SEMESTER 1
SESSION 2016/2017
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this course is to develop students so that they will be able to analyze and resolve
forces in a mechanical system, able to determine stresses, strain and displacement in structure due
to load acting on them using basic concepts of force systems and solid mechanics.

SYNOPSIS
Statics
Introduction to basic concepts in statics and mechanics as a study of physical sciences, system of
units, scalars and vectors, free body diagram, forces system resultants and moments, equilibrium
of a particle, equilibrium of a rigid body, structural analysis, center of gravity and centroid.
Mechanics
Introduction to various type of structures, type of supports, concepts and definition of stress, strains,
torsion, shear force and bending moment, theory on axial loading, torsion, pure bending and beam
deflection, and combination of loads.
