Unreal conditions are conditions or situations that are not actually fact.
These conditions do not exist, and therefore the conclusion in a
sentence with an unreal condition cannot be realized. To express
unreal conditions, the subjunctive forms of haben, sein, and werden
are used. These sentences refer to the present or to the immediate
future.
Wenn wir Geld htten, wrden wir nach Peking fliegen.
If we had money (but we dont), we would fly to Peking.
When a sentence contains an unreal condition referring to the past, the
subjunctive form of haben or sein plus a past participle are used in
both the condition and the conclusion.
Wenn ich Geld gehabt htte, wre ich nach Peking geflogen.
If I had had money (but I didnt), I would have flown to
Peking.

Modals in Past Conditional Sentences
To express the conversational past in sentences with a modal and
another infinitive, the double infinitive is used. It is always formed with
haben.
Die Athleten haben sich nicht ausruhen wollen.
In past conditional sentences containing a modal, the double infinitive
is used with the subjunctive form of haben.
Wenn wir mehr Zeit gehabt htten, htten wir das Fuballspiel zu Ende
sehen knnen.
The conclusion in a past conditional sentence can be used alone. It
may express criticism or mild reproach.
Ihr httet aber warten sollen.
E. For the pair of sentences, write a past conditional sentence.
Follow the example.
Wir hatten kein Internet. Wir konnten die Ergebnisse schneller
erfahren.
Wenn wir Internet gehabt htten, htten wir die Ergebnisse
schneller erfahren knnen.
