Beyond the Border Project
type: urban design, school project, master degree
site: (French/Belgian Border) - Lille Metropole(Tourcoing - Mouscron)

Site Analysis
The main issue of the project is to create a missing local junction between two borderlines cities, inside a larger me-
tropolis, which extends from Lille to Brussels. This local junction connects the cities of Tourcoing and Mouscron and
needs to take account of two very different environments: Tourcoing is a former industrial area, currently seeking for
new perspectives of development. On the other side of the border, Mouscron is a typical residential Belgian town.
The connections are to be created since roads and public transport are well developed on both sides, but never cross
the border. This border is also clearly appearing in the urban morphology and turns the urban development into a dead
end.

Utopia
The aim of the workshop around this project is to implement the concept of utopia into an existing environment. This
goes through a redefinition of Utopia, engaging the notion of scale and purpose for buildings and urban planning. This
Utopia is illustrated through series of collages mixing the pictures of out-of-scale architecture and out-of-scale popula-
tion, thus involving a critical reflection about how to bring back life and sense to an area that lacks both of them.

Strategy
The architect and urban planner’s work in these conditions shows similarities with the work of a surgeon performing a
graft. Two heterogeneous entities must be connected in a general manner and treated through specific local interven-
tions.
This theoretical vision of urban connections is expressed in a comprehensive and flexible manner, opposed to a rigid and
dogmatic approach of urban planning, and allows Utopia to be part of the city again.
The chosen principles for this urban project are the following: mixing spatial functions and uses, creating a 24/24h oc-
cupation and implementing a shared spaces strategy.
The choices made in this project were to propose a generic, multipolar vision for the entire area, illustrated with exam-
ples of could be done buildings designed as “exercices de style”.
Concept 1 : Keeping the Use / Changing the Shape
This proposal involves a regular suburban commercial area. The existing functions were analysed and revisited as a
creation of an urban neighbourhood adding lacking elements: pedestrian circulations, requalification of the main road,
housing, densification of the plot, and cycling 24h/24 activities.

Concept 2 : Keeping the Shape / Changing the Use
This site is a former textile factory composed of two main buildings, which could be described as a large cube and a
huge area of sheds. The concept was to recombine the two structures into a coherent urban whole, mixing housings,
offices and public facilities.

ZONE A DENSIFIER

Global Approach
Despite its size Urbino is still an administrative centre for the region. The aim of the project is to turn the town into a
larger attracting point while keeping its historical identity. The two main issues are to create the proper conditions to
bring back the population to Urbino and to connect it to the coast with the proper infrastructures. 0 200 500 1000m

Local Approach
The town was divided into sectors attributed to the participants of the workshop. The present site is the “backdoor”
of the town as opposed to the main entrance characterized by the Ducal Palace, but is linked to the main coastal road
which gives a strategical importance.
The site is composed of three main elements : the city walls and the slope below them, the roads leading to the door
and some houses built next to the wall during the 1950s.

paysage. Assembly Principles
The constitutive elements need to be linked altogether but also considering the specific constraints of the site, such as
the valorisation of the surrounding landscape and the historical city.
Enrichissement // nouvel usage contemporain

Or aujourd’hui l’ex

PROCESS
Group 2 - New footway and bicycle bridge
The basic surface is a stripe connecting the two banks of the river with a light slope. Two additional stripes create the
lower and upper points, defining two different walks. The three stripes are then linked together and generate the
global shape of the bridge, in which every single point is interconnected to the whole structure through a specifically
designed algorithm.

URBAN
type: mixed use building, landscape, school project / site: Graz, Austria

Intro

OU
The site is a shopping centre in downtown Graz, located between the main square and the hill that acts as a landmark.
The aim of the project is to create an articulation between those two elements, and to implement a additional public
space on top of the building. This unique location allows the space to act as parallel urban square opening on both the
immediate urban environment and on the surrounding landscape.

Graz : SkyScraper
type: urban design, skyscraper, scholar project / site: Graz, Austria

Intro
The aim of the workshop was to create a conceptual vision of what could be a skyscraper clearly identifiable as repre-
sentative of the identity of Graz. The site analysis showed that a city cannot be reduced to some remote elements, but
rather is a synthesis of landscape, buildings and urban planning evolution. The project tends to bring together all these
elements into a symbolic whole.
Building Enveloppe
OMA : DAC
type: overall building enveloppe design, schematic design stage / site: Copenhagen, Denmark
architect : OMA (Ellen Van Loon, Chris Dujin, Dirk Peters )

Intro
The project for the future Danish Architecture Centre is intended as a major urban symbol, located next to the Main
Library and on the crossing of two channels. The program requires a multi-function space allowing the presents of dif-
ferent elements such as recreational areas, housing, museum, public spaces and urban infrastructures.

2. Concept
2.1 Geometry and main facade issues

The matrix for the envelope is based on a horizontal spacing of .800 mm, and a vertical spacing of approx. 5.000 mm.

Main Concept
The specific layout of the construction details, especially around the connections with the terraces and ceiling, allows a
visual impression of superposition of individual boxes. Corner and edge details will therefore be studied very carefully,
with the intention to bring in all directions the glass as close as possible to the edge.
The high thermal insulating property of the glass is adapted to the situation and destination of the enclosed space. In the
worst-case situation, an Ug value of 0.5 W/m²°C can be achieved with a triple and gas filled insulation glass. Combined
The chosen approach is define the different uses required in the building and to combine them as superposed boxes.
with a warm edge sealant and high insulating window profiles, an Ucw of 0.65 W/m²°C can be achieved. The approx.
.800 x 5.000 mm glass panels can actually be produced by different suppliers, THIELE (D), BGT (D), SPRIMOGLAS
These boxes are thought as the most adequate spaces for each function. The surrounding environment is emphasised
(B), and this list might increase in the future as such high requirements will become more and more common. New tech-
nologies, not yet available in those large dimensions, will also emerge soon, like heat-mirror films, integrated in double
by the use of natural light which creates multiple views and atmospheres inside the building. The work on the enve-
insulating glasses.
Most of the products and façade systems will neither be standard nor traditional. Nevertheless, the proposed products
lope is intended to underline the main concept and to provide a clear reading of these volumes.
and techniques are not experimental and do comply with European normative or reference documents. The façade will
deal without exception with the safety requirements according to the Danish standards.
Most of the operable parts are integrated in the façade without subdividing the matrix. To allow an easy and not wind
sensitive opening, sliding doors are being developed with possible motorisation. Firms like BLASI (D) have confirmed
the technical feasibility of this.
Natural ventilation: different design strategies have been developed for the ventilation vents. They all combine a flush
appearance, one or two motorised sashes that allow the pre-heating of the air when required, and include sound absorb-
ing surfaces.

3.3.2 Structural glazing - Thermal analysis (triple glazing pannel)

The thermal analyses gives an approach to the thermal performances of the enveloppe. The outline studies consist in
taking a current detail and make more precise and optimised drawings. Special software called bisco is used to evalu-
ate the heat losses of the frame and the part of the glazing. As the drawings on right page shows, the surfaces consid-

Outer Skin
The concept is the use of a square modular unit which allows a respiration of the facade. The glass surface can be ex-
panded to optimise natural lighting in the building and to open it on its surrounding environment. When needed the
sun protection is optimal as the modular unit narrows to reduce the amount of sunlight.

Inner Skin
The good protection from sunlight and heat of the outer skin and the geometry of the building itself, allows the use of
a fully glazed skin on the inner parts. The required protection at some moments of the day can be obtained through
the use of conventional elements, such as blinds and HVAC.

Vertical secondary structure + offset panels

DR

For this analyse option the criteria adopted are : panels without width deformation and more simple realisation of the
secondary supporting structure. The secondary structure is realised using strictly vertical cuts. This allow to have a single
curvature profiles and easier positioning. Most of the panels have length which is close to the 3000 mm required length.
However in the other cases the length is bigger but not the width.
