below:

Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency(s) that the artifact represents.

The artifact that I am offering as evidence in this standard is a paper entitled Management
Systems Paper. This paper was a requirement of GEDU:543, Administration of Comprehensive
Guidance programs. This paper illustrates a great understanding of the management system that a
counselor strives to put in place aligning with the ASCA National Model.
What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies
which fall under this standard?
Standard 8 is power packed. It has 11 competencies that make up counselor skills, all of which
are equally important. There is an ongoing theme throughout of collaboration, communication,
planning, and implementation. While interviewing the counselor at my practicum it was evident
though he fared well at implementation, collaboration, and communication the planning piece of
the management system was weak to say the least. I like to believe that I am a great planner. I
work best when structure is in place. The planning piece of being a Professional School
Counselor presents as an area of growth for me. I feel strongly that collaboration,
communication, and implementation are much more effective when purposefully planned.
What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your strength as a professional school counselor?
There are many factors that potentially affect a counselor's ability to to plan. I understand that,
however how effective can the guidance program really be without planning. The counselor I
worked with stated that he did not really ever complete time analysis, or sit down with his
principal to complete goals for the year. I think that in order for me to progress toward my goals I
will have to start my career planning and managing my time. If not I feel it will be incredibly
hard to stay on target, be purposeful in planning interventions, and or being effective in general.
What are your plans for additional growth in this area?
I will not fall into the trap of not planning from the first day I become a counselor. I will invest in
a very good planner that links to my computer. I align counseling program with the ASCA
national model. Doing so well aid me in setting goals, as well as timelines. I will make sure that
my time is allocated wisely. Lastly, I will work hard to make sure that my desk is cleared daily
of that days tasks, in an effort to start everyday with a fresh desk and a clear mind.
