ME 343: Mechanical Design-3

Sheet 1: Shafts
1. The figure is a schematic drawing of a countershaft that supports two V-belt
pulleys. For each pulley, the belt tensions are parallel. For pulley A, consider the
loose belt tension is 15 percent of the tension on the tight side. The shaft is made
of steel having Sy = 340 MPa and Se = 216 MPa. A shaft of uniform diameter is
to be selected for this application.
(a) For a static analysis, determine the minimum preferred size diameter. Use the
maximum shear stress theory and a factor of safety, FS = 3.
(b) Determine the minimum preferred diameter if the shaft has to be designed for minor
to heavy shock (use the ASME formula).

(c) For a fatigue analysis, determine the minimum preferred size diameter. Apply
Soderberg equation (+ max. shear stress theory) with FS = 3.
(d) What are the values of slopes at bearings C and O? Which type of bearings can
be used?
(e) If pulleys A and B weight 2.5 kg and 3 kg, respectively, determine the critical
speed of the shaft. At which operating speed would you recommend this shaft
to be running?
