Council in cooperation with the Langham Cultural Centre. This year the show runs from January 6 to 29 in both
Langham galleries and features the work of some fifty
North Kootenay Lake artists paintings, photography,
sculpture and other works in a variety of media, including
clay, fibre and wood.
Everyone is welcome to attend the opening night reception at 7 pm on Friday, January 6 where we celebrate the
vibrant artistic scene that exists in our corner of Canada.
On Friday, January 20 the annual fundraising auction
and performance night presents local musicians and performers in between some hard-hitting auctioneering. The
money raised supports Arts Council activities such as
ArtWalk, an annual Scholarship, the Front Street Banner
Project, Art in the Market and Arts Advocacy.

Series At Nelson Library!
For high school and college students, there is a lot in

life to figure out. The Nelson Public Library wants to
help by dedicating the month of January to indispensable
life skills. We all need a little help now and then, says
Teen Services librarian Melodie Rae Storey. This series
is for older teens looking to build skills as they head into
adulthood.
Counselor Rob Rolleman offers relationship advice on
Thursday, January 5. Next, Nelson and District Credit
Unions Todd Atkins offers a chat about financial literacy
on Thursday, January 12. A master of study skills, Selkirks Todd Solarik will teach skills in how to do well in
our classes and exams on Thursday, January 19. And on
Thursday, January 26 the Youth Employment Resource
Centre (YERC) will teach resumes and job hunting skills.
All programs run from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. Additionally,
a study session called Exam Cram includes tutors on
hand to help students takes place on Saturday, January
21, from 1 pm to 4 pm. All programs are drop in, free
and include pizza.

is 1 year old, 8 lbs, spayed and fully vaccinated, and is a Chihuahua
- dachshund cross, we think. She is doing so well in her foster home.
She loves her foster sister/doggy, and plays well with her. She is
becoming more comfortable with a normal family setting (she was
found as a stray and we are not sure of her history), is fully house and
crate trained, and walks well on a leash. She is very snuggly once she
feels safe. She does still bark at visitors to the home; we are working

Flight to Freedom is a fundraising initiative put on by

the Nelson Friends of Refugees to help offset the flight
costs incurred by four young male refugees.
Canada is one of only three countries that not only charges
refugees for their flights but also charges them interest on
the loans needed to pay for these flights. In our view this
works against the objective of Canadas refugee program
which is simply to save the lives of the most vulnerable.
Our hope, in putting on this fundraiser is that these
young men can start their lives in Canada debt free.
In the last few weeks, Nelson Friends of Refugee volunteers went into classes at South Nelson and the Wildflower
program at Central School. We played games with the children, the guys themselves came in and put on slide shows
and answered questions. On the third day, we made crafts
of small wooden airplanes, each representing the Flight to
Freedom the guys had to take to reach Canada. These planes
will be sold to help pay down the debt to the government.
Nelson is a small town with a big heart, we are so lucky
to be able to share the safety and security found here.
Please look for the airplanes on sale at the Christmas
tree lot across from the Hume School, 323 Nelson Avenue,

Funds For CARES
Selkirk Colleges Contemporary Music and Technology

Program students are hitting the stage at Spiritbar in Nelson on Thursday, December 15 in an event that showcases
their talent and generosity to the community.
The annual winter show and celebration features five
student based ensembles performing an eclectic mix of
genres. All proceeds from this night of entertainment will
go to the Nelson CARES Society Room to Live campaign
which is creating affordable housing for people in Nelsons
downtown core.
Students have been working diligently preparing for this
event as part of their learning at the Tenth Street Campus
of Selkirk College. Some of the ensembles are joined by
Selkirk College instructors who have mentored and collaborated with the students.

bring the Japanese Canadian

history of internment into the

highlighting Japanese and Asian Canadian history and
culture as important in broadening the focus of the Langham. This year Tchir secured grant funding from Heritage
Canada to organize a 75th Anniversary commemoration
of the internment of Japanese Canadians at the Langham
in the fall of 2017.
Continuing into the future, the Langham Board is now
pleased to announce the appointment of Paul GraceCampbell as the new executive director. Paul begins work
in January. Tchir says, Paul is a man of integrity and is
very familiar with rural communities. The Langham will
benefit from his wide knowledge of nonprofits, grant
writing and team building. The next phase and challenge
for the Langham is to further develop security and safety
for the building, to enhance its cultural and heritage programs and develop a stronger community presence in
Kaslo and beyond.
Paul brings a diverse set of skills and experience to the
Society. University trained in the visual arts and as a geologist, he has worked in small rural communities in Panama and Oregon. In Panama he cultivated an enduring
interest in living and working in small remote communities. He also became a successful grant writer in community development organizations in the nonprofit sector. In
2007, Paul and his wife, Dona, moved to Bella Coola, BC.
A drummer since the age of 12, Paul has had a lifelong
involvement with music. For seven years Paul worked
with local artistic and cultural organizations, most notably the Bella Coola Music Festival, where he served the
board as both president and secretary.
Along with diverse experiences, Paul brings a positive
can-do attitude and a good sense of humour to his new
job. His lifelong interest lies in developing creative cultural and economic revitalization for small rural communities. At the Langham, the next chapter is waiting to be
written. Reflecting on his new position at the Langham,
Grace-Campbell says, It is important to the fabric of a
community to have a thriving arts and culture hub like
the Langham. Like many folks, the Langham is a big reason why we chose to move to Kaslo. To have this opportunity to apply my skills and experience to continue all
the great programming and to help expand the Langhams
scope and influence is a privilege and an honour.
