PAPILLOMAVIRIDAE

Warts
There are many strains of papilloma viruses
They have a tropism for squamous epithelial cells,
and different strains like certain anatomic
regions: common warts, genital warts, laryngeal
warts
Warts are benign hyperproliferations of the
keratinized squamous epithelium
Most will resolve spontaneously within 1-2 years

For unclear reasons many people do not

develop warts despite the ubiquitous nature
of the papilloma virus
Perhaps in these unaffected individuals the
virus remains latent or is effectively controlled
by the host immune system.

Cervical Cancer
Cervical dysplasia and carcinoma are associated
with sexual activity and previous exposure to
certain strains (type 16 and 18) of human
papilloma virus
Think of PAPilloma virus and the PAP smear,
which is used to detect early dysplastic cellular
changes
The Pap test has resulted in early detection of
cervical dysplastic changes and has significantly
reduced the progression to cervical cancer
