Title: Creating Historical Fiction
Relevant SC Standards:
5th Grade W.MMC.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events
using effective techniques, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
3.1 Gather ideas from texts, multimedia, and personal experience to write narratives
that:
a) develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences;
b) orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or
characters;
c) organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally;
d) use dialogue, pacing, and manipulation of time to develop experiences and events
or show the responses of characters to situations;
e) develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing
building on personal ideas and the ideas of others;
f) use a variety of transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage the sequence
of events;
g) use imagery, precise words, and sensory details to develop characters and convey
experiences and events precisely; and
h) provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

4.1 When writing:

Explain the principal events related to the involvement of the United States in World
War II, including campaigns in North Africa and the Mediterranean; major battles of
the European theater such as the Battle of Britain, the invasion of the Soviet Union, and
the Normandy invasion; and events in the Pacific theater such as Pearl Harbor, the
strategy of island-hopping, and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Description: This app lesson will develop 5th grade students knowledge history and
language arts skills.
Instructional Objective: Students will learn of the WWII event known as The Battle
of the Bulge. Students will also further their understandings of writing and the ability to
compose stories.
Step 1: Students will use the YouTube app to watch the brief video titled World War II
in HD: Battle of the Bulge.

Step 2: Students will then create a fictional story using the Google Docs app based on
the events of The Battle of the Bulge using a character they create that would be in the
conflict.
