Literacy in Our Classroom

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to Mr. Ledshams Grade
4 classroom! Literacy is such an
important part of our classroom
and students will be able to
explore the different components
of literacy such as reading,
writing, and comprehending.
Reading is essential for the
development of your childs
language skills, and for
interacting with the world around
them. My aim this year in grade
4 is to help foster these skills.
However, I need your help!
Encouraging your child to read at
home will help in the
development of these skills. This
letter has many of the elements
we will be working on this year,
as well as gives suggestions on
how we will incorporate reading
and literacy in our classroom. If

1) ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

2) MAKE PREDICTIONS
3) ANALYZE TEXT STRUCTURE
4) VISUALIZING
5) SUMMARIZING
6) READ ALOUD
7) USE GUIDING QUESTIONS

Some books we will be exploring in

our classroom include: The Day the
Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt,
OCD Daniel by Wesley King, and
Where the Wild Things Are by
Maurice Sendak.

We will be using Literacy in our

classroom in many ways:

Rights of the Reader

o The right not to read
o The right to skip pages
o The right not to finish
o The right to re-read
o The right to read anything
o The right to escapism
o The right to read anywhere
o The right to browse
o The right to read aloud
o The right not to defend your
tastes
By encouraging these rights,
students will develop a love for
reading and foster lifelong
literacy!

(1) Daily Reading

Students will be engaged in
activities regularly, and
develop skills that will
enhance their literacy.
(2) Book Talks
I want students to be excited
about their books they are
reading. Having book talks
will allow students to share
their enthusiasm with their
peers and myself.
(3) Retelling Stories
Students can choose a
section of their favorite book
and retell it in their own
words. This shows their
comprehension skills first
hand.
(4) Guest Authors
Throughout the year we will
have childrens authors
visiting our school. Your child
will have the opportunity to
listen to them speak, and hear
them read their book aloud.
(5) Cross Curricular
Books related to each subject
will be available in the
classroom library, and reading
will be incorporated into each
subject.
