Thenexttwoyears(18861887),transformedthesubjects,
colorandtechniquesthatVanGoghusedincreatingstilllife

VanGoghmovedtoNuenenin1884wherehelivedfortwoyears.[1]UponVanGogh'sarrival,astudiowasmade
forhimfromalaundryroomatthebackofhisparents'home.Vincent'sfather,ReverendVanGoghwrotetohis
sonTheo:"Wedonotthinkitsreallysuitable,butwehavehadaproperstoveinstalled...Iwantedtoputinalarge
windowaswell,butheprefersnottohaveone."[2]Duringthattimehecompletednumerousdrawingsand
watercolorsandnearly200oilpaintings.[1]
InNovember1884VanGoghtaughtsomefriendsfromEindhoven,alargetownnearNuenen,topaintinanimate
objectsinoil.VanGogh,inhisenthusiasm,createdaseriesofstilllifepaintingsofbottles,bowlsandpotsand
otherobjects.[3]WhenVanGoghcreatedstilllifepaintingshewasabletoexplorelightanditseffectoncolors.A

Hispaletteconsistedmainlyofdarkearthtones,particularlydarkbrown,andheshowednosignofdevelopingthe
vividcolorationthatdistinguisheshislater,bestknownwork.WhenVanGoghcomplainedtohisbrotherTheovan
Gogh(artdealer)thathewasnotmakingenoughefforttosellhispaintingsinParis,Theorepliedthattheywere
toodarkandnotinlinewiththecurrentstyleofbrightImpressionistpaintings.[1]

VanGoghfoundthreestudentswhotookpaintingclassesfromhim.AntonKerssemakers,atannerofabout40
yearsofage,whohadmoneyandtimetopursuepainting,promisedtomake30paintingsoverthewinter.Hemet
KerssemakersonatriptoGennepthatresultedinVanGogh'sthreepaintingsoftheWaterMillatGennep.There
wasalsotwopeoplehecalled"theHermanns"whotooklessons,butweren'tasintenselyinterestedasAnton.Van
GoghsaidinalettertohisbrotherTheothathewasnotlookingtoreceivepaymentinmoney,ratherhe'dpreferto
berewardedbyprovidinghimtubesofpaint.[5]

Rumoredaffair
VanGoghdidnotliveattheparsonagetheentiretimehewasinNuenen.Foratimehelivedwithapriestandwas
rumoredtohavebecomeinvolvedinthepriest'sservantthatresultedinapregnancy.ThepriestcondemnedVan
Goghfortherumoredactivityandmanypeoplewithinthevillagefelthewasguilty.
VanGoghwroteinSeptember,1885,"Thataffairwiththepriesthasnotgivenmeanymoretrouble.Butofcourse
therewillalwaysbeGodfearingnativesinthevillagewhowillpersistinsuspectingme,foronethingissure,
namelythatthepriestwouldonlytoogladlythrowthewholeblameofthataffaironme.However,asIamquite
innocent,thegossipfromthatquarterleavesmeperfectlyindifferentaslongastheydon'tbothermeinmy
painting.Idon'ttakeanynoticeofitwhatever.Withthepeasantstowhomtheaccidenthappened,whereIoften
usedtopaint,Ihaveremainedongoodterms,andIamaswelcomeintheirhomeasIusedtobe."[6]

Darkcolor
VanGoghandhisbrotherTheoexchangelettersaboutVincent'spropensitytousedarkcolorsandtheamountof
blackinhispaintings.TheoisunabletosellanyofhisworkandencouragesVincenttoexplorecreatingworkthat
islighterinmoodandshade.
MidOctober1885Vincentrespondsthathetheuseofdarkcolorsaremorerealisticandmature,"Iamwritingyou
ratheralongletterthoughperhapsyoumaynotbelievewhatIsayaboutthecolours,andthoughyoumayfind
mepessimisticwhenIsaythatmuchofwhatiscalleddelicategreyisaveryuglygreythoughyoumayfindme
pessimisticorworsewhenIalsodisapproveofthesmoothpolishingoffaces,handsandeyes,becausethegreat
mastersallworkedinquiteadifferentway,perhapsbyandbyyourownstudyofart,whichIamgladyoutookup
againthoroughly,willchangeyoutoo."[7]

paintingsthatVanGoghmadewhileexploringthestilllifegenre.In1884
VanGoghtaughtpaintingtoasmallgroupofpeopleinnearbyEindhoven.
VanGoghexperimentedwiththeuseofcontrastingcolorstointensifythe
impactofhispaintings.Inthiscasehepairedthegreenofthebottles
againstareddishbrownearthenwarepot.Thepaintingissetagainstadark
backgroundwiththeeffectofmakingtheinsideofthebowlmadeinmuted
colorsappearwhite.[8]

expressthematerialinsuchawaythattheybecomeheavy,solidlumps
