Hi there. Is your laptop an Acer?

Did you try the steps mentioned here? In rare cases, you have to leave the battery out for
a long time (an hour or so).
While the battery is out the power cord shouldnt be plugged into the computer, or this
may not work. If these tips dont
solve your problem after many tries, the problem could be your motherboard.

Acer Laptop Wont Turn On? Heres What To Do To Fix

It!

Posted on September 21, 2011by TekTime IT Consulting Blog - Do It Yourself Computer and Technology
Tips!

Countless people complain

about Acer laptops that wont turn on!

Do you have an Acer laptop that wont turn on at all, or at least from time to
time?

No matter how many times you push the power button, the laptop does not
power up

You can leave the computer and come back to it hours later, only to find that it
still wont start up. Perhaps you notice a blinking, amber-colored light every
time you press that infuriating power button. Have no fear, the answer
(hopefully) to your long-awaited solution is here

1.) Make sure your battery isnt completely dead. As inall the way dead, to
where it can never charge again. Assuming your battery still works, continue
on

2.) Remove your battery from your Acer laptop.

Yes, I know I just told you to make sure the battery works in number 1 but there
is a reason for this. I promise!

3.) Next, unplug the power adapter from the wall AND from the computer
.When your Acer laptop doesnt power up the problem could be worsened by
leaving it plugged in.

4.) Now that the battery and adapter have been

disconnected from the computer, you can move onto the solution. Hold down
the power button for 45 seconds. Next, Press the power button numerous
times for at least 45 more seconds (keep pressing the button during the entire
time period).

5.) Allow the laptop to sit for 20 minutes at least (sometimes it will power on
immediately after performing #4, but in worse cases this is encouraged)

6.) After the waiting period has ended, connect the battery and adapter to the
computer. Turn it on and all should be good.

Your Acer laptop should now turn on! Static buildup is a big problem in
various Acer computers, which causes the computers to not turn on. The
process highlighted above helps to discharge static electricity by eliminating the
remaining amount of electricity stored in the laptop (capacitors).

you so much for visiting this blog please tell a friend.

Happy Acer-ing!

Hi Ajoy,
Thanks for commenting! Try taking your laptop to a shop that can
check out your PC to make sure there are no issues such as
grounding problems, battery defects, motherboard problems, or
other issues that could cause those
problems. That will save you the most in time and frustration
avoided.
Feel free to come back for more help if needed!
Best of luck!

Hi Michael,
Sounds as if your motherboard has an issue. When your laptop
shuts down after three seconds,
do you hear any beeps or anything prior? Are you seeing anything
on your screen before it shuts off?

Hi Joanne,
What makes you believe that there is static in the battery? You can
test out your battery to see if it

has failed by taking it to a repair shop. They should be able to test

it for you for free.

Hi Elaine.
First, try restarting the computer and immediately pressing F8
after it boots up. You have to do this immediately
and press it several times. Do you get a menu afterwards that
includes Safe Mode?
If nothing comes up and you still get the cursor, the problem
could be one of many: virus, hard drive problem, a corrupt
Operating System, and more.

detailed info:)

Hi Chairity,

Here are some of the likeliest possibilities:

*Do you hear any beeping sounds by the way, or is
anything showing on the screen when it shuts off? *

1.) Overheatingwhen you turn it on do you hear a fan

spinning loudly, or not at all? If there is no fan spinning,
chances are something (usually the CPU) is overheating
and it wont allow powering up. It also could be
overheating if
the fans work properly, but the thermal paste on the CPU
is old, cracked, dissipating, etc.
You can generally feel the bottom of the laptop before it
shuts off to get an idea of how hot it is. You can also get a
laptop cooling pad for your lap to sit under it, but thats IF
there are actual heat issues.
2.) Bad charging portIf the charger port is bad, it will
shut off once the charge is interrupted, after the battery has
already died. Can you fully charge the battery? If so, does it
still shut off when the battery is connected but not the
power cord?
3.) Bad motherboardThe motherboard is usually to
blame when overheating, charger port, bad battery and
other hardware
issues arent at fault. This should be considered only after
ruling out everything else as culprits.
4.) Other hardwaresuch as the CPU, video card, etc
could be bad. But not usually before the motherboard or
other components fail.
Keep me posted on what happens!

as soon as I insert the battery with the AC connected still it will boot for
about 3 seconds and then shut down, If I insert the battery once its
running on AC and loaded to windows It shuts down immediately. Is this
a symptom of a bad battery or is it shorting somewhere do you think.

Hi Simon,
Sorry for the delay in getting to your comment. That problem
sounds like it could be a bad battery, or it could be a grounding or
shorting issue as
you suggested. The best way to know would probably be to have it
physically inspected if you dont have a spare battery and/or AC
adapter to swap
for troubleshooting purposes.

Hi Destiny,
It seems like your problem is not necessarily related to the issue
that this fix addresses. You could be having some hardware
damage or corruption
of your BIOS. It can also be overheating, bad memory, and other
possibilities. It would be best to physically have it inspected by a
reputable

shop or tech.

Hi Lestat,
The problem could be your battery, but it doesnt necessarily have
to be. Can you obtain another battery to try out and see if you
have the same issue? If you dont, you can take it in to a PC shop
for free testing (Geek Squad does it free if they are in your area).

Hi Ross,
Its possible that you could have hardware problems, or it could be
as simple as a corrupt BIOS.
When you enter setup after pressing F2, are you able to get into
the BIOS setup menu with no issues? If so, try choosing Reset to
defaults

or similar wording, to reset your BIOS to see if that helps. Sorry, I

dont have your computer in front of me so I cant see exactly what
your
BIOS reads. Feel free to post back for more assistance!

Hi Tara,
If you cant get the computer to power up regardless of how long
the battery/adapter is removed, you may want to get it checked
out for motherboard
damage. That is often the case. That isafter you have decided
that the power adapter and the battery is fully functional.

I have an Acer Aspire and having trouble powering up. When my

power supply cord stopped working on my (which still works fine

powering up the other two laptops in my home) I tried the power supply
cord for my husbands computer and it worked for about two weeks.
Then once again I my computer would no longer power up. On the
reconmendation of Greek Squard my husband purchased a new power
supply code and wont you know it, that one only worked for a week in a
half. Keep in mind that means Ive now tried three different cords, all of
which still work fine on other computers. Also neither of the three cords
work at all on my computer; Ive attempted each of them several times.

Hi Jill,
Your computer could have hardware damaged. Do you hear any
beeps at all, or any other activity (such as hard drives spinning,
lights coming on, etc)?

Hi,

Thanks for your advice!

When I plug in the adapter to my laptop and remove the battery from
it no lights will show up.
177.

Also the adapter has a strange noise when its plugged in.
178.

Could you please tell me why?

HI, I have a problrm with my Acer Aspire, it only work on battery.

When I plug in the power for a certain of time, the power button will

blink red and discharge the battery until 0%. When the power button
starts to blink, i have to unplug and plug the power cord but it only last
for awhile. The funny thing is when the laptop is on off mode and only
power cord input without battery, it still blinks red after a cetain period
of time. i bought another power supply with same voltage higher amp
also it is not helping. What cause the blink and how could i stop it?

AC and no battery my Acer Aspire 4720z boots fine but when I put

the battery in it dies after three seconds and the screen flashes bright to
dim a couple times before it shuts off. Got new battery and does the same
thing. Replaced the power board and does the same thing. Try to turn it
on with battery in and the amber light blinks 8 times.

Hi Jarvis,

200. I have a similar problem to those above. My Acer Aspire 5750 (about
3 months old) was working perfectly until this morning. I pressed the
button to turn it on and there was a very brief booting-up sound, then
nothing screen stayed black. When I waited I could here the sound of
the fan periodically, just for a few seconds, but there was no boot up (or
further boot up sound, nor beeps). I tried turning it off and on a few
times manually (just pressing and holding the main on/off button) and it
was the same thing.
201.

A while later my husband tried to turn it on and it started first time

(with the windows option of starting normally or safe mode). I started it

normally and thought it was just a blip. I shut it down properly and the
next time it started up fine, as normal. Thought that was the end of the
problem but tonight the same thing has happened. We have done the
step of taking out the battery and following the instructions above but
unfortunately it hasnt helped.
202.

We are going to leave the battery out over night just to be sure but

from what you have said above it sounds as if it is the motherboard. Is

that very bad news? Am I going to loose all my data? Is there anything

else I can try before following up the warranty? I do normally leave it

plugged in and charging most of the time, has that caused the problem?
203.

Its a bit shocking that so many people are having the same problem

with this computer, I thought when I bought it that it was a bit too cheap
to be true! Hope you can help. Excellent blog by the way.
204. Thanks, Annette

Hi Annette,
Sorry for the delay, Ive been on a bit of a hiaus. It sounds like
your problem is
hardware related, but it might not be the motherboard.
Is your PC still under warranty? If so, you can send it to be fixed
and you wont have to
lose any data at all. You could backup your data by cloning it, if
you have an external
USB drive that can hold the data. Then, if your drive is wiped out
during repair you can
easily restore your data to 100%.
Let us know if you need further assistance or if you want that link.

Thank you!

Having slightly different problem. Acer Aspire 5520-5912.

worked fine until this morning. Screen went white with
slanting lines. Powered it off, but when i powered it back
on it would not come in. I hear the whirring noise of
something turning, then it stops, and after a few seconds
repeats exaclty the same. Removed battery, followed your
suggestion to play with power button & wait but still doing
same thing. Seems it still recognizes the speakers because i
hear the noises through the speakers.
What do you suggest?

208. I have Acer extensa 4420, it was working perfect then one day I turn
it on and the screen is very, very dim. I thought it wouldnt turn on but
then while hitting some buttons it gave me a quick flash. I did manage to
get it in the right angle so I could go in and adjust settings to make sure
are bright as possible and all are turn all the way to highest brightness. I
let it set for about a week and then found this site and try it again Same
thing. Still able to get bright flash so I know the lights are there and
working. Have you ever heard of this before or any ideas on how to get
back to normal?

Hi, I have aspire 5755g that wont start up. When it is on charger and I

hit power button a cooler spins four times (each spining lasts about a sec,
with a sec of silence between spins). The last fourth spining is a bit
shorter. All lights are good (power, battery and hard disk), I can hear
hard drive spining too during that time but THE SCREEN ISNT showing
anything. Than my laptop just shuts down.
222.

When I unplug the charger and try to start it with battery only it goes
just one spining of cooler and it shuts down.

223.

Now it might be static electricity damaged because I use it on my bed

and my wool blanket is always under laptop.

You mentioned a buzzing sound. Could you describe the buzzing?
Have you tried resetting BIOS defaults in the BIOS? Your issue
could
indicate a bigger problem if the laptop does the same thing
without the battery being

Hi there,
Sounds like a hardware issue that will need repair. Could
be several things, including bad memory, bad CPU, bad
motherboard, overheating and others.
Try taking the battery out and then plugging it in to see
what happens. If that doesnt help, do the reverse and see
what happens.
If that doesnt help, you are most likely looking at a
hardware issue(s) that will need physical inspection.

Hi Jack,
Is your battery functioning properly? You should have it tested.
Many places will do that for free. If your battery works ok
Have you tried resetting CMOS or resetting your BIOS settings
to default? If that doesnt
work you could have a more complicated hardware issue that will
need physical inspection.
Let us know if that helps at all!

Hi there,
Could you explain a little more about what is going on with your
computer? It sounds like there could be a hardware issue going

It could be as simple as a lose wire, or it could be a bad inverter or
even screen..
if not anything else.
If the problem persists it may need a physical inspection.

the time in bios,

but after that my netbook wont turn on if i leave it shutdown for like
2 minutes, i have to take out battery and then re insert the battery and
then it will work fine, but it happens again and again, but if i keep the

i dont have issue with the battery inside windows, but it doent work
when computer is turned off, it wont charge and also dont start the

had this laptop for about 6-7 months. Last night when I went to turn on
my laptop the power button turned on and so did the light bulb light. The
third light from the left, which looks as of it has a set of stacked CDs
above it, flashed for less than a second then turned off. Normally I just
use the ac adapter so I put my battery in and still no dice. Then I tried
both the plug and battery and still got nothing. After playing with it for a
bit I got it to work but I cant remember the sequence I did. Then I shut it
down normally. Now today I went to turn it on and the same thing
happened. The screen was completely black. There was no power in it at
all. The power button lit up. The light bulb light lit

have commented but they never really got specific. I have an Acer Aspire
5750 series model number: P5WE0 (thats a zero at the end). I have only
had this laptop for about 6-7 months.

The light bulb light lit up also. The third
light from the left flashed. I heard the fan turn on and heard the cd drive
spin and saw its light turn on. The. It all went quiet for a second and then
the fan turns back on. Do you have any idea what the cause may be? I
tried duplicating your steps multiple times eventually reaching a one
hour break. Thank you for your time.

My sons Acer, just purchased at Christmas was working fine then a

few minutes later it shut down, he pushes the power button, the blue
lights comes on, you see the blue ACER screen and f2 prompt then boom
shuts itself off again.. Was purchased at Micro Center.. hes taken battery
out, put it back in, even does this when connected to the charger.
Needless to say hes a tad mad and Im not sure what to do, to me it
seems like a bad M.Board or HD..

overheating) and wont turn back on..

416.

i have tried pressing the power button and all steps youve given but it
still wont turn on..
417.

i have also cleaned all the dust from the fan, checked the
motherboard, but nothing seems burn or weird..

418.

and also, if i put the battery into it and plug the adapter in, the

charging indicator lamp is still working, but still after pressing the power
button, i will get butt-hurt..

Hello,

Since yesterday I have more or less the same issue as everybody else.

444.

When I press the power button of my Acer Aspire 4535 the power
light turns on and I hear the drivers (but just for a ltitle while). the
screen stays completely black (as when it is turned off).

445.

a friend of mine recommanded me to take our the battery and try

again, but it didnt change a thing when turning on. Instead of forcing the
laptop to turn off I left it on and suddenly (after about 1 hour) my screen
turned on! And I was able to work my laptop normally.
446.

Than yesterday I turned off my computer normally (still no battery in

it) and this morning the exact same thing happaned. Turned it on, no
screen activity, but after about one hour it turned on.
447.

Any idea what this might be??

448.

PS. Working without the cable has never been an option, always had

problems with the battery. Not sure if this is causing the new problem

Im having a similar issue where when I press the power button all of

the lights turn on for about 1 second and then they all shut off. I hear no
beeps from the motherboard and I never saw the blue screen of death
when I was using it last night. I was surfing the web using just the
battery supply (no A/C adapter plugged in) and the computer just turned
off suddenly with no error messages or warnings. I have a model
5820T-6401 and it has been a great machine until yesterday. I tried your
power button pressing solution to relieve any internal static but to no
avail. Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! I tried the other 10 or so variations of this floating around

the web to no avail and yours finally worked!

505.

It was either pressing the power button multiple times after holding

that did the trick or because the other times I only unplugged the charger
from the laptop but not the wall. Also, in my previous attempts I didnt
wait very long before trying to start the computer again.
506.

I should also note that the previous tries I was doing it with the

laptop sitting on the carpet and since this seems to be a static problem, it
may have helped that I moved it onto a wood table.

The problem sounds like hardware issues not necessarily

lhordy, try replacing your power adapter first, or swapping with a

new or known working unit to rule it

out as the culprit. If that doesnt help, see if you can have your
battery tested, although the laptop
should still power up if the battery is bad but not always. I hope
that helps.

Hi Lisa,
Do you know if the computer was dropped; left exposed to heat
for a long period of time, or if liquids were spilled on it (or
exposed to moisture)?
If none of the above, you may want to take it to a local shop (or a
Best Buy if in your area). They will need to test your power supply
and battery
to ensure they are operating correctly. That is usually always

FREE.

That would probably be the best bet because of the inactivity (no
lights, fans, sounds etc). If they find the problem isnt either of
those, you can
send the laptop in for the warranty repair. I know, its very
inconvenient but with sometimes surprisingly quick turnaround.
I hope that helps!!

Thanks for your reply. I kept searching after I posted this

message and came across this
http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-95127-acer-aspire-onezg5-won-t-boot-up I followed the instructions, dowloading
the correct BIOS update for our model and it worked! As it
says in the instructions, it didnt work the first time, but for
whatever reason, the second time I did it, it just magically
switched back on. I dont know how it works with the
battery out and the adaptor not plugged in, but it did. This
was last night and the laptop turned on as normal this
morning, so far it looks like it has (for now) fixed the
problem. Just thought you might like this follow up as my
searching online has shown me that many people seem to
have this problem with their Acer laptops.

Hi Holly,
Have you tried testing a different power adapter to see if the
problem remains? If the issue isnt charger or battery related it will
most likely be a bigger hardware issue. Try powering up without
the battery plugged in, then without the adapter to see if the same
thing happens.
Do you notice any beeps, other sounds/lights before it shuts off?

Hi Carolyn,
Sounds like it could be a myriad of things causing your issue.
It could be faulty hardware, an electric short, overheating, and
even a BIOS issue.
Does the problem occur with the battery connected without the
power adapter, and vice-versa? Lets try to narrow down the
problem as not being battery or power-related, and go from there.

Hi there Final Fantasy God..

Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor using a VGA

cable. It will plug into the blue port on the side or back of your
laptop.
If the external monitor works properly, you either need to have
your computer screen replaced or your inverter. The inverter is
often the issue and you can narrow it down quite easily:

*When you turn on your computer, shine a flashlight

onto the screen. Do you notice a very faint image or text? If so,
the problem is usually the backlight inside of the screen, the lights
up the screen so you can see it. If you see nothing at all when
doing this, the screen is bad, or the inverter could be bad.
Try to narrow down the video card having an issue by hooking up
the laptop to an external monitor, and posting your results.

Hi Kates!
Sounds like there is some kind of hardware fault more than a
static buildup.
It could be possible that your fan is dead and it needs to be
replaced. If it doesnt work properly, the CPU (processor)

will overheat within a matter of seconds, so it would shut down

immediately to prevent the chance of overheating.
Its kind of hard to troubleshoot your particular problem, but you
may first want to eliminate the possibility of
the problem being caused by something simple. If you are
comfortable opening the laptop, do that and remove the small,
round battery for about 30 minutes. This is the CMOS battery.
You could also go into BIOS setup after boot-up and
find the setting to Reset to default, BIOS defaults or similar
wording. That may work but I find pulling the battery
to be more effective.
Hopefully that works but theres a chance that it wont. If not, feel

free to post back for more help!

that worked for me too! but it kept happening and I figured out the

another possible issue.. when it was plugged in it was not charging, so i

changed the cord and it has not happened since .. i would suggest
everyone check to see if their laptops are charging when plugged in.
that battery gets so low it can t turn on..

sometimes if i remove battery and power supply, maybe without

battery and just

for a few seconds..
607.

it has a few moments with like 2-3 seconds of life signs, the fan and

harddrive is spinning led panel with wifi etc. also lights up and responds,
up but then goes dead again..
608. any idea.? the last time it was in use it was no internal drive
connected but a disk connected
609. with usb and although the battery was almost empty it stayed on for
very long time with 1-2 % battery left.. dont know of this is of importance
but just tought i mention it..

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your comment.
It sounds as if you have some deeper underlying hardware
problems. At first thought I would assume its the motherboard.

Do you have a local repair shop such as a Best Buy-Geek Squad

nearby? Im asking because they test power supplies and
batteries for free, and they can also give you a quick assessment
on what the problem could be (after testing).
One possibility is there could be some kind of power shorting or
grounding issue causing it to turn on and then off again;
this type of problem can be fixed but it is usually hard to pinpoint,
thus repair. So the motherboard oftentimes need
replacing in those cases.
Once you rule out any bigger hardware issues, troubleshooting the

power components is much easier and stress free.

Best of luck!

Hi Anna,
I can understand your frustration! When it began to load, did it
show the black screen/cursor BEFORE the Windows logo? As
inas SOON as you turned it on?
If so, there is some kind of motherboard issue going on, such as a
CMOS that needs resetting, or even bad memorya few other
problems. Do you hear any
beeps at all?
Also, do you recall the last thing you did on the computer before
this started happening? Was it dropped, shutdown without
closing down in Windows properly,
virus infection, etc?

When i turn on my acer aspire 4736G it either switches off after a few

seconds or shows me a screen that says windows failed to start.A recent

hardware or software change might be the cause. If windows files has
been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose
and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose Start
Windows Normally
630. And gives me two options:Launch startup repair and start windows
normally.

However when I tried both they still shutdown after awhile, how to I

So you are saying your motherboard has voltage going through
some circuits but nothing is

happening when you press the power button? Your problem is not
related to this post, so that advice

Have you checked the DC jack to make sure it or the connection to

Looking for helpful information about what I might be able to to do

for my Acer Aspire 7736Z-4088 laptop. I just started having this problem
today. I was on the computer and it for no reason just completely shut
off. I restarted the computer and about 10 minutes later it completely
shut off again. Only now it will not turn back on. I have tried the
suggestions on some other sites. I bought a new power cord thinking that
may be the issuebut it doesnt seem to be. I have tried to remove the
static as has been suggested: by taking the battery out and unplugging
the power cord and holding the power button down for 60 seconds, then
trying to turn it on again.and still nothing. I dont know what else to
try..any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Jaya, the problem just might be the power button itself. In

most cases the button isnt the problem, but its best to rule it out
first.
If you continue to press the power button many, many times, does
it EVER turn on at all? If notyes, you might have a problem with
the computer

itself. One thing I would assume off-the-top is your DC jack needs

replacing. Have it checked out to make sure you are getting power
to your PC.
You could borrow an AC adapter that you know works properly,
and see if you get power. If not, its either your jack or other
hardware.

Hi Brian,
When you say you removed the case, what exactly do you mean
by the case?
Usually when you have a charge light but no power-up/booting,
theres some hardware issues going on. Take your battery out and
try to see if it powers up

when connected only to the adapter. Then, if no luck, put the

battery back in and power up with-OUT the power adapter. If no
luck, try the steps outlined
in the post you read, but wait at least an hour after removing the
battery/unplugging power, to reconnect everything and start it
back up.
Hope that helps!

Hi Naga,
Sounds like your computer isnt getting any powereither into it
from the power supply, or no power coming from the batteryor
both.

Have you tried to check and see if adapter has gone bad? You can
take your computer to a shop and they will test it for FREE (or
they should,
at leastif not go somewhere else!)
Check your hardware in this order:
1.) Your adapter (by taking it to a shop, or plugging a known
GOOD adapter in to test). If it is good, move to #2
2.) Your jack if the adapter is good, pull your battery and plug in
your laptop without it. If it doesnt power up, its your DC jack. It
may need replacing. If your PC does power upcheck your
battery
3.) Your battery if the adapter is good, and the jack is good too,
add your battery back and plug it in. If it doesnt power up. Its
your
battery.

Hope that helps!

Hi Anthony,
If you are still having this problem, try taking the computer to a
shop or store to have them connect a known working power
adapter to it.
If it powers up, replace your adapter. If not, chances are the DC
jack is bad and needs to be replaced, or the motherboard is bad.
I would assume its the DC jack IF it doesnt power up with a good
adapter, before I would assume its the motherboard.

Anthony says:

Many Thanks for your reply,

Unfortunately I think it is the motherboard as I have tried a
functioning power supply and a fully charged battery but to
no avail. It still wont power up. I have spoken to Acer as
the laptop is barely 18 months old, must say that even
though it is out of warranty I thought they might assist
with the cost of the repairs but, no joy. I doubt I will ever
buy an Acer product again if this is the longevity I can
expect from their products.

Hi Shedrack,
There could be numerous problems making your laptop behave
that way. Have you power adapter and your battery checked at a
shop if you can,
as they usually do it for free. Either your laptop battery isnt
getting a full charge, or your adapter is not working to charge it up

Hi Ruben,
Since you mentioned a clock, chances are your CMOS battery
could be very low. CMOS batteries hold the ROMs info, thus
allowing your computer to bootup and remember its settings,
which include the time and date. If you can open up your laptop
by removing several screws, you could replace/check the battery
yourself.

You could also take it to a tech or a shop and have them replace
the battery for you. Thats if a battery is your problem.
Start there and then post back if you need more help!

Hi Sarfo,
Have you tried removing your battery and then plugging your
adapter into the computerthen powering it on?
If that doesnt help, make sure your battery is fully charged; it
could be going bad. Take it to a shop or Best Buy near
you if you can, and have them test out your battery and your
adapter to make sure both work.
That could be causing your problem. If not, you have some kind of
hardware problem that will need repair. Good luck!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for commenting! There could be several issues causing

your problem, but I will name the most likely things you can
check:
1.) Problem with Windows. To verify this, press F8 many, many
times after starting your PC. Are you taken to the Safe Mode..
menu after
doing that? Or are you still getting the blank screen and cursor? If
so, move on to #2
2.) Beep codes. Do you hear any beeping at all when you get the
screen? If Windows isnt loading at all, chances are it could be
corrupt or
something could be wrong with your hard drive. Can you go into
your BIOS Setup Menu and check to see if your hard drive is
being detected?
IF not, that could be the problem. You can refer to your user
manual or the Internet for info on checking that.
3.) Hardware problem. If your drives are being detected, but you
still have the same issue, chances are you have to Update your
BIOS. You can
refer to Acers website on how to do this. Their
Support/Downloads section usually has info to assist you.
Last but not least, if none of that helps, you could have hardware
damage, such as the motherboard. But troubleshoot these tips
first and let us

know if you need further assistance!

Hi Ed,
Thanks for commenting. First thought is that your power cord
isnt supplying enough power to the battery/computer.

Thats why its not fully charging, and why it wont work when the
battery is detached from the laptop.
Another possibility, is your battery is needed in order for your
computer to power up with the power cord attached. Have you
ever tried to use your computer without the battery before, and
did it work? If not, that could be the problem also.

If you can, swap your adapter with a known-to-work-100% power
adapter. Attach it to your PC, with the battery plugged in. Allow
it to charge for a couple of hours and try again. If it still doesnt fix
the problem, remove the battery and see if it powers up without
the battery.
If it doesnt, you may have a problem with your motherboard,
which could include the DC power jack itself. A faulty connection
from the DC power jack to the motherboard can result in a loss of
power getting to the battery and the computer.

Try the adapter swap and post back for more help.

Ive got a startup issue with my Aspire 5551, the fan starts but then

nothing else happen. It remains black and unfriendly. Ive tried the trick
in the first post twice with different resting time, once for 20 minutes
and once with about an hour. Ill try it once more shortly, leaving it be
over the night.
773.

I get no beeping sound what so ever, just the fan reving up and then
settling a normal pace. The battery-lamp is shining as is the lamp

indicating that Im hooked up to the grid but I never get any light on the
harddrive-lamp.
774.

This happend earlier today but at that time, I simply unplugged the

battery and let it rest for 15 minutes and it started with no problem. No
such luck this time.
775.

Is it the harddrive which is making this a sad moment or is there

hope for this laptop?

I got it running, it took another two attempts though, and what

mightve done the trick was to discharge the battery before fully
recharging it. (I simply hooked up the cooling pad and let it die.)

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, you are right.
Discharging the battery fully ensures no static (electricity)
can get to the laptop during its
problem phase. Good job!

Hi Peter,
Its difficult to tell exactly whats causing your problem, but it
could be the hard drive. Usually when the hard drive
is on its way out, you will notice the black screen and cursor, and
Windows failing to load. Youll also notice issues
in Windows such as blue screens, programs not operating
properly, files missing and/or not saving properly, I/O error
messages and more.

Get into Windows if you can, and go to Computer/My

Computer.
Right-click it and choose Properties.
Next, choose the Tools tab.
Click Check Now under Error Checking.

Allow it to test your drive for errors.
Did it find any?
