Belowfollowsalistwiththemostimportantpropertiesforoutdoorinsulationanda
shortcomparisonbetweenthecharacteristicsofORIENTsiliconerubberandporcelain
bothasmaterialsandasanintegralpartofthebushing.
Hydrophobicity:
ThesurfaceofSIRmaintainsahighlevelofhydrophobicityevenduringsevere
environmentalconditions.Ifthehydrophobicityofthesurfaceisdecreased,thesurface
willrecoveritshydrophobicpropertiesinlessthan12hourssincetheSIRcontinuously
emitsmoleculesofsiliconeoiltothesurface.Thelayerofsiliconeoilisonlyafew
moleculesthickandprovidesthehydrophobicpropertiesofthesurface.The
hydrophobicityofporcelainontheotherhandisreducedalreadyafterafewdayswith
mediumseverepollutionlevelsandwillnotrecoverunlessthesurfaceiscleaned.The
designcriteriaforporcelaininsulatorsaccordingtostandardsare31mm/kVatsevere

andeliminatesthedisturbancesinthepowergridresultingfromsuchevents.
Lightweight:
ThedensityofORIENTSIRis1530kg/m3and2500kg/m3ofporcelain.Theelectrical
insulationinsidetheSIRismadeofresinimpregnatedpaper.Thehighmechanical
strengthoftheinsulationmaterialsupportstheSIR,whichneedtobejust5mmthick
withtheexceptionofthesheds.ThustheweightoftheGSAbushingsisreducedto
approximatelyhalfofitsequivalentoilimpregnatedbushingswithporcelainasoutdoor

forapplicationswherevandalismbyforexamplestoneorbrickthrowingcanbe
expected.Theriskfortransportdamageisalmosteliminatedaswell.Thesafetyof

Selfextinguishing:
Siliconerubberisprovedtobeselfextinguishingevenifatestsampleisheldvertically
