervirens (Gels.) or Arsenicum album (Ars.) or Rhus toxicodendron
(Rhus-t.) or Eupatorium perfoliatum (Eup-per.) or nosode.
Lyme disease: Ledum palustre or nosode.
Malaria: Cinchona (Cinch.) or Arsenicum album (Ars.) or Natrum muriaticum (Nat-m.) or
nosode.
Measles: Pulsatilla pratensis (Puls.) or Aconite napellus (Acon.) or Arsenicum album (Ars.) or
nosode.
Meningitis or Encephalitis: Belladonna (Bell.) or nosode.
Mumps: Mercurius vivus (Merc-v.) or Phytolacca decandra (Phyt.) or nosode.
Polio: Lathyrus sativa (Lath.) or Plumbum metallicum (Plb.) or nosode.
Puerperal fever: Pyrogenium (Pyr.) or nosode.
Scarlet fever: Belladonna (Bell.) or nosode.
Small pox: Malandrinum (Maland.) or nosode.

Tetanus: Tetanus toxinum (Tetan.) or Cicuta virosa (Cic.) Hypericum perforatum (Hyper.) or
Magnesium phosphoricum (Mag-p.).
Typhus: Rhus toxicodendron (Rhus-t.) or Baptisia tinctoria (Bapt.) or nosode.
Tuberculosis: Drosera rotundifolia (Dros.) or nosode.
Typhoid: Baptisia tinctoria (Bapt.) or nosode.
[REDACTED]
Yellow fever: Crotalus horridus (Crot-h.) or Carbo vegetabilis (Carb-v.) or Arsenicum album
(Ars.) or nosode.

Dosage Guidelines
Remedies can be used in any potency from 6C to 200C; good results are dependent on getting
the remedy right more than using a certain potency.
If none of the above potencies are on hand, dose with whatever is available knowing that
homeopathy has an excellent safety record with non-addictive and non-toxic remedies.
How often a dose of the chosen remedy should be given will depend on the intensity of the
persons symptoms and how quickly they respond. Initial doses may be needed as often as every
5 minutes or at intervals of several hours. To find out more about dosing, read: How Often
Should I Take a Dose of My Remedy.

First Response Homeopathy Remedies to Use in a Disaster (Part 3)

Post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) may not be as obvious as piles of rubble or burnt houses,
but survivors of disaster and emergency situations can struggle to come to terms with the
emotional turmoil for years.
To conclude our series on First Response Homeopathy well look at some of the remedies that
bring emotional healing for the psychological tr

auma inflicted by disasters.

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD is an anxiety disorder caused by either seeing, or being involved in, an emotionally
traumatic event. PSTD may occur immediately after the event or many months later.
Sufferers of PSDT often relive the event by going over and over it in their mind or through
unwanted flashbacks and dreams. They may become emotionally numb, lose interest in daily
activities and have a sense of hopelessness or extreme anxiety about the future. Concentration is
difficult, sleep disorders are common and the person may be oversensitive or irritable to stimuli
or people.
Sufferers can develop depression or anxiety-related symptoms such as agitation, dizziness,
palpitations, sweatiness and dryness of mouth. Survivor guilt (feeling guilty about what
happened) is common.
Not everyone who has lived through a disaster will experience PTSD it depends on physical
and psychological make-up, past experiences, the intensity of the trauma, and the amount of
social support a person can call upon following the event.

General Treatment
Standard methods of helping people with PTSD include counselling, support groups, and antianxiety medications or sedatives. Some sufferers of PTSD turn to illicit drugs or alcohol as a way
to self-medicate, but all drugs, whether recreational, legal or illegal, have dangerous or addictive
side-effects.
Support groups and certain counselling approaches are much safer and, surprisingly, can even
have a homoeopathic effect on the problem. Homeopathy is not just about remedies, but
encompasses anything that produces similar feelings or effects to the symptoms being treated.
For example, when a person is encouraged to revisit a traumatic event during counselling or in a
group, a therapeutic like treats like (homeopathic effect) takes place. It is much more helpful
than suppressing symptoms through medication or living in denial. Neither of the last two
approaches bring deep healing, but often worsen health.

Homeopathic Help
Homoeopathy has numerous remedies that help with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Lets
look at some of them and the types of experiences they can be used for.
Ericas Story: Anxiety and Panic Attacks
Five years ago, Erica lost her home and everything she owned to a bushfire. She had always been
a nervous person but since the trauma of that event her anxiety intensified. She was unable to

sleep through the night and would wander around the house at all hours, preparing for the day
ahead. She also suffered burning pain in her stomach which certainly wasnt conducive to a good
nights sleep. Her family said she had become a hypochondriac and neat-freak, and that she was
overly critical. Erica just wanted everything to be right. She lived in fear of something
happening to her family and of once again losing her possessions. Panic attacks began to plague
her. The first was in the middle of the night and she was rushed to hospital with everyone
thinking it was a heart attack. Since then, Ericas family had been telling her that she must do
more to relax; Erica felt like screaming at them.
If only Erica and her family had known about Arsenicum album (Ars.) earlier! It can be a
fantastic remedy for post-traumatic stress disorder when the following symptoms are present:
Anxiety, restlessness, fussiness, irritability, and discontentment. Feelings of insecurity. Anxiety
about what may happen to them or family members. Fear of being alone. Excessive dependence
on others. Not easily reassured. Panic attacks and anxiety about health matters real or
imagined. Worries about finances or poverty. Highly fastidious everything has to be neat and
organised or anxiety becomes overwhelming. Symptoms worse between 12 midnight and 2am.
Sleeplessness from anxiety. Chilliness. Physical complaints with burning pains better for
warmth. Common complaints: gastritis, stomach or duodenal ulcers, anorexia, asthma,
Raynauds disease, and cancer.
With a single dose of Arsenicum album, Ericas anxiety began to soften. Appropriate follow-up
doses resolved her symptoms further and Erica returned to a more comfortable and satisfying
life.
Michaels Story: Theyd Be Better Off Without Me.
Michael was the driver in a car crash, killing his young son Ryan and two occupants of the other
car. He still carries the grief of the event, but throws himself into his work where he is a valued
and reliable employee. Only his wife Kelly knows that his seriousness and strong sense of
responsibility mask the depression and guilt that have dogged him since the accident. What she
doesnt know, though, is that Michael thinks everyone would be better off without him and has
made tentative plans to take his own life.
A remedy that could help Michael is Aurum metallicum (Aur.). It is commonly used to treat the
following symptoms:
Depression from grief, failure or shame. Deep depression. Joylessness. Suicidal depression
may think of jumping from a height, or driving into oncoming traffic. Often have strong religious
convictions and desire for prayer or meditation. Imagine they have failed or neglected their duty.

Thoughts of death are pleasant. Tendency to heart problems. Symptoms are worse at night,
especially pains in the bones. Moaning or crying out in sleep.
Note: Deep depression is a serious disorder. Should you suspect that a friend or family member
is severely depressed, encourage them to seek the help and support of a trusted health
professional as soon as possible.
Weis Story: Angered by Injustice
Wei arrived in this country seven years ago as a refugee. He had escaped corruption and
persecution in his own country but not before his family home had been burnt to the ground and
his parents beaten because of Weis involvement in a protest against the oppressive regime. He
received very little news from his parents and had become increasingly angry. He was wellknown in his local community for his work with other refugees, but his friends were concerned
about his increasing belligerence about stupid rules and regulations and towards those in
positions of authority. They wanted him to take a break from his work before he ended up in
trouble again.
It is likely that Weis reaction to his past experiences would be helped with a remedy called
Causticum (Caust). While several Causticum symptoms seem admirable at first glance, they can
result in states of imbalance or excess. It is a remedy for those who are:
Idealistic and sympathetic. Intolerant of injustice become worried, angry or anxious. Fight for
others and for causes. Defiant towards authority. Health complaints often involve stiffness,
numbness, tingling or paralysis. Anxiety develops in the evening and with the dark. Craves
smoked food. Feels better in rainy weather.
Carmens Story: Indifference and Apathy
Carmen lived through a home invasion. She had been watching TV with her husband and two
children when three unknown men burst through the door waving knives and screaming
obscenities. Carmens husband tried to stop them but was knocked to the ground and a knife
placed at his throat. Carmen was terrified. She immediately told them where their money and
valuables were kept. When they finally left, Carmen collapsed to the floor. Now, three months
later and in spite of intensive counselling, Carmen is struggling to recover from the incident.
While initially traumatised and anxious, she is now apathetic and indifferent. She finds it almost
impossible to get out of bed in the morning and returns to it as soon as her husband and children
have left for the day. She loves her children but finds them emotionally exhausting. She is
frequently irritable and snappy. Her husband says he has lost the wife he once loved and their
marriage is feeling the strain.

The impact of the home invasion has pushed Carmen into what homoeopaths call a Sepia state.
Sepia (Sep.) can help when someone is:
Joyless and indifferent, even to loved ones. Drained of emotional and physical energy. While
symptoms are often improved by vigorous activity in early stages, eventually everything
becomes too much of an effort. Dread of being alone but also dislike of company. Snappy and
irritable or silent and tearful. Dislikes being comforted. Craves chocolate and sour things such as
lemons or vinegar. Feels energised by thunderstorms. Menstrual periods often painful or heavy.
Chriss Story: One Disaster Too Many
Chris had been part of a recovery team sent from Australia to help in the aftermath of an
earthquake. It was the sort of work he had done before, but this time it felt different. Back at
home, he was struggling to return to a normal life. Whenever he looked at the happiness and
relative security of his own family, images would flash before his eyes of the ruined lives he had
left behind. Chriss wife didnt know what to do. Her husband was known for his caring attitude
and strong sense of social responsibility, but this time he wasnt coping. Whenever she tried to
discuss the situation with him he would change the subject or leave the room. He was reluctant to
go back to work and was becoming increasingly withdrawn and troubled.
Chriss reaction to his latest assignment sounds similar to the Carcinosin (Carc.) symptom
pattern. Carcinosin can help bring excesses back into balance when someone is:
Very sympathetic. Cares for others. Strong sense of responsibility tends to take on too much.
Sensitive to criticism and easily hurt. Feels guilty about his or her own troubles or sickness.
Moved by sad stories. Depression from other peoples problems or prolonged fear and abuse.
Loves chocolate, animals, thunderstorms, travel and being by the sea.

Self or Practitioner Treatment?

The immediate problems of injury, shock, panic, exposure and poisoning that follow a disaster
can frequently be helped by anyone with a working knowledge of homeopathy. These are the
situations discussed in Part 1 and Part 2 of this series.
Chronic emotional problems linked to post-traumatic stress disorders are better managed by a
qualified homeopath. A course of treatment with changes in potencies and remedies is likely to
be needed something that is beyond the scope of a home-use kit.
Whether by self-treatment or qualified help, homeopathy has a lot to offer victims in the wake of
a disaster. We recommend the following remedies for a basic emergency kit so that you can be
well-prepared in case of disaster.

Dosage Guidelines
For acute problems, remedies can be used in any potency from 6C to 200C but remember, good
results are more dependent on getting the remedy right rather than getting the potency right. If
none of the above potencies are on hand, dose with whatever one you have available. Because
homeopathy is an intrinsically safe system of medicine free of toxic effects, no harm will be
done.
How often to dose will depend on the intensity of the persons symptoms and how quickly they
respond to the remedy. Initial doses may be needed as often as every 5 minutes or at intervals of
several hours. To find out more about dosing, read: How Often Should I Take a Dose of My
Remedy.

suffocated, as if the throat is plugged or the breathing passages are dry. Problems are usually
made worse from being in a room that is too warm, or from lying down with the head too low.
Talking aggravates the cough, and so does exposure to cold air and smoke. Sitting up usually
helps, and drinking something warm or eating small amounts brings some relief. This
remedy is often helpful during croup and asthma.

Stannum Loose cough, with heavy, green, sweet or salty sputum. Sensation of great weakness

night, must stick them out from under the covers. Worse bathing.

Veratrum Album (Verat.)

Extreme coldness, blueness and weakness. Pale face. Painful diarrhea followed by great weakness.

Bryonia: This, in my experience, is one of the most frequently indicated flu medicines. The
emphasis is on the fact that motion exacerbates the symptoms, and the person prefers, therefore,
to remain quiet and still. There is often headache, dry cough and body aches, all of which
become aggravated by moving around. The person can be irritable, and doesnt mind if he/she is
left alone. The person is usually chilly, and may have chills or a fever spike around 9 p.m. There
tends to be thirst for cold drinks, which the person gulps down at long intervals.
Gelsemium: The emphasis here is on drowsiness, sleepiness and fatigue. The person often sleeps
all night, additional hours during the day, and is still exhausted. The person also experiences
chills, complains of being cold and feels achy. There is a notable decrease in the normal level of
thirst. It is as if the person is just too tired to bother to drink. This medicine may be easily
confused with Bryonia, which lies in bed all day because motion aggravates the symptoms.
Gelsemium lies there all day out of sheer fatigue.

Arsenicum: The most telling clue here is the onset of illness in the middle of the night,
especially between 1 and 2 a.m. The person may wake with chills, diarrhea or vomiting at this
time. Likewise, the symptoms may flare up again at the same time the next night. The person is
often anxious, may fear that he/she is seriously ill, and prefers not to be left alone. He/she is
usually quite chilly, and desires frequent small sips of liquid. Unlike the first two medicines, this
one is anxious and restless and is, therefore, not likely to lie still.
Eupatorium: The keynote or telltale symptom here is bone pain. Most flu sufferers complain
of muscle aches, but this medicine is best suited for individuals who literally complain of pain in
their bones aching in the bones as if they are broken. This flu often begins in the morning
with chills first, followed by fever. In spite of feeling cold, there is a desire for cold drinks.
Nux vomica: The person who needs this medicine is very chilly and usually has some type of
digestive complaint like nausea or intestinal cramping pains. The person may be so cold that just
moving the hand to a cool spot on the bed may send chills through the body. Unlike Arsenicum,
which is also quite chilly, this person is usually unafraid.
Rhus tox: This flu may come on after exposure to cold, damp wet weather. Stiffness and pain
causes the person to be restless, tossing and turning in bed. This person frequently changes
position in order to be physically comfortable.
Aconite: The main clue here is the sudden onset of symptoms, usually high fever, especially after
exposure to very cold, dry windy weather. The person is often anxious, and feels worse in a warm
room and worse at night.
Baptisia: This flu is accompanied by a type of delirium. The person may become confused, and
the headache may be stupefying. Reality becomes distorted and the person may experience odd
sensations or say strange things. The person is sore all over and complains that the bed is too
hard or uncomfortable.
Phosphorus: This type of flu can quickly go to the chest. There is a strong desire for large
quantities of cold drinks, and the person prefers to have the company of another person.
Mercurius: The helpful clue here is that the person is alternating hot and cold, like the mercury
in a thermometer. There can also be sore throat, bad breath, bad taste in the mouth and
perspiration. This person tends to smell sick.
Belladonna: The main clue here is a bright red face with sudden onset of high fever often around
3 p.m., as if all the blood has rushed to the head. The person may complain of a pounding or
pulsating type of headache.

Never well since the flu: For some individuals, the effects of a bout with the flu can last for a
very long time. Some may complain, for example, of fatigue and other chronic symptoms.
Constitutional homeopathic treatment can be effective in restoring ones vitality, however, this is
a complex issue that should be handled by a homeopathic professional.
There are a variety of good quality first-aid homeopathic reference books available that can
help one become familiar with the symptom profiles of the medicines. I usually prescribe the
indicated medicine in a 30C or 30X strength (as in Bryonia 30C), although lower potencies (6X,
12X, etc) can also be used. Three to four doses dissolved in the mouth, spread out over the
course of a 24-hour period, for adults and children alike, should be sufficient to elicit a positive
response. Medicine kits that contain commonly indicated homeopathic medicines are also
available for purchase from homeopathic pharmacies.
If the prescription is incorrect there will likely be no effect. If the correct medicine is taken,
improvement may be noted within hours. Initial positive signs may be obvious or more subtle
the person might sit up from the bed, ask for a drink or some food, or wish to engage in some
activity. Once symptoms subside and steady improvement is noted, there is usually no further
need to repeat doses of the medicine. If no progress has been made after 24 hours, another
medicine can be tried in the same manner.
Common cold is a viral infection characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes
lining the upper respiratory passages and usually accompanied by malaise, fever, chills,
coughing, and sneezing.

Common Cold & Flu Homeopathy Treatment & Homeopathic

Remedies
#Aconite [Acon]
When the attack comes on suddenly after an exposure to a cold, dry wind, with chilliness,
followed by fever, Aconite will be the remedy. It should be administered just as soon as the
patient realizes that he is taking cold. There is as yet no discharge, but from the congestion the
nose is swollen, hot, dry and stopped up, and this stoppage is apt to change from side to side;
there is tingling and burning in the nose and a throbbing frontal headache; there may be sneezing
also. These symptoms are all better in the open air. Nux vomica has colds caused by cold
weather, with a dry, stuffed up nose and rough, scrapy throat. In Belladonna there is more
cerebral excitement and swelling in the throat is a prominent symptom. China has headache with
pains, worse in open air, not better, as in Aconite. Ferrum phosphoricum is very similar to
Aconite and may be used when the onset is less sudden and violent and when there is no anxiety
and restlessness. It is also, like Nux and Calcarea carbonica, excellent for predisposition to take
cold.

#Arsenicum [Ars]
is especially useful in winter colds where there is a thin, watery discharge from the nostrils which
excoriates the upper lip, yet in spite of this fluent discharge the nose feels stopped up. There is a
dull, throbbing frontal headache and sneezing, photophobia, and contrary to what one would
expect, the sneezing does not relieve in the slightest and the irritation continues as before and is
worse on going into sir. It corresponds well to patients who are rarely without a cold. These
symptoms of watery discharge and sneezing place Arsenic in the front rank in the treatment of
hay fever. Catarrh based upon a malarial miasm in poorly nourished subjects calls for the
remedy. Arsenic iodide may be found indicated when burning in nose and throat is marked.
Allium cepa has this excoriating nasal discharge also, but, if and anything, there is more
lachrymation, which, by the way, is bland. Sinapis nigra resembles Arsenicum in the heat in the
nose, but with Sinapis there is dryness and no discharge. The discharge of Mercurius, though
excoriating and acrid, is thicker. The cold of Arsenic always settles in the nose, that of
Phosphorus in the chest. The Arsenic patient is chilly and wants to be near the fire all the time;
the nose burns both externally and internally.
#Allium cepa [All-c]
One of our best remedies for cold in the head, indeed, is said by come to be the best, and
probably it is when indicated. The discharge is profuse, thin and acrid, with great smarting in the
nose and eyes, and the distinguishing feature between this remedy and Euphrasia is the profuse
lachrymation which here is bland, and under Euphrasia is excoriating, while the opposite
condition obtains in the nose. Under Allium the edges of the eyelids burn and the eyes are red
and sensitive to light. The nasal discharge is thin and flows constantly, excoriates the upper lip,
and there is prolonged sneezing. A peculiarity of Allium is that the discharge ceases when the
patient goes into the open air, but returns when entering a warm room again. It is a drug Which
should be given early, and if there be a splitting laryngeal cough, causing the patient to wince
and crouch with pain, it is all the more indicated. Farrington, however, claims that Allium is apt
to drive the trouble to the chest, and adds that when it reaches the chest Phosphorus is the
remedy. Arsenic, too, is similar, but Arsenic has sneezing in the cool air after leaving a worm
room, and it lacks the laryngeal symptoms so common in Allium. The Mercurius discharge is
acrid, and not as thin as that of Allium.
#Euphrasia [Euph]
Here the upper part only of the respiratory mucous membrane is affected. Like Allium cepa it has
a copious, fluent discharge from nose, and copious lachrymation, the latter being most acrid,
excoriating the cheeks, and being so profuse as to keep them wet all the time. It differs from
Allium, as we have seen, in the character of the discharge, from the eyes excoriating, from the
nose bland. Euphrasia is often well indicated in the coryzas which precede measles, when there
is a cough which sounds decidedly measly. Eruptions on the wings of the nose.

#Arum triphyllum [Arum-t]

Under Arum all of the secretions are acrid, and there is a discharge if ichorous fluid from the
nose; the nostrils and lips are sore. There may be a discharge from both nose and eyes which is
yellow and acrid. There is thirst, but drinking causes pain. The nostrils are sore, and there is
constant desire to bore the finger into the nose. The nose may be completely stopped up, and at
the same time there is a fluent acrid discharge. Drowsiness and an inclination to sneeze
accompanies. Lycopodium has complete stoppage of the nose night and day, with some
discharge, which may be excoriating. Dryness posteriorly and discharge anteriorly is also
characteristic of Lycopodium.
#Gelsemium [Gels]
This remedy is often underestimated in the early stages of cold in the head. It will break up a
cold at the beginning quicker than any other remedy with these indication: Fullness of the head,
hot fever and chilliness, as if a cold were coming on. The patient is dull and weak, chills run up
and down the back, with a watery, excoriating, or bland discharge form the nose and sneezing.
There is also a marked inclination in the patient to hug the fire. Colds brought on by warm
relaxing weather especially indicate Gelsemium, hence it seems to be most useful in spring and
summer weather, and corresponds well to some epidemic colds. There is a predisposition to take
cold on any change of the weather. It has been found specially useful in influenzas with fever. It
is a remedy that must be used early in the cold. The 1X dilution will often suffice. Lachesis is
often suitable for spring colds and catarrhs, with sensitiveness of throat. Quillaya. In the
incipiency of a cold, with very sore throat, this remedy has been found to be of signal use. Sepia.
Colds at onset of menstruation.
#Nux vomica [Nux-v]
The first stage of ordinary cold in the head may be met by Nux vomica, when it is brought on by
damp, cold weather, or from sitting on damp, cold steps; associated with sneezing and stuffed up
feeling in the nose. The nose is dry, there is very little discharge, the eyes water, and there is
scraping in the throat, and dullness and oppression about the front sinuses; it should be given as
soon as dryness and tickling in the nose begins; the nasal passages are alternately free and
obstructed. These symptoms are worse in a warm room and better in the open air. It is of little
use after the cold is established. Mercurius is similar, having rawness and soreness in the nose,
but it is especially aggravated in damp weather. Pulsatilla is more for a ripe cold, and Arsenicum
also has heat and burning in the nose, but the coryza is relieved by warmth and aggravated by
cold, which is opposite of Nux. Another symptom indicating Nux is a fluent coryza during the
day and a stuffed up sensation at night.
#Mercurius [Merc]
There is a profuse coryza which extends to the frontal sinuses, burning in eyes and nose, acrid
discharge, violent sneezing, and tendency to perspiration which aggravates. When a cold begins
with coryza, Mercurius is a valuable remedy. Kali iodatum has great distress in frontal region,

worse at 3 A.M. Mercurius is especially aggravated in damp weather and the coryza is worse by
heat of stove room; nose is sore; wiping nose is painful. Thin watery discharges belong to Allium
cepa, Euphrasia, Arum triphyllum and Arsenicum. The Mercury discharge is thin mucus, not
thick as in Pulsatilla, Hydrastis, and some other drugs, or it may be yellowish green in color.
#Pulsatilla [Puls]
Pulsatilla is more indicated in an advanced stage of cold in the head, what is known as a ripecold, hence it should not be given at the beginning of a cold, for it is never indicated. There is no
sneezing or excoriating discharge with Pulsatilla. The discharge is thick, yellow, muco-purulent,
and, above all bland. Penthorum sedoides. Coryza with raw nose and throat; later it has the thick,
yellow discharge of Pulsatilla, but the keynote of this remedy is a sensation of wetness in the
nose. Hydrastis is also similar to Pulsatilla, but there is no burning and rawness and tenacity to
the discharge; sensation of a hair in the nostrils; constant desire to blow the nose, which feels raw
and excoriated; the cold has settled in the back of the nose and throat. This remedy alone will
cure more sinusites than any remedy because it is more often indicated. Thick, yellow, tenacious
mucus in posterior nares, more distinctly yellow than Kali bichromicum and profuse. If you have
a Pulsatilla cold, and in addition to it you have sneezing, give Cyclamen, also for attacks of
sneezing without a cold. Chromico-kali-sulphuricum in the 2X or 3X is highly recommended in
chronic rhinitis. With the pulsatilla cold there is usually loss of smell and taste, and there is relief
in the open air, even though the patient be chilly. Magnesia muriatica. Loss of taste and smell
after catarrh. Drosera suits the last of colds with a cough coming on by fits.
#Camphora [Camph]
First stage of cold in the head when nose is stopped up and is dry, and the inspired air feels
cooler than usual. It will often check an incipient cold when the chill is first felt, and is a useful
remedy in chronic or rather paroxysmal coryzas, which occur upon every change ;of weather; it
may be used by olfaction. The patient feels chilly, frontal sinuses involved, dull headache.
Increased secretion of watery mucus from nose, with and without sneezing. It really comes in
along with or even before Aconite, but it has not the wide range of application that Aconite has.
#Kali iodatum [Kali-i]
Thin, excoriating and very profuse, scalding discharges from the nose and coryzas, which
involve the frontal sinuses and antra ;of Highmore in scrofulous or mercurialized individuals,
with profuse, watery discharges, call for this remedy. The eyes smart, lachrymate and become
puffed. The throat is irritated and the no;se is apt to be red. Kali bichromicum. Discharge tough
and stringy, sometimes extending to throat, causing choking. It often follows Aconite well,
catarrhs involving whole respiratory tract. It is a frequently indicated remedy in chronic nasal
catarrh, hypertrophic rhinitis, first fluent acrid coryza relieved by warmth, then tough, stringy,
discharge; wants to blow nose; no discharge; feeling of dryness in nose. Lemna minor. Putrid
smell, putrid taste. Nasal polypi, atrophic rhinitis, glairy mucus, post-nasal discharge.

#Natrum muriaticum [Nat-m]

Colds with watery, transparent discharges, causing vesicular eruptions about mouth and nose,
with watery, clear frothy discharge, worse on going into colds air and on exertion; great dryness
of posterior nares. There is entire loss of taste. This is the Schuessler remedy for coryzas, the
watery exudations being the biochemic indication for coryzas, the watery exudations being the
biochemic indication for its use. Dropping of mucus from naso-pharynx in the morning. It also
removes the tendency to take cold. Sticta. Constant desire to blow the nose, though nothing
escapes; stuffed feeling at root of nose. The leading and most annoying symptom is dryness of
the mucous membrane of the nose ( Senega), secretion dries rapidly, forming scabs difficult to
dislodge. Clarke considers Natrum muriaticum one of the most valuable remedies we possess for
colds. The use of salt baths by the old school and the popular use of salt food would seem to
verify this observation.
#Dulcamara [Dulc]
Dry coryza renewed by slightest exposure, worse after getting wet, in the open air and at night. It
suits especially torpid phlegmatic constitutions, those who take cold when the weather changes
to a lower temperature, and so it becomes of great use in nasal catarrhs and influenzas of autumn.
The Nux coryza is worse in the house and better in the open air, which will easily distinguish.
Colds which come on from change of weather and gradually involve the whole respiratory tract
may indicate Dulcamara. Cold sores may accompany the colds. Colds which come on
suddenly, with a discharge dropping at times like clear water from the nose, should call for
Calcarea and it will be found of great service. Sanguinaria nitrate. Acute colds with sneezing,
profuse discharge, burning and rawness in posterior nares. Chronic catarrh, thick, yellow
discharge, with much burning and irritation, husky voice must clear throat before speaking.

COCCUS CACTI, 3X
Paroxysmal cough, ending in gagging and vomiting, the latter often caused by the expectorate
adhering to the posterior pharynx or velum; much post-nasal discharge, with hawking and
gagging. Expectoration transparent and stringy. Urinary organs involved urine, thick (Aspar.),
dark or coffee coloured; hot, painful, soreness over region of kidneys. Leucorrhea of transparent
lumps. Pulsation in glans penis. This remedy is not used as frequently as it should be, the
combination of pulmonary and nephritic symptoms is not at all uncommon, and occurs especially
in whooping cough, pneumonia, etc. It is one of my favourites and has given me many successes.
It is worthy of remark that Lachesis has many points of resemblance and that both are animal
poisons. One patient for whom the remedy was indicated had the intolerance of the pressure of
clothes about the neck, just like Lachesis. This aggravation from pressure of clothes applies
equally well to several of the other symptoms of the cochineal and is of a piece with the
sensitiveness of the buccal cavity to gargling, brushing the teeth, hawking, etc. This remedy
occupies a middle place between Cantharis and Lachesis, having many of the modalities of the
latter and a milder type of the urinary symptoms of the former. This unique position enables us to
cover a group of symptoms hitherto found quite difficult to handle. Remember whooping or
spasmodic coughs with nephritis.
