GENESIS ANG GROWTH

Central Board Of Irrigation And Power (CBIP) ,a premier institute ,constituted by


Govt. of india in 1927 before the partition of india.
It is a exchange and knowledge bank for dissemination of technical knowledge &
professional experience to help Engineers/ Professional to update their knowledge
and gain practical know-how.
The Silver Jubliee , Golden Jubliee and Diamond Jubliee celebrations of the Board
was graced by the then Prime Minster of India i.e Pt. Jawarhalal Nehru (in 1952)
Smt. Indra Gandhi (in 1977) and Mr. Rajeev Gandhi (in 1987) respectively.
CBIP has setup a Center Of Excellence ( Tranning Center) with state of the art
facilities in a multistoried building at Sector 32, Gurgoan, Haryana, which is
recognized by Ministry Of Power, Government Of India, as Category-1 Training
Institute for providing Training in the field of Hydro, Thermal, Transmission &
Distribution etc.
CBIP is commited to improve productivity and efficiency in the Power Sector to
energize the nation.

MAIN OBJECTIVES OF CBIP

Dissemination of technical knowledge through various modes, e.g., publications of


journals, manuals, technical reports, guidelines, organizing seminars and
conferences and recognition of technical excellence through awards collection,
compliation and analysis of engineering and commercial data at the national level
in water resources, power and renewable energy sectors.
To provide consultancy services and impart training to the engineers/ professionals.
To provide research and professional excellence.
To provide linkage to Indian Engineers, Managers and Scientists with their
counterparts in other countries and with international organizations
To establish a Technical database, technological development and to provide
information services to the professionals.

ORGANISTION OF THE BOARD

The affairs of the Board are administered, directed and controlled by an Executive
Committee consisting of one President, three Vice President ( Water Resource,
Power and Renewable Energy) and a member each from various organizations.
The Executive Committee presently comprises of 206 members against 09 in 1931
The Engineering Offficer of the rank of Chief Engineer and above in the fields of
Water Resources, Power and Renewable Energy from Central/State Governments,
PSU, Private Sector, etc. belonging to the organizations who are member of CBIP,
are its Members as General Body. Besides the organizations like CRPI, Tata Power,
Jindal Power, CTR Manufacturing Industries Ltd., Relience Energy and BSES
Yamuna Power Ltd. are the Life Members of the Board.
In view of the role being played by the Private Sector, in the development and
Management of Power, Water Resouces and Renewable Energy sectors, the CBIP
has also enrolled members from private organization to enable them to take
advantage of expertise available with CBIP. 70 major Pvt. Sector Organizations
have already become members of CBIP. CBIP wishes to enroll more member from

The General Body presently comprises of about 3000 members.
About 300 retired professionals are also enrolled as a life members of CBIP.
Member organization make annual contributions to CBIP for providing technical
services to them.

ACTIVITIES / SERVICES

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
CBIP has been coordinating and monitoring R&D activities, assisting in specific
case studies/ problems, documentation and dissemination of the results/findings of
Research Projects to the practising engineers under the Research Scheme on River
Valley Projects (RSRVP) Research Scheme on Flood Control (RSFCS) and
Research Scheme on Plasticulture Development (RSPD). Funds for Research
Schemes under RSRVP and RSFC were provided by Ministry of Water Resource
and for RSOP by Ministy of Power.
The result of the research conducted at the various Water Resources and Power
Research Stations in the country were discussed in CBIP Annual Research
Sessions held regularly.

DISSEMINATION OF TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE THROUGH


PUBLICATIONS
The Board publishes Technical Literature and journals including manuals,
guidelines, specification, etc.(related to the fields of Water Resources, Power
Sectors, Rock Mechanics, Tunnelling and Underground works, Large Dams,
Geosynthetics etc).
Till date about 1500 Technical publications have been brought out by CBIP.
CBIP publishes monthly the issues of Water and Energy International Journal,
which covers special features on development and management of the activities in
water resources, power and renewable energy sectors.
Indian Chapters of various International Socities such as ICOLD, ITA, IWRA,
ISRM, IGS, WWC & CIGRE having Secretaritat in CBIP have started bringing out
half-yearly journals.
CBIP has brought out Special Issues of Water & Energy International Journal of
some of the important projects such as 1000 MW Tehri HEP, 1000 MW Indira
Sagar HEP, 1480 MW Bhakra Nangal Project, 300 MW Chamera II HEP, 520 MW
Omkareshwar HEP and 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri HEP.

Old publications/Manuals are also reviewed and updated periodically.

DISSEMINATION OF KNOWLEDGE THROUGH


NATION/INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES
Pt. Jawarhalal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India had inaugurated the Board
Sesssions in 1948, 1952, 1953, & 1958.
30th Annual Session of Board held in November 1959 was inaugurated by Late Dr.
Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India.
Late Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India inaugurated the Board
Session in 1967 and World Water Congress in 1975.
Golden Jubliee of CBIP Session was inaugurated by Late Shri B.D. Jatti, the then
Acting President Of India in 1977.
Diamond Jubliee Session of the Board was inaugurated by Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi,
the then Prime Minister of India in 1987.
Platinum Jubliee year of CBIP was celebrated on completion of its 75 years in
2002.
CBIP has organised about 1700 National and International Conferences on various
advanced technologies, which have been attended by about 3.00 lakh professional.

TRAINING ACTIVITIES

CBIP has been organizing a number of National and International Training


programmes to help the Indian Engineers/Professionals to update their knowledge
and help them to gain practical know-how in power, water resources and renewable
energy sectors. CBIP has number of experienced personnel in these sectors to
impart taining besides its members who are utilized as guest faculty .
CBIP has ventured in a big way to rovide training in the field of Hydro and
Thermal Power Sector and trained more then 600 Engineers in 13 batches of
NTPC, TVNL, through long term program. It has organized about 100 specialized
programs during last 3 years on various thrust areas of these sectors. CBIP
organizes customized, long term, medium tern and short training programs for in
service/fresh engineers, diploma engineers and non technical staff as per the
requirements of any organization.
Keeping in view the requirement of large groomed manpower during the forth
coming five years plans CBIP has now launched following industry oriented
placements linked training programmes:
26 weeks post graduate diploma in T&D trained 300 engineers in 6
batches and 7th batch in progress.
52 weeks post graduate diploma in Thermal Power Plant Engineering
trained 200 engineers in 4 batches and 5th batch in progress.
6 weeks training on Hydro & Thermal engineering to about 1000 engineers
from NTPC 13 batches, TVNL 2 batches and DTL 3 batches.
2 weeks training program best practices for O&M of Thermal Power Plant
for Sr. Level Officer/Engineers from Zimbabwe Power Cos (4 batches)
2 weeks trainings programmes on Transmission Systems for Engineers from
Nigeria Transmission Company.
Dam safety training for Sri Lankan Engineers (2 batches)
We have recently started specialsed on site training programme on various
subject example- new technologies in :
Power System Protection
Power Transformer
Substation
Smart Grid

RECOGNITION OF CBIP INSTITUTE FROM MINISTRY OF


POWER, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA
CBIP has recognized as category 1 training institute for providing training in the
field of Hydro, Thermal, Transmission and Distribution and Power Management
etc. by Ministry of Power, Government of India. The long term courses offered by
CBIP are recognized career linked courses.

CBIP CENTER OF EXCELLENCE AT GURGOAN


CBIP has established its new CBIP CENTER OF EXCELLENCE having multi
storied complex of 6 floors and 2 basements with covered area of 60000 sq ft at
sector 32 in gurgoan and operational in july,2013. The new complex will be
equipped with the state-of-the-art lectue halls, conference rooms, syndicate rooms,
faculty rooms and other instructional facilities apart from the control and
instrumentation laboratories, thermal laboratories, hydro laboratories, transmission
and distribution laboratories and computer laboratories with dedicated networking
and a learning resource center. A well equipped library with digitized version of
books and journals is being used as open learning center.

DOOR STEP TRAINING


Realising the constraints being faced by the professionals in leaving their
stations/head quarters for attending various training programme organized by CBIP
in New Delhi and other places, CBIP has now decided to organize door step/onsite
training with the aim to provide training and developed skills of various
professionals of the organizations dealing in power sector as well as renewable
sectors including center and state PSUs, state transmission, distribution and
generation companies in the country.

TRAINING ON SOLAR POWER

In view of the pressing demand CBIP has recently started training on Solar Power
Development at their institute.(Gurgoan)

CONSULTANCY SERVICES
Consultancy is one of the thrust areas of CBIP and it under takes consultancy jobs
in various areas related to power, water resources and renewable energy sectors. It
has provided consultancy services to TATAs, KPCL, APSEB, TNEB, IREDA,
India Canada Environment Facility (ICEF), CPRI, US Hydro Power Council for
International Development, PTC India Ltd. TVNL, SECI, NHPC, POSOCO etc.
