Shoe Rack CAD model

A Level Project

Stool Model as Project

Sketch
These are
initial
sketches that I
did for my GCSE
project where I
had to design
and make a
lamp for a
study table. I
rendered some
of these
designs using
colour pencils
and I also used
the thick-thin
line technique
with fineliner
on some of
the sketches
to emphasise
the outer
lines.

These sketches
were also part of
my GCSE lamps
project. However,
these sketches
were inspired by
different design
movements such
as modernism and
architectural
designs. I also
rendered these
sketches with
colour pencils and
used the fineliner
to enhance the
lines of some
sketches.

These are initial

sketches for my AS
level project
where I made a
stool for a
restaurant bar.
These sketches
were shown
through multiple
ways. Some were
rendered with
coloured marker
pens which shows
the darker parts
for when there is
light. There are
also some that
was sketched on
black card and
stuck on to white
paper to show the
outline of the
design.

These are four

separate pages of
initial sketch
designs of a shoe
rack for my
ongoing A-level
project. The page
on the bottomleft has sketches
which were drawn
using a 2 point
perspective. The
other pages had
designs which
were outlined
using the thick
and thin line
technique.

Design

These are some design developments from my AS-level stool project. Here I
chose three designs from my initial sketches and developed it by adding
subtle changes which generally improves the design aesthetically and
practically. All these designs had the same function which was to provide
seating at a bar for a restaurant but each had a unique look to it and was
inspired through different design movements.

This is my final piece

for my GCSE lamp
project. This shows my
rendered plan, 3D CAD
model, an orthographic
and the final lamp
itself. The CAD model
and the orthographic
were done on the
software PRO/Desktop.
The orthographic is
useful because I can
compare the sizes and I
am able to see the
measurements more
clearly. The CAD model
is also very beneficial
as I am able to have an
idea of what it will
look like if the
measurements are
accurate in terms of
anthropometrics.

for my AS-level stool
project. For this project,
I made plan views of
the complete stool as
well as isometric views
of the separate
components of the
stool. This way, I am
able to show the
different
measurements of each
component and also
evaluate each piece. To
do this, I used the
application
PRO/Desktop. There is
also the final stool
which I had made but
will be explained more
on slide 15.

Final stool

This is my final design

of a shoe rack for my
A-level project.
Although I havent
started making it yet,
this design has multiple
parts to it including a
curve on one of the
sides. To make this
curve, I have to create
some ribs which I had
made a jig for. These
ribs act as support for
the flexiply which will
give it the curved shape.
This design has many
different joints
including dowels and
biscuit joints. Also, to
hold the shelf layers, I
designed brackets made
out of PLA which are 3D
printed.

These are some different

isometric views of my 3D
CAD model design for a
shoe rack, using GOOGLE
Sketchup, which I am in the
process of making as part
of my A-level project. The
design is unique and has
many components. I will be
using many different
machines to create this
product such as the CNC
router and the 3D printer to
make the brackets.
However, I will also use
machines that require
manual use such as the
belt sander to smoothen
the plywood frame. For the
backboard, I have chosen
to use rimboard due to the
physical factors and the
aesthetic look of it.

10

For 2 weeks in my
Summer holiday I worked
at a local architecture
firm called Eco Bumi.
Here, I was given a task
to design and create a 3D
CAD model of the
exterior of a house using
the application GOOGLE
Sketchup. This took me a
few days as I had to
also follow the
requirements from the
client. From this, I learnt
how it feels like to be
working with a client
and what it is like to
design a building with
proper measurements
following building
regulations.

11

During my attachment at Eco

Bumi, I was also given a task to
render plans. However, I didnt
make these plans as they were
past plans from previous
clients for the firm. To do this, I
had to use Photoshop to design
the interior of these plans.
Also, I had to include the
shadows which were formed by
the furniture.

Model
These are a few models that I
had made using different
materials. The first stool design
concept was made entirely by
card and held together by glue
using a hot glue gun. The
second stool design concept
has three different materials:
Wooden sticks, Card and
Styrofoam. It is also held by
glue, but the styrofoam was
shaped and cut using a hot wire.
Also, I had made a lamp model
which was to scale. This was
part of my GCSE lamps project
and was made so that I could
have a 3D visual of my design. It
was made using cardboard and
scrap polypropylene which was
held together with masking
tape.

Bulb holder
Finished product with packaging

This is the finished product of

my GCSE lamp project. The
bottom base is made from 4mm
plywood joint together with
finger-joints. At the bottom of
the base, it is a layer of sheet
aluminium which is held by
small screws. The PLA bulb
holder was 3D printed and was
screwed on to the top of the
base. At the back of the base,
there is a small hole where the
wire of the bulb can pass
through. Finally, the lamp
shade is made from two
separate pieces of
polypropylene. The first layer
is translucent white and the
second is lime green. The
second layer has many random
designs inspired by nature cut
into it so that the first layer
can be seen.

14

This is the finished product of

my AS-level stool project. It is
made entirely from plywood
and flexiply. The legs are CNC
routed and are joint together
with finger-joints. The footrest
is then glued into the gap of
the legs. The footrest is two
pieces of 20 mm thick plywood
stuck together. For the seat, I
had to create a jig to shape the
flexiply. Also, I CNC routed five
seat rails which supports the
seating. After making the seat
rails, I placed and glued the
thin piece of flexiply on top of
the rails and used the jig to
clamp it up. This way, the
flexiply will take shape of the
rails and jig and so give that
smooth curve that I was
looking for.

I am inspired to study architecture because I have always loved

designing and being able to communicate my ideas through many ways
such as sketching and modeling. Also, I am confident in being able to
work with a broad range of media to represent my designs. Being
realistic with my designs has helped me thoroughly as I am able to
develop it further into creating my designs accurately to scale such
as my design for a stool for my AS-level project. I am sure that I will
be able to expand my knowledge into designing bigger things like
buildings.

Architecture interests me because I am fascinated at looking at the

every little detail of a large building. Currently, the buildings in my
country are plain and boring. Compared to other countries that I have
been to, the difference in the architecture is distinctive. I hope to
change this through creating more unique designs using multiple
distinctive geometric shapes and using different materials. This way,
the increase in high-rise buildings will also be aesthetically pleasing
to the country as well as being practical.

Having a passion for design and being able to commit to it is not easy; it
takes up a lot of time. However, I believe that the outcome overweighs
the effort and time I put into designing. For example, it took me 3
months to complete my stool for my AS-level project but I was
willing to do so without any complaints. Architecture takes a lot of
work, but I am enthusiastic to commit to the task I am given and will do
my best for every project given to me.
