Hypothesis

The hypothesis is that in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, suppression of
immune system with conditioning therapy favours the proliferation of infections. Also there is an
increased incidence of reoccurrence or reactivation in patients with current or past history of an
infection.
In addition, the consequence of not suppressing the immune system before transplant should also
be considered bearing in mind the fatal consequences of graft rejection.
To prevent, treat and obtain a better outcome from allogeneic transplants, I suggest that the event
time scale of the different infections be properly understood to increase and improve chances of
survival and quality of life respectively. This I believe will aid physicians in tailoring and
administering prophylactic treatment to the recipients as at when due.
