each end. Calculate the safe load carrying capacity of the strut.
2. An ISA 90x90x6mm is used as a strut in a truss. The length of the strut between
intersections at each end is 3m.calculate the strength of the strut if,
a) It is connected by two bolts at each end
b) It is connected by one bolt at each end
c) It is welded at each end.
3. A single angle section ISA 60x60x8mm, 3m long is used as strut. The ends are welded to
the gusset plates. Determine the design compressive strength and the service load that can
be applied.
4. Calculate the strength of a discontinuous strut of length 3.2m. the strut consists of two
unequal angles 150x75x8mm with long legs connected and placed
a) On the opposite side of a gusset plate
b) On the same side of a gusset plate
The strut is tack bolted and is connected to a 10mm gusset plate.
5. A strut consists of a double angle section ISA 100x100x8mm and is 3.2 m long. The
member is connected to the gusset plate by 3, 20mm diameter ordinary bolts. Calculate
the design compressive strength of the member.
a) When the angles are placed on the opposite sides of 12mm thick gusset plate
b) When the angles are placed on the same side of 12mm thick gusset plate
c) Calculate the percentage change in the design compressive strength if the two
angles placed as per above two cases.
6. Design single angle discontinuous strut to carry a factored axial compressive load of
60kN.the length of strut is 3m between intersections. It is connected to 12mm thick
gusset plate by 20mm diameter 4.6 grade bolts. Use steel of grade Fe410.

7. Design a double angle discontinuous strut to carry a factored load of 150kN.the length of
strut is 3m between intersections. The two angles are placed back to back and are tack
bolted. Consider the following cases.
a) Angles are placed on the opposite sides of the gusset plate
b) Angles are placed on the same side of the gusset plate
c) Two angles in star formation (assume Fe410 steel & f y =250N/mm2)
8. An ISMB 150 is used as a column. It is laterally supported in the plane of the major axis
at a height 2.5m and in the plane of minor axis at a height of 4.5 m. the columns ends
may be assumed as hinged. What will be the allowable load on the column?
9. A steel stanchion is formed of two channels of ISMC 350 placed back to back with a
clear spacing of 190mm. if the effective length of channel is 6m. Find the safe axial load
that the column can carry.
Calculate the extra load the column can carry if two plates of 400mmx20mm welded to
the channel flanges one on each side.
10. Design a column to support a factored load of 1000kN. The column has an effective
length of 7m with respect to z-axis and 5m with respect to y-axis. Use steel grade of
Fe410.
11. The strut of a space frame member having a length of 3m has to carry a factored load of
200kN.assuming f y =250N/mm2. Design a circular tube to carry the load. Assume that the
ends are simply supported.
12. Design a column to support an axial load of 2400kN, assuming that the column has an
effective length of 8m with respect to z-axis & 4m with respect to the y axis. Only ISHB
450 is available, design a built up I- section with two flange plates.
13. Design a built-up column to with 2 channel sections back to back to carry an axial
factored load of 1250kN. The height of the column is 7m and effectively held in position
at both ends, but not restrained against rotation. take f y =250N/mm2
a) Design single lacing system with 16mm dia bolt of 4.6 grade
b) Design single lacing system with field weld

both planes is 5 m. Provide double lacing system with
a) Bolted connections
b) Welded connections
Use Fe 410 grade steel and bolts of grades 4.6
Design the column with two channels placed toe-to-toe.
End condition: The column is restrained in position but not in direction at both the ends.
15. Design a built up column 7 m long to carry a service axial compressive load of 1000kN.
