Boschert, Sherry. "Cyberbullying triples suicide risk in teenagers." Pediatric News June 2013:
15. Academic OneFile. 20 Oct. 2016.
Citations should be double-spaced
Boschert argues cyberbullying has a direct influence on suicide related thoughts
and attempts in teenagers. Boschert makes the argument that suicide attempts
requiring treatment were three times as likely in teenagers who report
experiencing cyberbullying. The information she collected shows that
approximately 80% of teenagers are engaging with social media and between
boys and girls, 22% of girls report being cyberbullied compared to 11% of boys.
Children ages 13 17, 12% were found to have suicidal ideation, 4% plan suicide
and another 4% attempt suicide. Boschert suggests rates for suicide attempts that
require treatment in youths who had been cyberbullied is 5.4%, indicating that
cyberbullying and suicide rates are directly related. With the increased use in
technology comes the increase of exposure to cyberbullying amongst teenagers,
and Boschert proves this is large problem. Goodhow is this useful for your

Bugeja, Michael J. Interpersonal Divide: The Search for Community in a Technological Age.
Oxford UP, 2005.
In his book, Bugeja addresses the fact that by using media, humans have become
less aware of our behaviors and the effects those behaviors have. He argues that
using media has forced us to dwell in more than one environment at a time: the
real one and the digital one. Bugeja also points out that in general we become less
mindful of others around us and reject their opinions and voices because, by using
media we are able to find alternate opinions elsewhere. Overall, he states that we
have come to ignore physical habitat and others around us. Having an opinion of
others as irrelevant has caused us to pay less attention to our behaviors towards
them and the effects those behaviors may have. Explain how this source helps

sites? The influence of previous cyberbullying victimization experiences." Computers in

Human Behavior, vol. 52, November 2015, pp. 458-465. Academic OneFile. 20 Oct.
2016.
Cao and Lin present their case study to find out how previous victims of
cyberbullying react to witnessing someone else being cyberbullied. The main
purpose is to determine whether a previous victim will show prosocial behaviors,
by telling the bully to stop or comforting the victim, or antisocial behaviors such
as joining in the cyberbullying. Their study found that being a victim of previous
cyberbullying experience was a predictor of antisocial behaviors overall. The
study also determined that girls were more likely to take? prosocial behaviors
while boys were more likely to exhibit antisocial behaviors. The results of the
study show that gender and being a previous victim of cyberbullying play a role in
determining how an individual will react. Interesting study. This summary is well
written. Usefulness?
Cenat, Jude Mary, et al. "Cyberbullying, psychological distress and self-esteem among youth in
Quebec schools." Journal of Affective Disorders, vol. 169, 1 December 2014, pp. 7-9.
Academic OneFile. 20 Oct. 2016.
The statement is made thatthis is a very abstract sentence construction.
Consider using this type of construction instead: Cenats team argue that with the
creation of new technologies comes new potential settings in which an individual
can become a victim. Their study sets out to explain how being a victim of
cyberbullying relates to future psychological distress and low self-esteem in
youths. Of the 8,194 teenagers in Quebec that were questioned, 18% of boys and
almost 25% of girls reported that they had been cyberbullied at least once within
the last year. Girls were also found to have a higher prevalence of psychological
distress and low self-esteem. Cenats team suggest more support and awareness
programs should be offered to these teenagers since this is such a severe problem.
Cyberbullying is becoming a part of the lives of many teenagers and needs to be
handled as the massive problem it is proving to be. Interesting study. Usefulness?
Gardner, Howard, and Katie Davis. The App Generation: How Today's Youth Navigate Identity,
intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World.
This book delves into the psychological effects that digital technologies have on
todays youth; specifically cognitive mastery, moral compasses, and ethical
orientation. A majority of the focus is on young peoples thought processes,
personality, imaginations, and behaviors when interacting with their media. Media
has become a large component of the lives of teenagers and this book helps to
highlight the effects. Is there a chapter in this book that would be useful for your
essay? If so, focus your summary on this one chapter instead of glossing over the
whole book. Rememberthis bibliography is for your research purposes.

This source is a study whichtry and make this opening statement less abstract
as I showed you in your annotation of Cenats article explores the
consequences of cyberbullying. The main aim of this research is to examine the
cyber bullying and cyber victim which transforms into a big problem by
extending more and more between young generations in 21st century. You
should not be putting quoted material in an annotation Cyberbullying can have
many effects on those who experience it in their lifetimes, especially teenagers
and it is important to recognize the severity of the problem. Too vague. Too short.

The second chapter of this book has a lot of valid information regarding cyber
bullying and the effect it has on young peoplegood. What is the name of that
chapter. What useful stuff do the authors have to offer?
It? also talks about the bullies themselves and why/ how they tend to bully
examples?. Another important aspect it touches on is how bullying is perpetuated
by society which can in turn also lead to more and drastic outcomes of bullying
example?. Too vague, too short. Usefulness?

Desensitization Effects among Early Adolescents." ScienceDirect, Elsevier B.V., 21 Apr.

The goal of this journal is to determine if exposure to cyber bullying as a
bystander leads early adolescents to feel less empathy for the victims and take a
more tolerant position towards the behavior. The study is done to determine if
being less empathetic towards the victim and having a more positive view on
cyber bullying in early adolescents is a result of being a bystander to repeated
cyber bullying occurrences. Over a six month period, the early adolescents that
Pabians team studied did not seem to show a more empathetic behavior towards
victims of cyber bullying, nor did they show a change in attitude towards
cyberbullying after being in a bystander position. Pabians team suggest that early
adolescents receive empathy training and education to hopefully influence them to
behave differently towards victims in the future. Though some may argue that
previous exposure to cyber bullying would influence a bystander to feel empathy
for a victim, this study does not support that idea. This is an excellent source.

In her talk, Turkle acknowledges how technology has become an active part of
our lives. Turkle suggests that technology has allowed us to control the distance
we put between ourselves and those we communicate with. She also brings
attention to the idea that technology allows us to feel connected to those that are
not otherwise immediately accessible. Turkle focuses on how technology has
affected how we communicate and our relationships, which can be especially
important in the lives of teenagers. And this is relevant to cyberbullying because?

Emily and Jackie,
You have selected interesting sources with a good mix of case studies and theory. Your annotations do a
good job illustrating key findings and key issues. Some entries are a little vague and a little short
something to work on for revision. However, the biggest issue for revision is your reflection on how
useful these sources are for your essay.
On the whole, your MLA 8 citation style is accuratejust a few need tweaking for accuracy. Your
annotations are on the whole well written. For revision, make sure you consistently refer to the

author throughout each annotation so that there is no doubt you are representing his/her
ideas.
On a technical level, your document needs a little work. This is a collaborative project
include both your names on the document. Include your thesis statement and pay attention
to formatting rules for spacing.
