Project Title: Development of a novel method for recycling of industrial membranes.

Energy consumption and membrane fouling represent major concerns in membrane

technology, since they increase the costs associated with treated water. Due to the
growth of reverse osmosis (RO) applications in industrial processes, economic but
also environmental worries have increased demand for the recycling and reuse of
fouled, end-of-life, thin-film composite RO membranes. The main objective of the
project is to demonstrate, at pilot scale, the viability of transforming end-of-life
membranes into nanofiltration and ultrafiltration membranes using a simple, low
energy surface modification technique based on polyamide chemical attack or other
methods.
The Mechanical Engineering Department has a Desalination Lab where the
membrane may be tested after recycling. The project has a commercial interest and
we will have an industrial partner to support the finances of the project.

Project Title: Design of a small single-purpose nuclear desalination system for production of
2.6 MGPD of fresh water
Project Supervisors:

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Hussain, Mechanical Dept, NED

Dr. Anwar ul Hasson Syed, Dy. Chief Engineer, KINPOE, Karachi

Pakistan has a long term plans for construction of several nuclear power plants. However, it is
the need of the time to have purpose built small nuclear systems with desalination capabilities to
provide fresh water to meet the requirements of the anticipated growth in the industrial sector
and development of new settlements to improve the socio-economical aspects of population
distribution. It is desired to address the siting, design, construction and operatipn of such nuclear
desalination units.

The project is meant to design of a 2.6 million gallons per day (1000 cubic meters/day) singlepurpose 40 MW thermal MSF or MED nuclear system. Design objectives address the
neutronics, thermal, control and mechanical design parameters of the nuclear desalination
system. The design is based on utilization of available local material, technology and manpower.

Project Title: Design of Turbine Inlet Air Cooling (TIAC) for Bin Qasim Power Station
(BQPS)
Project Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Ahmad Hussain, Mechanical Dept, NED
Representative from K-Electric
Inlet manifold cooling is an emerging technique involved in squeezing more power out of Simple
Cycle Gas Turbine. The phenomenon involves in providing cold dense air into the Inlet system
which drives through the compressor to combustion chamber where more fuel can be squirted
producing extra power with environment friendly yields.
It is required to establish a system with optimal configurations which could be installed with the
GTs of K-electric BQPS II. The project involves theoretical and computer aided design and
analysis. Furthermore, results are needed to be compared with the newly installed GT in SGST l.
The performance figures of scaled down model would be the scaled up to the GTs at BQPS II.
