Annotated Bibliography
Franklin D. Roosevelt is one of the most memorable Presidents in history for his infinite
devotion to fix the country in a time of crisis, which earned him such a detailed,
significant memorial after all that he accomplished in his four terms during the post
Great Depression era. But, at the same time, he did some unadmirable actions during
his Presidency that failed to be mentioned in his picture perfect memorial. Good

Isabelle Hymans article discusses the controversy that took place before the
memorial was even built. The original design of the memorial had a competition
to see who could create the best designlogic? The way you have structured
this sentence makes it seem like it was the original design of the memorial that
organised the competition. The winning design then had to be approved by both
the Commission of Fine Arts and Franklin D. Roosevelts family. The first model
caused controversy because the popular press criticized the design for its huge
scale: 167 feet high walls on platforms on? angels from each other. Both the
Commission of Fine Arts and Roosevelts family didnt approve of either the
original or revised version of this design. They had to scrap the idea entirely and
start with a new designer. Hyman then describes how architect Marcel Breuer
was selected to be the designer for the memorial, but was then rejected after
new members joined the Commission of Fine Arts. Isabelle Hyman shows how
much detail is taken into consideration for presidential memories, including
choosing the designers, which is the main focus of her article. And this is useful

Reubens goal for this article is to give recognition to the designer of the
memorial, Lawrence Halprin, and his work accomplishments. Reuben mainly
argues that the controversy caused by the memorial was due to both the design
and the values behind Roosevelts presidency. The design quality caused
controversy amongst critics with the work itself. Critics also said there was too
much going on at once in the memorial, therefore it was over stimulating, making
it hard to get clear points across. The values caused controversy because the
memorial fails to show the negative aspects of Roosevelts presidency, such as
his weak civil rights legislation. Overall, Reubens article helps point out several
controversial moments caused by the FDR memorial from both the physical
aspects and the symbolic meaning behind it. Reuben concludes with the
struggles of having to build any presidential memorial because both Congress
and the people will have a variety of opinions on whats best. Good summary.

Parsons, John G. The Public Struggle to Erect the Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Memorial. Landscape Journal, vol. 31, no. 1-2, Jan. 2012, pp. 145159.
Parsons article covers controversy of getting the memorial built in Washington
D.C., and thats because the public tends to discourage public sponsors in hopes
that the memorial will fail to be built. Parsons argument involves going into detail
about the steps made to finally get the memorial approved to be built in
Washington D.C. Parsons goes into detail about how Congress has to approve of
a presidential memorial being built in Washington D.C., and how this could take
long periods of time. Congress has to approve of every aspect of the memorial to
ensure it is high quality and appropriate for what it is representing. Parsons
states that FDR has had to experience controversy from the building of
presidential memorials, and he himself said that he didnt want his own memorial.
Interesting! So, Roosevelts family naturally did not approve of the suggestion of
a modern memorial for the design because they didnt believe modernism
belonged in Washington D.C., or that FDR would have approved it. Parsons
article is able to explain the dilemmas behind the final memorial being built.
Excellent. Usefulness?

polio, although he used a wheelchair, cane, and braces throughout his entire
presidency. This raised a lot of controversy, causing people to suggest that either
the current statues of him should be fixed, or that they should add another
sculpture showing him using a wheelchair or cane. Some people argued that
they should leave his disability out of the memorial because the public wasnt
aware of his disability, therefore the way he was perceived should be preserved
by leaving his disability unmentioned. But, others argued that hiding this
significant part of his life continues to give a negative connotation to the idea of
being disabled. Stephensons article covers controversy on the ideas behind
displaying Roosevelts disability, rather than the memorials controversy as a
whole. Good source. Good summary. Usefulness?

Nielsen, Kim E. Memorializing FDR. OAH Magazine of History, vol. 27, no. 1, Jan.
2013, pp. 2326. doi:10.1093/oahmag/oas049.
Nielsen discusses how the debates on the building of a presidential memorial
prove that honoring a presidents memory is very complicated. Nielsen goes into
detail about the significance of Roosevelts disability in his life and how he was
afraid to ask for help sometimes without his leadership skills seeming fragile.
Nielsens article covers many topics of disability, and how activists fought for
disabilities to be more represented in FDRs presidential memorial. The
conclusion shows that the memorials controversy over the representation of
disability proves that the nation has a weak relationship and understanding of
what people with disabilities are really like, because it seems that they fear a
president is going to look weak and dependent if it was made evident that he
lived with a disabilitythis sentence is very long. Revise it into two.. Nielsens
article covers an array of topics on disability activism and how it affected Franklin
D. Roosevelts presidential memorial. And is useful because?
Kiera,
This is a good annotated bibliography.
Your document is nicely formatted.
You have excellent MLA 8 citations.
Your sources are very interesting.
Your annotations are thorough, well organized, and for the most part well written. There are
some awkward sentence structures to sort out and some logic issues to deal with.
For revision you need to add a section that explains how useful each source will be for your
essay. Also, on a technical level, entries need to be organized in alphabetical order
