Patrick has played tennis since he was four. He trains every day for two hours from five to seven in
the morning. On the weekend he often has to wake up even earlier to travel to state tournaments
where he plays the best players in his age group.
Patricks family is not rich, and training and equipment are expensive, so he has to work in the
evenings to help cover his costs. He works in a general store after school from five until six thirty.
Patrick wants to get a tennis scholarship and play for one of the leading colleges in the country.
Once he has graduated, he plans to become a professional player, but he knows that it may not be
possible, so he wants to study hard, too.
This summer Patrick and his friend Jason are running a tennis camp for young kids. They are
inviting children from their neighborhood to come and learn about physical fitness as well as how to
play the game. Who knows? says Patrick. We may discover a future world champion!
