By liberating Somalia from the evils of Al-Shabaab and other armed illegal
groups, we will be liberating ourselves. So I am very happy that the
AMISOM female peacekeepers have understood this very clearly and are
working hand in hand with their sisters in the Somali Police Force, the
Somali security services and helping peace return slowly but steadily. You
are producing peace for this country and for the entire continent and
preparing the ground for the second liberation.

We are here because Somalia is experiencing serious security, stability
and peace problems. We have realized that if the security problems that
Somalia is facing are not solved, then the East African region and
eventually the entire continent will not experience peace hence, there will

be no development. So our leaders decided that we must come to Somalia

not as a charity to the Somalis but as part of our own effort for liberation.

size, in territory and in various forms. This would not have been possible
without the female counterparts. We salute you in your various capacities.
You have excelled in those areas beyond 100 percent in terms of performance

AMISOM female peacekeepers honoured for contributing to peace in
Somalia
Mogadishu, 14 December 2016 - Female peacekeepers serving in Somalia
have been honoured for their role in pacifying the country.
The officers efforts were recognized, Monday, at a dinner hosted for them by
the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union
Commission (SRCC) in Somalia, Francisco Madeira, and attended by Force
Commander, Lt. Gen Osman Noor Soubagleh and ambassadors of Kenya
and Uganda to Somalia among other dignitaries.

Speaking at the function, Ambassador Madeira said female peacekeepers

were contributing to the second liberation of the continent, whose main
objective was spurring economic and social development.
By liberating Somalia from evil of Al-Shabaab and other armed illegal violent
groups, we will be liberating ourselves. I am very happy that the AMISOM
female peacekeepers have understood this very clearly and are working hand
in hand with their sisters in the Somali Police Force and are contributing to
peace slowly but steadily, he added.
The SRCC said the African Union had to intervene in Somalia to stop the war
adding that the fighting was not only dangerous to the country but also to the
continent. He reiterated that AMISOMs presence in Somalia was to ensure
peace and stability prevails and also provide a conducive environment for
Africa to prosper.
AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen Osman Noor Soubagleh, called on the
African Union to push for the increased participation of women, adding that
the move will impact positively on the mission.
Having more women in peacekeeping is something that all of us should strive
for because it will improve the effectiveness of peace operations and will allow
the mission to draw from the widest possible pool of talent that meets our
mission standards, Lt. Gen. Soubagleh noted.
Kenyas Ambassador to Somalia, Lucas Tumbo, concurred with Lt. Gen.
Soubagleh, noting that despite the numerous challenges they face, they have
continued to deliver on the job. He however urged them to remain steadfast to
help AMISOM achieve its mandate.
Let me remind you that a challenge-free environment is useless. Challenges
make us grow. Where you are confronted with challenges, you should know
that you are being presented with an opportunity to excel, Ambassador
Tumbo stated.
Ugandas Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, Maj. Gen. Nathan Mugisha rooted
for greater involvement of women, noting that the peacekeeping mission in
Somalia has greatly transformed, partly because of the input of female
peacekeepers.
AMISOM is not the same as it was sometime back. You have expanded in
size, in territory and in various forms. This would not have been possible
without the female counterparts. We have excelled in those areas beyond 100
percent in terms of performance and this is because AMISOM is a success
story, Maj. Gen. Mugisha observed, thanking the Troop Contributing
Countries (TCCs) for the continued support.
